View Full Version : Did Taver's stumbling in R12 cost him the fight?
Bombardier 12-20-2004, 08:39 AM At least one of the judges gave Glencoffe round 12, and after watching it a few times I still can't figure out why. The only thing I can think of is that they thought that when Tarver tripped and stumbled they thought he got knocked back by a shot from Glencoffe. Other than that Tarver dominated.
This exposes a flaw in the judging system: the judges have to make up their minds on the spot and there's no way for them to consult others or look at replays. In baseball and football the officials can get together and work out a decision, and in football they can then go to instant replay. Boxing judges have to make snap decisions and never have a chance to review what they saw.
urdaddyinAZ 12-20-2004, 08:54 AM Dude I'm still so pissed off about this fight. I'm not a Tarver nuthugger, as a matter of fact I like Johnson and the way he conducts himself, but he did not win that fight.....I don't care what anyone says. The chic judge had the fight 116-112 Johnson, I'd like to know where she found 8 rounds to give to Johnson!
Now to answer your question......I have no idea how any judge could give Johnson round 12. Tarver was playing possum a little and kinda acting like he was hurt, but it's not the judges job to determine whether he was acting or not. They should judge on punches PERIOD. Tarver tagged him and hurt him in the first minute of the round with some very clean shots. Johnson did out punch him in the last two minutes, but he never landed anything close to what Tarver landed in the first minute. I've heard a few people talk about how alot of Tarver's punches were picked off by Johnson's elbows and gloves. Well watch the fight with both eyes and you'll see Tarver was doing the same thing. Another thing, Tarver punches harder than Johnson (listen to Roy Jones)...Johnson looks like he throws harder because he swings looping punches and grunts. I'm happy for Johnson but I think he lost.
Bombardier 12-20-2004, 09:01 AM I would have been happy with a draw. Either way these guys are gonna rematch, right? Nothing was decided, and besides, who else are they gonna fight? They were probably pretty happy it ended so evenly cause at least now they can crank out more dough with a rematch and probably with a third fight as well.
If the judges had given Tarver R12 it would have been a draw. Glencoffe didn't land anything that remotely seemed to shake Tarver, and for a while it looked like Tarver had a shot at knocking him down. Glencoffe wasn't even pursuing as much as he did in some of the earlier rounds that he won.
urdaddyinAZ 12-20-2004, 09:11 AM Yeah a draw would have been acceptable to me.
Soundtraveler 12-20-2004, 11:37 AM Actually none of the judges had Johnson winning 8 rounds, as you can see on the Official Scorecards. I agree with the scorecards of the 2 judges that had Johnson winning it, in fact the only round I have different is the 12th which I gave to Tarver by the narrowest of margins.
The judge who had it wrong was the one who gave Tarver 8 rounds. Just how Marty Denkins could give Tarver the 4th round and the 11th round is beyond me....
P.S. - I had Round 4 even on my card....
Blood_Child 12-20-2004, 11:56 AM I actually thought that for sure it would be a draw. I had bet on Johnson to win, but I don't think he should've. He has a lot of heart, but I don't think he's got as much skill as Tarver.

11th round was clearly Johnson's, but I thought Tarver won the 4th round also.
m00ks 12-20-2004, 01:43 PM Tarver went break happy and that's what cost him the match.
twospeed99 12-20-2004, 01:52 PM After watching those two schmoes fight, Roy should stay retired if he got beat by them, very pitiful fight if you ask me.There was no power, no speed. Roy in his prime would of had his way with them both.If his skills have eroded to the point where either of these guys beat him please stay retired Roy.**** they both Ko'd Roy and still couldn't sell a PPV
Zab Super Judah 12-20-2004, 01:54 PM johnson won based on activity..the judges must have gave johnson a early lead in the early rounds.....because tarver was laying back jus looking for opportunities......judges usually like active fighters
Bombardier 12-20-2004, 03:26 PM I still can't give 12 to Johnson...he wasn't even pursuing like he was in the earlier rounds. And that was the difference between a win and a draw.
slickhook 12-20-2004, 03:30 PM Tarver lost but at what cost
if he only hit he wouldn't be in ****
Those that bet will only regret
That Jonson has wit
