I think the term Asian is a generic term to describe people of a similar appearance and geographic origin. Certainly within this description you get pride in their origin, i.e. Indian, Pakistani etc. I don't think there's anything derogatory in doing this, if there were then I'm sure the folks it affects would have told us by now.

That whole island area is tricky. you got the fiji, the somoans, tonga, phillipines, indonesia.... and so forth. but they are all different but all located near asia at the same time this geography stuff just is plain confusing.
