Merk: Roy Motivated again!
For the first time in over ten years, Roy Jones Jr. is training with his father Roy Jones Sr. In addition, Roy continues training with longtime trainer Alton Merkerson, who says he has no problem sharing duties with "Big Roy." Coach Merk said Roy is currently sparring with Kippy Warren and Derrick Harmon, and is highly motivated for this fight, which hasn't been the case since a proposed fight with Mike Tyson fell through and Jones returned to the light heavyweight division. "He's the old Roy like I saw in the early 90s," he said. Regarding the alleged hand injury, Coach Merk stated, "Even if it's a problem for Roy, he doesn't express that to me, but I don't see any problem with it because he's the type of warrior that can bite down. The fight will take place October 1 and Roy will be at his best, one-hundred percent."

Does this mean he wasn't motivated for their second fight ? If so, why wasn't he motivated for the rematch against a guy who gave him his roughest night ?

I would like to see Roy recapture his old magic & beat Tarver....but I think his "old magic" was his reflexes, which aren't nearly what they used to be.

I see Tarver catching him & KOing him by the 8th rd.

In all seriousness if Roy wins we are looking at one boring ****ing fight, Roy is the only fighter I kow that can dominate you without ever hitting you.

Tarver is going to knock Roy out of the ring for good this time. Roy is risking his life and it isn't even funny.

Wow, lot of *****boy haters on this site (no surprise). Greatness is always hated. Predicting Roy will get KO'd is one thing, reveling in it is another. Grow up.

I hate predicting this ****. I wouldn't expect Merk to say Roy isn't motivated. We'll see if Roy is motivated when thr bell rings. However, motivated or not, that doesn't mean he'll win. His best at 36 may not be good enough any more.

But, this is a good sign. I'm tryin' not to get my hopes up. Argh.

His dad said he looks like the Roy from the 90's. And his dad is very critical of him.

i think we all gotta remember this thou...roy always said he used boxing as his way to make money and become a businessman. He also saw his cud friend Gmac almost die in the ring......

Given this - i really dont think roy wud come back if he wasnt in decent shape. Had he stayed retired people wud have remembered him as one of the greats....roy jones risks more by coming out of retirement then staying in it - and roy jones has neva been a risk taker....

as a result - im going roy jones on points....

I agree, i think Roy will fight like he did in the first encounter only this time he`ll try harder and get a close but conclusive verdict!

Agree 100%. Roy will outbox Tarver for most of the rounds, but be more fierce and motivated and get a good win, but Tarver won't get "robbed" or anything like that.

risking his life? what are you smoking?

he's been knocked out ONCE with a clean ass punch (tarver), and i dont know what the **** that was from johnson.

you think he's gatti or something? evander holyfield?

buddys barely taken punishment while dominating all those years, let him get into some rough fights now that he's slowed down, it wont kill him...

Roy can say he's more motivated, but he'll also be KOed again, he musta forgot! Roy's chickens against his pitbulls would be more competitive. It's a sad end to a great career and oh so common in boxing and couldn't happen to a bigger ego.
