Hey Ice, how do you think Lamar Parks would of fared against Jones?

Jones claims that Jorge Castro was his toughest ever fight, but I think that Parks was better than Castro.

Lamar was a very tough fighter, HARD PUNCHER, good boxer. GREAT body puncher. And the two times that I fought Lamar as amateurs in the nationals ROY JONES, SR. was in his corner. I think Lamar would have punished Castro. I think RJ meant that Castro was physically the toughest but not skill wise. I sparred Castro, too, and he was a real tough guy but Roy fought many better, sharper boxers.

No, he was far from fat. He was a middleweight right there when we sparred. Roy was always brilliant outside fighter and fighting on the inside wasn't his game, really. I don't remember the details of our sparring that day but I am sure we sparred a lot and we were tired. That was later in the rounds

Iceman will be the first to tell you, fighting someone and sparring someone are two totally different things. Often times RJJ would fight more close-quartered and get hit more in order to prep himself for fights.

Getting hit clean in sparring by a very good fighter who is bigger than you does not make you "exposed".

Ice Man John deserves all the credit in the world for being able to spar with RJJ on such even terms but his intent I'm sure was not to "expose" RJJ or anything like that. It's just sparring, and only a snippet of one session at that. Do you really think in every session, against world class sparring partners, RJJ never broke a sweat? Everyone struggles in sparring and gets hit. It's a time to experiment and expand your paramaters as a fighter. RJJ was probably working on sharpening up on the inside, a game where John was superior. The result was that John had the upper hand for a while.

In an actual match with repuation on the line Jones would have kept at a distance distance and likely (no offense to John who was very very good in his own right) did his thing and won.

Still it's way cool to see you landing some good leather on Jones. No one else on this forum can say they did the same with a prime all time great.

Ya and it kinda shows Roy jones jr has no inside game! He was even trying to work on it in that gif and that was many years ago! He clearly cannot fight on the inside or off the ropes damn how come he couldnt adapt or get an inside game going after all these years? are some fighters just not capable of it. That is why roy jones cannot last in his older years beause he is slower then he was and you cannot rely on reflexes alone most fighters when they get older rely on an inside game since theire legs arent as fast as they used to or fight off the ropes like ali and james toney. Sad to say Jones weakness is his defense. He has marvelous speed and power but failing to use the fundemental defensive basics of boxing is his downfall. I guess it was habit forming.

look at roys fights with brannon and sosa, especialy the merqui sosa fight. mabye they were'nt the best of the best kinda fighters but roy had game on the inside, mostly cause of those fast powerful hands but its not like you were gonna wipe jones out just by getting in on him.

Iceman, you let Kidfire no that he still has fans that think about him (not just in SC, but in Seattle too)! There was a 2-3 year stretch where I rooted harder for Lamar then any other fighter (including Greg Haugen)!

Please let him know that he was one helluva a fighter and he was an amazing tv fighter and he will never be forgotten amongst cult fans!

sorry for my ignorance - but who is iceman?

Iceman John Scully is the man who started this thread. He was a successful 168 lbs fighter back in the 90's. He had a close fight with p4p star Michael Nunn (some say he was robbed) and he fought other very notable fighters of the time such as Graciano R., and others I can't remember at the moment. He was a good, big, and powerful pressure fighter. He trains now and hopefully STAYS retired! Had a good career.

cool thanx for that....its a great forum he has opened up here. And good to see he really fought the best!! I think RJJ is one of the greatest boxers of all time - wat is iceman's opinion given he fought him and other top contenders?

Ya hopefully iceman will become one of the greatest trainers soon. I hope he trains some featherweights and welters my favorite division.

I dont see myself fighting again for several reasons, none of what are that I don't think I could still do it. I still spar quite often and I am able to do ten rounds easily, even easier than when I was younger. Experience is a beautiful thing. Just in the last 2 years I have sparred with guys like Pemberton, Manfredo, Ahmed Kaddour, Richie Lamontagne, Lonne Bradley, etc etc. I am comfortable training fighters and have had good success... I also have been training amateurs since 1993 and am building up local teams again... add that to a 9 month old daughter and it's a lot on my plate. I will keep sparring until I am no longer able, though. I did six last night, 3 with a heavyweight and 3 wtih a middleweight. Feel good.

Just last week people were talking about a fight they never saw the levander johnson fight cause it was in the newspaper front page, it seems boxing only gets front sports billing when it is tyson, or something devastating like with brian viloria hurting ruben conteras and levander johnson almost dying.

Ya it trully sucks! My teacher used to tell me boxing was one of the tops sports when he was growing up in the 1950s familys would sit around the radios and black and whites on friday just to watch or listen to the fight, he said it was sorta a family bonding event.

Now it lacked its luster mainly due to ppv I believe thanks don king for taking boxing off of mainstream tv! so you can benifit for yourself.

I still believe if fighters fought on abc, and nbc like the 70s and 80's they would get more sponsors and exposure.
