View Full Version : King: "Mayorga will be back in 2005"
kborges 12-20-2004, 09:54 AM Promoter extraordinaire Don King says former WBC and WBA welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga will indeed be back in action in the New Year despite the fact the Nicaraguan wildman announced his retirement in the immediate aftermath of his eighth round knockout to Felix 'Tito' Trinidad in New York in October (pictured by Neil Abramson).
"Mayorga will be back, baby," King told SecondsOut. "He'll be back in 2005 bigger and better than ever before, coming off that magnificent performance against Tito Trinidad in October. He'll be back and he'll return as a superstar like never before thanks to his brave effort against Trinidad."
King intimated that Mayorga's 'retirement' owed more to the crushing disappointment of losing to bitter rival Tito coupled with the worry of that impending rape trial in his native land. In the late summer, 'El Matador' was accused of sexually assaulting a women in a hotel in Nicaragua but was found not guilty at the subsequent trial two weeks ago.
"That whole legal thing has vindicated Mayorga and he's now ready to return," enthused King.
"If ever a man proved himself a gallant, never-say-day warrior in a fight he lost it is Ricardo Mayorga at Madison Square Garden, October 2, 2004. He took a heck of a beating from Tito but just kept on giving until he had nothing left to give - and then he gave some more! The fans cannot help but respect that kind of commitment to the fight and bravery of spirit and they cannot wait to see what this warrior will do next."
Although he has no concrete plans, King said he believes Mayorga will return at junior middleweight, having looked too small v Trinidad at full-blown junior middleweight.
"There's no reason he can't win more titles, baby!" King said.
dansweeney 12-20-2004, 09:56 AM ill always watch mayorga, he is very exciting
Truth 12-20-2004, 10:26 AM I don't think Mayorga is done by any means he just should fight at 147 instead of 160.
FightFan214 12-20-2004, 10:44 AM I don't think Mayorga is done by any means he just should fight at 147 instead of 160.
Yea, he needs to come back but at welter or superwelter. I cant wait to see him fight again!!
Marjoh 12-20-2004, 03:47 PM I agree, he should move back down like DLH. I still think he did better than DLH in the middleweight, though. BTW, Mayorga have already announced he's coming back after he announced his retirement. I guess that site missed it.
amaru 12-20-2004, 04:21 PM id luv to see him back, he is a character, i cant remember what fight it was, but he was eatin pizza and smokin a cigar when he was being weighed for a fight. when i saw that i was just laughing.
Hurlex 12-20-2004, 04:25 PM hell yeah...good times...mayroga and gatti are the most exciting fighters out there today
i would love to see mayorga vs:
margarito (war would break out)
santos (mayorga owns him)
vargas (to send vargas right back into retirement)
winky (i think mayorga would have a shot)
borikua 12-20-2004, 04:26 PM just stay away from Tito.... ;)
Hurlex 12-20-2004, 04:27 PM even though very unlikely (well not really if mayorga catches him) i would love to see mayorga ko winky for pulling out of a tito fight for 3mil dollars...b*t*h a$$ winky lol
Hurlex 12-20-2004, 04:29 PM yeah lol..no rematch for mayorga..tito is just to good at MW and hits har as f**K...but tito is acting like a b*tch waiting for hopkins to get old before fighting him...and u know its true...but we'll see... i think hopkins would beat tito in a rematch...MW is just no for mayorga
i mean lamotta (he was 5'8) carried his short height and weight well but mayorga cant seem to...
i think mayorga power and stamine (which he has always had) will be great at 154
borikua 12-20-2004, 04:33 PM tito is acting like a b*tch waiting for hopkins to get old before fighting him...and u know its true...but we'll see... i think hopkins would beat tito in a rematch
The Trinidad's wanted a rematch after the fight, but Nard didn't...Plus now DLH won't make this rematch possible...
Hurlex 12-20-2004, 04:38 PM he will for the money...second...now nard is the ne saying if tito wants to get ko'ed he down..i am not agrueing i am jsut going on facts alright dude...then
we have titos dad alking about tito going to 168 to fight mayeb to fights (lacy and calz-cuz of money) then coming back down to fight hopkins..i see this as tito waiting for hop to get old
but maybe i am wrong who knows...but tito is not making himself look good now..for someone that wants to "fight hopkins as soon as possible" as he has said
borikua 12-20-2004, 04:44 PM Well, Tito wanted the rematch right after his loss and Nard didn't...Does that makes Nard a "*****" right then?...Plus the legal problems btw Don and Nard might be the real reason...I say might be, cuz at the end we don't realy now...
Hurlex 12-20-2004, 04:50 PM true...after seeing lacy vs shika...i think tito may have a shot at lacy..and that would be a big accomplishment plus money...but it is risky..but its looks like for what there going
anyway..lacy vs tito...now thats cool
reebox8225 12-20-2004, 05:52 PM Mayorga may not have nothing left after the beating he took.

Hurlex 12-20-2004, 10:50 PM oh dude i can clearfiy that..yeah he did say it but he was just messing around and u now how he is...what he's looking for (this is from nicaragua press) is a fight with vargas when he comes back because mayorga dont like him for some reason...and also margarito. Cintron will get KTFO by mayorga..cntron better stay away
AeroSixxDynamite 12-21-2004, 03:48 AM first time poster, greetings everybody....
My thoughts on Mayorga: After watching a little bit of the Trinidad fight again....I saw a fighter who actually did carry his power up with him to 160....those wild swinging punches of his landed mostly on Tito's gloves, shoulders and arms and rocked him real good and had the juice to seriously hurt Trinidad if they had landed with any regularity....he simply got counter/combination-punched to death by a devestating boxer/puncher in Tito. All this "blown-up welter" talk in my opinion does not make any sense and is simply an excuse not to give Felix Trinidad any credit for his comeback victory.
I don't think he can make 147 anymore....he is simply too big. He was a very, very big welterweight. The guy admittedly walks around at 175-180lbs; I took the time in looking at his fight record and was astonished to find that he is actually a former Jr.Middleweight [99'-01'] who shrunk himself down to welter the past few years. I think Jr.Middle should be his target weight. I think he'll be comfortable at 154. Even returning to Middleweight isn't out of the question [as long as he stays away from Tito/B-Hop. Those guys love to eat up brawlers like him], but I think his welterweight days are over.
loangunZ 12-21-2004, 04:33 AM wow  mayorga vs vargas thats a fight I want to see
i think his prime is already past...
mayorga is no doubt one of my favourite fighters. it's not that... it's that he has to return at a lower weight class. he struggles to go 12 rounds period, but at middlweight comon now. i say if he faces tito at 147, he mite have a chance.
if he goes to welterweight... let him knock out everyone. spinks got VERY lucky against mayorga. i think it was in the 12th, mayorga landed a big body shot, and spinks went down but the ref said it was a slip. and the two point deductions IMO were dum.
Mayorga gona knock out EVERYONE!!!. lol
mayorga has just as much heart if not more that anyone in the game. His chin is one of if not the best also. I dont see anyone that can knock him out at 154 or 147. when he stuck out his chin against tito i think he was wobbled and played it off good but its still that fact that he did it. i thought as soon as he stuck his chin out his head was going into the third row. it would be great to see him against anyone, hes basically a smaller mike tyson, and 90% of the world will pay to see tyson fight, even though he is past his prime.
Cre_Ace 03-13-2005, 12:49 AM How is Trinidad waiting for Hopkins to get old? First of all, Hopkins is already old, and was old when tito fought him, second, tito likes fighting the best, so I don't think tito would fill good by beating Hopkins knowing that hopkins is not the same fighter who beat him. True or false?
I would like to see a match between Mayorga and the winner of Joval/Vargas at 154lbs.
Would be exciting to say the least.
Zab Super Judah 03-13-2005, 01:03 AM the only problem about mayorga is that..........im wondering how will he be
after the beating he got from tito........boxers usually are never the same
after a beating liek that he was hit wihtalot of flush powershots........and not sure if his chin will be the same....I am hoping he will come back better than ever.......but I am worried
m00ks 03-13-2005, 01:08 AM I agree, he should move back down like DLH. I still think he did better than DLH in the middleweight, though. BTW, Mayorga have already announced he's coming back after he announced his retirement. I guess that site missed it.
Nah, DLH got a 30 million purse :D
m00ks 03-13-2005, 01:10 AM yeah lol..no rematch for mayorga..tito is just to good at MW and hits har as f**K...but tito is acting like a b*tch waiting for hopkins to get old before fighting him...and u know its true...but we'll see... i think hopkins would beat tito in a rematch...MW is just no for mayorga
i mean lamotta (he was 5'8) carried his short height and weight well but mayorga cant seem to...
i think mayorga power and stamine (which he has always had) will be great at 154
Nard can be 55 and would still beat Tito
Famoso Matador 03-13-2005, 01:20 AM Mayorga is fighting against Castillejo. Since Winky left Jr. Middleweight he vacated his WBC crown. Castillejo has been crowned the new WBC champion be default, because he was the interim champion. Mayorga has a shot at a title, i hope he knocks castillejo back to spain. Not that i hate Castillejo, but i want Mayorga to be a champ again!
Hurlex 03-13-2005, 01:40 AM hell yeah he has a great shot,he can probably take simms also....and would have no problem ko'ing Santos
joeboxer 03-13-2005, 02:27 AM wow  mayorga vs vargas thats a fight I want to see
totally agreed. Also a Mosely fight would be interesting. Hell even PBF would be good.
goku13 03-19-2005, 02:43 PM good to see him back on the ring
