View Full Version : Mylon Watkins Vs. Rod Douglas
JUYJUY 09-27-2005, 02:08 PM It's the man who beat Eubank against the man who beat Benn.
This is a crazy post.
Mylon Watkins beat Eubank in the semi-final of the 1984 Champion of Champions Golden Gloves and Watkins beat Eubank in the quarter-final of the 1985 Champion of Champions Golden Gloves.
Rod Douglas beat Benn in the final of the 1985 ABA West Ham divs final en route to winning the ABA nationals and Benn beat Douglas in the final of the 1986 ABA West Ham divs final en route to winning the ABA nationals.
Watkins or Douglas, who wins?

This is one ****ing gay message.
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-27-2005, 02:52 PM JUYJUY, I don't think Eubank went to the NATIONAL Golden Gloves.
JUYJUY 09-27-2005, 03:11 PM JUYJUY, I don't think Eubank went to the NATIONAL Golden Gloves.
He won a Gold medal at the Empire State Games and then went to the Champion of Champions tournament in St Louis (National Golden Gloves??), losing to Mylon Watkins.
theclawoftheTiger 09-27-2005, 03:42 PM According to Eubanks bio he had no amateur fights at all in 1985. He moved to the US in 1982 to finish his schooling and soon took up boxing for selfdefence because he was too outspoken and getting beaten up. He was raw at first and lost his first five amateur fights in 1982 but he came back two years later after two years of hard work and was much better skilled, in 1984 he reached the semifinals of the US golden gloves and won the 'spanish' golden gloves, he finished with an amateur record of 19 wins and seven defeats .. he had a handful of pro fights around the casinos of Atlantic city only when he was in desperate need of cash and working in his corner were Eddie Futch pupils Patrick Ford and Maximo Pierret .. Eubank always continued training though because he loved nothing more than developing his craft and was a gym fighter more than anything until returning to the UK in 1988 with amazing skills still developing ..
theclawoftheTiger 09-27-2005, 03:53 PM Eubanks one weakness in the pros was stamina .. but I honestly believe that Eubank would of been unbeatable over four two-minute rounds after the skills he developed between 84 and 90 .. that man was all skill no stamina ..
theclawoftheTiger 09-27-2005, 04:02 PM Oh and I havent got a clue who Mylon Watkins is so I cant say .. but Rod Douglas was a hot prospect who was robbed at the 84 Olympics but won the ABA nationals in 83, 84, 85 and 87 (Benn won ABA nationals 86) and Douglas won Commonwealth Gold in 86, exciting pro fights until bumping into Herol Graham who countered him alnight .. Douglas only had two defeats in the amateurs that I know of and they were to Iran Barkley at the 82 world championships, and Benn.
Douglas also holds a few memorable ABA divs final wins in 83 and 84 over former junior prodigy Michael Watson ..
JUYJUY 09-28-2005, 04:35 AM I honestly believe that Eubank would of been unbeatable over four two-minute rounds after the skills he developed between 84 and 90
Totally agree with that, it seemed Eubank almost always looked outrageously good for the first few mins of the first few rounds before fading out.

Orange Sneakers 09-28-2005, 08:26 AM His name was Chris Eubanks back then not Eubank,he didn't delete the 's' from his surname until he was 22 years old.
The Spanish Golden Glove Championship was an open tournament organised by Jose Torres and Jake LaMotta in 1984,that's the only year it was held, all the top amateurs in the country were invited.
Eubank modelled himself (physically) on a gym fighter called Dennis Cruz, who according to Eubank was a good mover and perfectionist.
The other fighters Eubank admired were Thomas Hearns and Pernell Whitaker. Theres a photo of Eubank weighing 139 lbs. and he looked like an ephiopian with fuzzy hair,he looked like Hearns abit so maybe thats why he admired him. He's said that at one time one his goals was to become WBC light-middleweight champion only because a WBC belt would of looked good around his waist, although he didn't care at all for going into the history books he wasn't into that he just wanted money from pro boxing and was an attention seeker but was mostly into the poetic art of boxing.
Orange Sneakers 09-28-2005, 08:49 AM ClawofTiger,
Maximo Pierret wasn't an Eddie Futch pupil at all,all Maximo Pierret was is the guy who got Eubank started in boxing. Pierret worked at the Jerome gym as an assistant thats all. Eubank wanted to learn how to defend himself because like you say he was very outspoken and stood up for himself but couldn't afford the joining cost of the Jerome gym so he worked as a cleaner there until Pierret persuaded them to let him join in. Pierret had also been giving Eubank boxing sessions in private because he felt sorry for him before they let Eubank join in at Jerome.
When Eubank turned pro he let Pierret work in his corner along with Eddie Futch pupil Patrick Ford as a mark of loyalty to Pierret I guess,he hadn't seen him for over two years but invited him to work in his corner for his first five pro fights because he was grateful that Pierret got him started. But Patrick Ford was Eubank's only trainer when he won the Spanish Golden Glove Championship and started his pro career in America.
Eubank didn't see Pierret for over six years after returning to the UK,that was before inviting Pierret to work in his corner again for the Benn rematch then keeping Pierret in his corner for the rest of his career out of gratitude because it was Pierret who had got him started.
Eubank's trainer in the UK in 1988 and 1989 was Freddy King, then Brendan Ingle was going to become Eubank's trainer but Eubank refused to learn switch-hitting and didn't like doing body sparring so Ingle hooked up Eubank with a friend of his called Ronnie Davies in 1990. Ronnie Davies was Eubank's main trainer from 1990 to 1995 so he was Eubank's main trainer throughout the main part of his boxing life. Eubank sacked Davies after the first loss to Collins for no apparent reason. Dennis Andries and Pierret worked in Eubank's corner for the rest of his fights of his career after Davies was sacked, although Eubank had no trainer at all then and just trained himself.
JUYJUY 09-28-2005, 09:36 AM Holy ****ing ****!
Great info dude, I'll use that **** thanks.
Eubank had a good friend who was into martial arts and he claims to have developed some of his style like his weight distribution from martial arts.

TheEvilSaint 09-28-2005, 03:19 PM Totally agree with that, there's NOBODY who would beat a peak Eubank over a few short rounds. Not Leonard or Hagler, not Jones Jr or McClellan, not even Sugar Ray Robinson.
... your a ****ing imbecile.
JUYJUY 09-28-2005, 08:05 PM Interesting stuff, Johnson and Milton had already fought that year - http://www.boxing-records.com/palm/voirpalmaf.phtml?boxeur=johnsore.html
TheEvilSaint 09-28-2005, 11:00 PM Eubank was a bum, pathetic poser with no heart.
amen to that, brother.

What I achieved as an amateur boxer was the Spanish Golden Gloves title.
Chris
Same as the Golden Gloves, but Spanish.
Yes it's true that I reached the semi-finals of the US National Golden Gloves in 1984.I don't remember the name of the guy who beat me
Don't remember any of the names of the guys who beat me, sorry
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-29-2005, 08:22 AM thats very weird. i have a lot of amateur ranking books from back then and barkley isnt rated in the top 10 and at that time, as now, to make the world championships you have to be the best guy in the united states and barkley was never that. i have no idea how he could have even qualified but i am going to investigate. i am going to hear back from reggie johnson on the other thing. we'll see. as for mylon watkins, so you know, mylon was a top of the line u.s. amateur. he got stopped by mark brelandin the 1984 olympic trials but then went on and won the national golden gloves afterwards severaltimes. he may have went to olympicsin 88 but in 86 he got indefinitely suspended from usa boxing due to a violation that happened on an international trip he was on
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-29-2005, 12:38 PM WELL.....I just talked to Reggie Johnson himself and he toldme not only did he never fight Eubank at the OHIO STATE FAIR but that he himself never evenfought at the Fair, period. So i dont know where yuo guys are getting some of this amateur info but itis wrong. i just asked Breland if Barkely fought with him at the world championships and he said he didnt remember Barkely even being there let alone winning a medal. I am still going to check further on that one, though.

ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-29-2005, 02:31 PM That site you got them from is WRONG..and let me tell you...I won the OHIO FAIR in 1987...you dont get AN INVITE to fight someone there. I also have the results section in magazine that cameout that month with a full story on 17 year old tyson and it has the results in it...Johnson and Eubanks are not there. Besides... Reggie himself told me he did NOT fight at the Fair
YOUR INFO is wrong..Iran Barkley never went to the world championships as an amateur boxer. Iran was not an elite world class amateur.
Yes this is true but Iran was undoubtedly one of the premier burglars (both professional and amatuer) of his time...He was the best!
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-30-2005, 01:46 PM I Just Talked To Breland And He Doesn't Remember Barkley Being There At The 1982 Worlds. He Is Pretty Sure It Was Virgil Hill At 165.
