Jones claims that Jorge Castro was his toughest ever fight, but I think that Parks was better than Castro. RwK 09-21-2005, 01:26 AM Red Tank-Top of death = The Iceman. ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-21-2005, 01:32 AM Lamar was a very tough fighter, HARD PUNCHER, good boxer. GREAT body puncher. And the two times that I fought Lamar as amateurs in the nationals ROY JONES, SR. was in his corner. I think Lamar would have punished Castro. I think RJ meant that Castro was physically the toughest but not skill wise. I sparred Castro, too, and he was a real tough guy but Roy fought many better, sharper boxers. ICE JUYJUY 09-21-2005, 01:35 AM How about if the McClellan-Parks fight had gone ahead? hectari 09-21-2005, 01:58 AM Wow! how many punches did you unload on jones jr? That was amazing! He looked slow in their and he always had bad defense is this true? how old was thier he looks kinda fat. plus do you think he really took roids? ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-21-2005, 11:38 AM No, he was far from fat. He was a middleweight right there when we sparred. Roy was always brilliant outside fighter and fighting on the inside wasn't his game, really. I don't remember the details of our sparring that day but I am sure we sparred a lot and we were tired. That was later in the rounds hectari 09-21-2005, 11:55 AM No, he was far from fat. He was a middleweight right there when we sparred. Roy was always brilliant outside fighter and fighting on the inside wasn't his game, really. I don't remember the details of our sparring that day but I am sure we sparred a lot and we were tired. That was later in the rounds Wow you had the BLUEPRINT to beat Roy Jones JR before any of these guys! How come you guys never fought? imagine if you fought you would have stopped the great roy jones jr before he became anything. In that gif you clearly exposed him he was getting hit with some clean shots. scap 09-21-2005, 11:57 AM Lamar Parks was my favorite fighter for a couple years and I was heartbroken when he came down with HIV, I was a little bit scared when I saw that he was going to face Gerald in his next fight and it is amazing in a horrible way what happened to both men before they were to square off... Who would you have taken between PArks and Hopkins at that time when both men were in the top ten in the middleweight division? puppy_dogg 09-21-2005, 11:58 AM thats some really cool ****, iceman.. do you remember what year that was in? hectari 09-21-2005, 12:01 PM Lamar Parks was my favorite fighter for a couple years and I was heartbroken when he came down with HIV, I was a little bit scared when I saw that he was going to face Gerald in his next fight and it is amazing in a horrible way what happened to both men before they were to square off... Who would you have taken between PArks and Hopkins at that time when both men were in the top ten in the middleweight division? Ya it is trully sad what happend, I heard lamar had a sex addiction as well. But imagine if they fought I would have to put my money on gerald. Gerald looks like a lighter skin version of hopkins are they related? Super_Lightweight 09-21-2005, 12:31 PM Wow you had the BLUEPRINT to beat Roy Jones JR before any of these guys! How come you guys never fought? imagine if you fought you would have stopped the great roy jones jr before he became anything. In that gif you clearly exposed him he was getting hit with some clean shots. Iceman will be the first to tell you, fighting someone and sparring someone are two totally different things. Often times RJJ would fight more close-quartered and get hit more in order to prep himself for fights. Getting hit clean in sparring by a very good fighter who is bigger than you does not make you "exposed". Kid Achilles 09-21-2005, 12:54 PM Ice Man John deserves all the credit in the world for being able to spar with RJJ on such even terms but his intent I'm sure was not to "expose" RJJ or anything like that. It's just sparring, and only a snippet of one session at that. Do you really think in every session, against world class sparring partners, RJJ never broke a sweat? Everyone struggles in sparring and gets hit. It's a time to experiment and expand your paramaters as a fighter. RJJ was probably working on sharpening up on the inside, a game where John was superior. The result was that John had the upper hand for a while. In an actual match with repuation on the line Jones would have kept at a distance distance and likely (no offense to John who was very very good in his own right) did his thing and won. Still it's way cool to see you landing some good leather on Jones. No one else on this forum can say they did the same with a prime all time great. hectari 09-21-2005, 01:08 PM Ice Man John deserves all the credit in the world for being able to spar with RJJ on such even terms but his intent I'm sure was not to "expose" RJJ or anything like that. Ya and it kinda shows Roy jones jr has no inside game! He was even trying to work on it in that gif and that was many years ago! He clearly cannot fight on the inside or off the ropes damn how come he couldnt adapt or get an inside game going after all these years? are some fighters just not capable of it. That is why roy jones cannot last in his older years beause he is slower then he was and you cannot rely on reflexes alone most fighters when they get older rely on an inside game since theire legs arent as fast as they used to or fight off the ropes like ali and james toney. Sad to say Jones weakness is his defense. He has marvelous speed and power but failing to use the fundemental defensive basics of boxing is his downfall. I guess it was habit forming. Iceman I have a question: would you ever let one of your fighters train like that with no defense and just feints? puppy_dogg 09-21-2005, 01:17 PM look at roys fights with brannon and sosa, especialy the merqui sosa fight. mabye they were'nt the best of the best kinda fighters but roy had game on the inside, mostly cause of those fast powerful hands but its not like you were gonna wipe jones out just by getting in on him. ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-21-2005, 01:39 PM Gerald was VERY susceptible to good boxers (he lost decisions to Ralph Ward and Dennis Milton). Lamar could PUNCH hard and he could box too. I would say Lamar had a VERY good chance at beating him and actually, Roys Dad Big Roy) told me he thought Lamar would have won. As far as our sparring goes, RJ was always ALWAYS in top condition. I was a super middle at the time and he was a middle and on the inside he was far from the strongest guy I ever boxed. Roy was a hard PUNCHER but that doesn't always mean a person is a strong fighter. Anyway, Roy was on the ropes a lot later on in the rounds of our sparring after I kept going to him and working him hard..in the beginning of the rounds it was MUCH MUCH harder to catch up to him like that. It took TIME to get him like that, you know? I have sparred and fought MANY MANY top flight world champions, gold medalists, contenders, etc.... RJ was overall the best of the bunch ICE scap 09-21-2005, 02:01 PM Any clue what Lamar is doing now? hectari 09-21-2005, 02:03 PM Gerald was VERY susceptible to good boxers (he lost decisions to Ralph Ward and Dennis Milton). I heard he gained alot of weight and is doing ok. But what must really suck is how come guys with sexual appetites like lamar and magic johnson last once they get HIV? I mean it makes me wonder wont they still have the hunger for women and its ironic how they can control their appetite when they get aids. They can no longer have sex and they seem cool with it I just wonder why couldnt they control their wild ways of unprotected sex back then? scap 09-21-2005, 02:38 PM I heard he gained alot of weight and is doing ok. Dont be fooled by guys like Morrison, Lamar and Magic, **** Magic ****ed my sister 6 months ago in the bathroom at a Laker game and when I told her he had HIV she told me to **** off and mind my own business. These guys are probably pounding more then they ever have, the difference is they now have to use a little protection. ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-21-2005, 02:58 PM I talk to Lamar all the time now. We keep in touch via nextel 2 way. he is in South Carolina training some guys and while he has gained weight he always sounds real good when we speak. scap 09-21-2005, 03:06 PM I talk to Lamar all the time now. Iceman, you let Kidfire no that he still has fans that think about him (not just in SC, but in Seattle too)! There was a 2-3 year stretch where I rooted harder for Lamar then any other fighter (including Greg Haugen)! Please let him know that he was one helluva a fighter and he was an amazing tv fighter and he will never be forgotten amongst cult fans! scap 09-21-2005, 03:07 PM Ice, you should talk to Rick and arrange a chat with Lamar and yourself, I would die to chat with Lamar Parks. ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-21-2005, 03:19 PM I tell you what, I will talk to Lamar real soon and see if he is up to it, OK ? I doubt it because magic would get a lawsuit witht he quickness. He is worth alot of money and no girl is dumb enough to **** magic johnson knowning he has aids even with protection unless she has aids herself. hectari 09-21-2005, 03:45 PM I tell you what, I will talk to Lamar real soon and see if he is up to it, OK ? I cant promise anything ICE Cool hope you get in contact with him. Oh ya It was good seeing you on espn working the corner of Lawrence Clay Bey. Do you have any other fighters you train any amatuers on the up and up? Also is it easier training lighter weight fighters then heavy's, I say this cause some guy was saying on an interenet radio show that heavy weights are not as disciplined since they dont have to make a certain weight. scap 09-21-2005, 03:48 PM LMAO are you serious about magic? I just think its BS cause Magic Johnson was my boss for a while I worked at the starbucks he owned, and he is very cool guy I have talked to him about 7 times he came by often I worked at the starbucks in Commerce Atlantic & Washington. I dont believe that kinda stuff your sister seems like a gossiper and not saying anything against your sister but most girls like that are not stand up people or trustworthy. Londonerz 09-21-2005, 05:59 PM sorry for my ignorance - but who is iceman? Super_Lightweight 09-21-2005, 06:06 PM Iceman John Scully is the man who started this thread. He was a successful 168 lbs fighter back in the 90's. He had a close fight with p4p star Michael Nunn (some say he was robbed) and he fought other very notable fighters of the time such as Graciano R., and others I can't remember at the moment. He was a good, big, and powerful pressure fighter. He trains now and hopefully STAYS retired! Had a good career. Londonerz 09-21-2005, 06:17 PM cool thanx for that....its a great forum he has opened up here. And good to see he really fought the best!! I think RJJ is one of the greatest boxers of all time - wat is iceman's opinion given he fought him and other top contenders? hectari 09-21-2005, 06:19 PM Ya hopefully iceman will become one of the greatest trainers soon. I hope he trains some featherweights and welters my favorite division. roberson2u 09-21-2005, 09:04 PM i got this video and scully ****ed em up ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 09-21-2005, 09:42 PM I dont see myself fighting again for several reasons, none of what are that I don't think I could still do it. I still spar quite often and I am able to do ten rounds easily, even easier than when I was younger. Experience is a beautiful thing. Just in the last 2 years I have sparred with guys like Pemberton, Manfredo, Ahmed Kaddour, Richie Lamontagne, Lonne Bradley, etc etc. I am comfortable training fighters and have had good success... I also have been training amateurs since 1993 and am building up local teams again... add that to a 9 month old daughter and it's a lot on my plate. I will keep sparring until I am no longer able, though. I did six last night, 3 with a heavyweight and 3 wtih a middleweight. Feel good. Do you think boxing is getting a worse and worse rap? Alot of people I talk to say boxing is disgusting and savage. Just last week people were talking about a fight they never saw the levander johnson fight cause it was in the newspaper front page, it seems boxing only gets front sports billing when it is tyson, or something devastating like with brian viloria hurting ruben conteras and levander johnson almost dying. spinksjinx 09-21-2005, 10:13 PM How good are you with Mitts? The only thing boxing gets exposure over is when Mike Tyson gropes or smacks women or when a boxer is in critical condition....They can mention that the Spurs win the championship but they cant mention Olympic Bronze medalist dethroning Bernard Hopkins who was the longest reigning middleweight champion EVER!....Yeah it is getting a bad rap.... The saying usually goes, Any press is good press but not in the case of boxing. hectari 09-21-2005, 11:57 PM The only thing boxing gets exposure over is when Mike Tyson gropes or smacks women or when a boxer is in critical condition....They can mention that the Spurs win the championship but they cant mention Olympic Bronze medalist dethroning Bernard Hopkins who was the longest reigning middleweight champion EVER!....Yeah it is getting a bad rap.... My teacher used to tell me boxing was one of the tops sports when he was growing up in the 1950s familys would sit around the radios and black and whites on friday just to watch or listen to the fight, he said it was sorta a family bonding event. Now it lacked its luster mainly due to ppv I believe thanks don king for taking boxing off of mainstream tv! so you can benifit for yourself. I still believe if fighters fought on abc, and nbc like the 70s and 80's they would get more sponsors and exposure. |
