When I was a kid it was common to use the term "n***er brown" to describe a dark brown colour and would be openly used in shoe shops etc. No one gave it any racist connotations, it was just a colour. 'Course, in these more enlightened days, it's a different matter!

Another word not used these days, but one which was prevalant in my childhood and the literature we were exposed to, was "*****rdly", meaning un-cooperative, unwilling etc. Easy to see the source of the meaning, but again it was used freely with no connotations.
