Some of you may have gathered that I am a former road and studio musician. Also that I have been disabled for the past few years and raising my five kids alone. It's tough for me to ever go out and do something just for me.
One of my favorite bands is the great jazzz group "The Yellow Jackets". I correspond via e-mail with their fine bassist Jimmy Haslip. He is, to my thinking the best there is.(and YES, I have heard Stanley Clark live).
Anyway......they found themselves with a couple of nights off in the midst of an east coast tour and the saxaphonist Bob Mintzer contacted a friend at the University Of Kentucky to see if they might throw together something. The result was "An Evening with the YellowJackets" at the Singletary Fine Arts Center last night. Jimmy, knowing something of my situation, contacted me with the news that I had a seat up front as his guest. It was an incredible show featuring four certifiable geniuses.
We talked a bit after the show with the guys who were sincerely glad to meet "Jimmy's friend".....ME! On top of evrything else, Jimmy told me that it is time for me to start sharing my own gifts again. He knows that my oldest is now 14 and could keep an eye on his sibs occasionally so that DAD can jam a little bit.
He also knows that I own a bass but no bass amp having lost everything in a fire in `96. He knows too, what a financial strain I am under and offered his assistance in getting me a "rig". I was moved to tears...completely blown away. The man...who knows me predomanantly from e-mails....who has a family of his own ....and a busy career touring and recording wants to help a hack like me! Just incredible!!
I have to stop being such a cynic.....there are great people in this world and I wanted to share the story of one of them with you.
