I'm sorry, my trainer doesn't fight, he's a TRAINER not a FIGHTER. He trained the #1 light heavyweight in the country, he is the BEST at 178 in the WHOLE country, he fought nationals, Puerto Rico, Russia, everything.

Same with the lightweigtht, except his #2.

Springfield gets a boxing gym
Fitness is personal. Some students run, some lift weights, some do aerobics. SMS students are now kicking and punching their way back into shape.

Power Zone is Springfield's newest boxing facility. Equipped with a full boxing gym, Power Zone also offers classes in kick boxing and boxerobics.

"I would say that 30 to 40 percent of our memberships are SMS students," owner Dennis Black said.

"We have had a tremendous response from the Springfield community, as well as Drury and Evangel colleges."

Black, a former SMS student, opened Power Zone in December of 1998 and has been operating for less than two months.

"I looked at several locations, but the Division and Glenstone intersection is a very noticeable one," Black said. "I'm excited to be back in Springfield and have success in my hometown."

Black is a seventh degree black-belt in Tae-Kwan Do, a former Army Airborne Ranger, and a world champion kick boxer.

Tae-Bo or Black's version "boxerobics", the combination of kick boxing and aerobics, has brought many students to Black's gym, including senior mass media major, Brandy Keffer.

"Boxerobics is a great workout, but the weights and self-defense is what makes it challenging," Keffer said. "It is laid back, but you are still expected to do your best, and unlike other gym's, you aren't being displayed in front of everyone."

Black's Boxerobics is like Tae-Bo, but his classes offer more personal attention than the television Tae-Bo programs and include a self-defense element.

"We can go around the class and help correct the individuals form," Black said. "Correct technique is important, because if your going to put that much effort into something, why not do it right.

"The kick boxing aspect allows the individual to have more resistance training and helps define muscles."

Even members of the SMS staff are getting into the action. Rose Viau, New Hall director, enjoys the self defense portion of the class.

"It is different than a regular fitness center," Viau said. "I came here for the self-defense, and it is a great workout."

Boxing is a sport that had limited showing in the Ozarks, but with the addition of Power Zone, many can now participate. In recent years Remington's has promoted a few boxing matches and more recently the Tough Man Contest has been held in Springfield.

"Being from Springfield, I felt that we needed this type of facility in the community," Black said.

Power Zone is one of only a handful of gyms in the Springfield area that train professional boxers. Men and women of all ages are welcome to box at the gym. Power Zone has athletes from ages 12 to 60.

The 12 to 16 year old groups practice foot work, technique, coodination, balance and strength. The 16-year-olds and older focus on putting all the techniques and strategy together while progressing through the amateur level.

Beginners on average fight at the amateur level for the first 2 to 3 years. After building their experience and confidence, they progress to the professional arena and fight for a title.

Black is currently coaching five professional boxers at the gym, three males and two females.

Jimmy "Country Boy" Hager, who is 15-0, and fought in Denmark last week, will be fighting at Friday Night Fights. Black is promoting the event to be held March 19 at the Shrine Mosque. The action begins at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are $15 for general admission, $35 for ring side, and may be purchased through Ticketmaster or at Famous Barr.

There are 10 fights on the card including kick boxing, women's boxing and a title fight. Hager will be fighting for the North American Super Middleweight title against Charles "The Barber" Olivar.

Former SMS student, Ron Gladden (10-3) from Kentucky, will also fight in the 135lb weight class. His opponent Randy Reddey from Indiana is a veteran to boxing with over 50 professional bouts. A guest appearance by Steve Cardinas a former Red Power Ranger is also on the docit.

Black's gym is open to anyone who is interested in boxing or Boxerobics. The gym is open six days a week noon to 9:00 p.m.

The boxerobics class is held Monday through Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The cost of membership is $39 a month for a 12 month program.

Power Zone is located on the southeast corner of Division and Glenstone.

I been taking classes for 2 1/2 yrs in Muay Thai Kick Boxing but, not pure 100% boxing.

I am at a "boxerobics" gym right now. Ive run the classes and done personal training with the clients. Let me tell you Esechuey, taking those classes will in no way teach you to fight. You could take those classes for 5 years and I'll bet that when you finally step in the ring with a well schooled fighter that you will be dropped and then suspended for 90 days ( as the rule states in the usa/abf rulebook when suffering an extremely bad knockout) When you do come to your senses I would hope that you would then see where your error in judgement came from and change your thinking. Then possibly, after your suspension was fully served, you could get into a "Boxing" gym where you would be taught to fight, to train and to have respect for other fighters. Till then I would just consider you an loud ass for the things that you have stated in this thread.

How is the referee stuff going?

Havent been doing much at all lately. Got layed off from work, the car broke down and Im just struggling to stay afloat in this crazy world. I believe that I told you guys that I passed the ABC test to begin doing the professionals, I have not however been able to raise the registration fee to begin yet. It will come soon though. I will certainly let you guys know when I get my start with the pros. Thanks for asking Rippuh.

What basically is boxerobics?Like what does it consist of cause my Aunt did it, and she said it was mostly filled with women old and young and a few gay men.

Its an aerobic workout where some basic boxing techniques are used. The classes are nonstop for about an hour. It is a great way to get into shape. At our gym we work the aerobics on heavybags to build abit more muscle than just shodowboxing type stuff. It does seem that the women have taken to the idea greater than the men have, most of our classes are 80-90% women. That, however, in no way means that it is a feminine thing to do, it just means that the women seem to like it more than the men at this time. Next year, Stallone or some famous tough guy may promote the boxer aerobic thing and then the men will come out of the wood work.
