View Full Version : Gracie: St. Pierre can't keep Shields down

Georges St. Pierre has shown a variety of skills in his domination of the UFC welterweight division, but his ability to take down opponents and control them has perhaps been the most overwhelming part of his game.

Cesar Gracie does not think St. Pierre can control UFC 129 title challenger Jake Shields, though.

If Jake Shields finishes GSP, I will saw my right leg off on camera.

I have a feeling hat GSP will not stop Shields at all, and it won't be a domination if he wins.
Shields survived against Henderson's bombs, enough said.

He's also a wrestler/BJJ hybrid so I think he could pull a Koshcheck and actually nullify Pierre's wrestling.

The ONLY way that Shields could win this fight is by a flash KO and that is not happening.

No way in hell is Shields gonna sub GSP
No way in hell is Shields gonna win a decision on GSP.
No way in hell Shields keeps GSP on the ground(that is if he can take him down)

No way in hell Shields wins this fight.

Damn SHields is getting no respect around here lol Sure he might be feather fisted and he might not be the most exciting fighter out there. But he has some serious grappling skills....to say he CANT submit GSP is kind of ridiculous.

WTF? Did anyone see how Shields dominated Dan HEnderson?/ He took Henderson down at will. IMO Henderson is much stronger than GSP and probably as good or better than GSP at wrestling. I would not be surprised if Shields dominates GSP on the gorund and even submits him!! Shields is a very high level grappler!!

Shields can do it, he fought and beat some big names at 185 before. I think however GSP will win by UD but I don't think GSP will have a easy night.

Hendo's wrestling credentials really don't transfer over to MMA. He gets taken down alot more than most wrestler and by people who have way less wrestling ability. GSP is the best mma wrestler in the sport. He'll pick Jake apart on the feet and stuff his takedown attempts all night....

gotta disagree with gracie, i don't see shields beating GSP at all...hopefully it's an interesting fight, but i don't see GSP losing this one.

I think Sheilds has a better chance against Anderson to be honest. His wrestling is good enough to hold Silva down and his Jiu Jitsu is good enough not to get Sonnened....

If you watch MMA you know Shields is a very rugged vet whos pace is insane and he is very smart when it comes down to clutch situations, GSP also. I believe GSP has what it takes to beat Shields, but not easily at all... GSP 4th rd chokeout

i haven't watched much of shields, so i wouldn't know too much about him. but i've seen his ufc debut and his fights against miller and thompson on YT, so i know a little bit of how and what he is good at. i still think GSP takes a decsion over him though, i don't see GSP slowing down. can't wait to see how this fight plays out..

shields has got no chance and this fight is just a little bit short of a full fledged mismatch

True, but most people forget that Hendo had trouble making the weight due to the meds he was on and had to cut a hefty amount in a short timespan. It showed in the fight as he had one burst of offence and was gassed by the end of the first round. It was easy pickings after that. Nevertheless, Shields has a chance, but a very slim one at that.

Sheilds also had Hendo mounted for the better part of 4 rounds and couldn't finish him.....

I still can't believe he survived those bombs. He was OUT!

But he was also out on his feet against Lawler and Daley

The only way i see Shields winning is by a sub. Can he pull it off? possibly but the most probable outcome is GSP by decision. I dont see how GSP can finish Shields and on the other side i cant see how Shields can win a decision.

If Shields wins it will be by a freak spontaneous submission similar to what we say against Silva-Sonnen.

If i were a betting man id put money on a GSP 5 round unanimous.

To SHields' credit, Dan Henderson is one tough SOB and has only been finished by two oppenents...Nogueria and Silva. I know you're pretty biased against Shields kaps, but he's the best fighter GSP has fought since BJ and I honeslty believe GSP will have his hands full.

With that said though, GSP will win this fight by decision. But i would not be surprised if Shields catches him in a submission.

I just don't think he does Cesar Gracie's camp justice. I mean it's hard to find a boring fight from anyone else on that team, and Jake just seems to be full of them lately....

ILL TAKE SHIELDS! nothing more than rooting for the local fighter who is going to be in hostile territory. I think Shields makes the great GSP tap.

this aura of invincibility people put on gsp is making them see this fight in a wrong light
this is not a missmatch they're the best in the division i pick gsp by a close decision

It remains to be seen whether Pierre can keep Shields down.

I'd also like to know how long Shields can keep GSP down. Because if GSP can't keep Shields down or vice versa, GSP will put on a stand up clinic.

WTF? Did anyone see how Shields dominated Dan HEnderson?/ He took Henderson down at will.

So did Bustamante and Ninja Rua and they don't have a lick of wrestling credentials.

Henderson TDD straight up sucks. The only way this fight goes to the ground is if GSP wants it there. Jake does have some sneaky methods of luring opponents to the ground but GSP isn't that stupid as to fall for it.

If Jakes wants to get this to the ground he is going to have to really, really fight for it. So hard he might end up gassing trying to do it.

Jason Miller had his moments on the ground with Shields and another 10 seconds would have choked him out, I'm sure if GSP wanted he could control Jake on the ground. He has some of the best top control in the division and he's very strong.

Everything Shields brings into this fight, BJ Penn brought to his fights with GSP too. Except BJ was a better wrestler in an MMA context, had much better striking and, IMO was much better off his back.

Shields has good wrestling, but he doesn't have stand-up that demands respect, and that will make it even harder to get someone like GSP down.
