KHAN READY TO IMPRESS IN SCOTLAND

Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan is relishing the opportunity of fighting in Scotland for the first time on November 5.
The teenage prodigy takes on Walsall's Steve Gethin at the Braehead Arena in his third professional bout having prevailed in Bolton and Cardiff.

And the 18-year-old light-welterweight is expecting plenty of support from the fans north of the border.

He said: "It's nice to go all over and box, it gives everyone a chance to see me fight. Straight after the Olympics I got a lot of fan mail from Scotland asking when I'm going to box up in Scotland.

"There is a big Scottish-Asian community up here and they are well behind me and I get a lot of letters from them but it's not only them, it's all Scottish people.

"I don't know why I have support from Scotland, they just say they like the way I box. I've been to the borders but this is the furthest north that I've been. There were a few amateur championships in Scotland but I never got the chance to come here, they kept me away!"

Khan is fighting on the undercard of Scott Harrison's defence of his WBO featherweight title against an as yet unnamed opponent.

The Scot, who had to cancel the original fight in October due to injury, will discover his new opponent on Thursday after Spend Abazi had to withdraw after breaking his elbow in training.

Because you won an Olympic silver, fought one of the best amateurs in the world for it then went on to beat the very same man, oh and you can box a bit too :D
As for him being a bad boy I don't see that myself he always seems very shy & timid when I've saw him speak, I feel sorry for Khan here because if the Harrison opponent is ****(that's the first i've heard Abazi's name mentioned) then there won't be a great turn out for him, like Khan said there is a big asian community up here but I don't know if they'd pay to see him going through the motions.
I just saw a report on the Harrison/Khan bill and Warren was saying the American tv budget has been used up for this year so there will be no big fights until next year for Scott, Harrison SOUNDS as though he wants a unification because he said he didn't want to retire from boxing having not given it everything or not fought some of the other champions, he also said he's thinking of moving up to 130 to get fights which I don't get, if it's because of the weight I can believe that but he made it sound as though he was being avoided at 126 which isn't the case.

If those are his intentions, perhaps he needs to move away from Frank Warren now.

I was a bit puzzled m8 it was made to sound like he couldn't get fights at 126 which is bollox, Harrison talks as if he wants it but as you say whether Warren wants it is another matter

When he turned pro there was talk of him getting too big for his boots. However, I saw his last fight and the interview afterwards. I thought he made a good balance of respect for his opponent and humility as to his continued learning process. It must be difficult avoiding having his head turned as he is so young but if he can continue being a good boxer and a good human being then he will have the respect of the public, which is more than that nob Naz had because he was exactly the polar opposite as a person.

i think amir khan needs to fight a decent boxer. The first guy he thought was pathetic and got KO in about a minute. The next guy was better but he out classed him i was bit disapionted he did not KO him

Whoever he fights now is all about career development - if your point is that the guys he's fighting are not helping him develop then you can argue the case, but if you're upset he's not in competitive fights then you're missing the point of the fights that he taking.

Personally I think he's looked pretty damn good so far - he is showing noticeable adaptions from the amateur game, and some maturity in his shot selection, especially to the body

Amir khan is being hyped too much.

I think people need to slow down hes just started.

I know he's got a bright future but people are already saying that he is going to be a world champion, khan has been pressured to live up to this ever since he got a silver medal at the olympics. Every time he will have a boxing match his shoulders will be carrying the strain and expectations of everyone around him to win.

It's early still, amir will only grow and develop into a stronger fighter and will probably have his shot at a world title.
But then again he might turn into another audley harrison and fight bums and wait till it's too late.

I don't think Harrison is being avoided, I think it's more to do with him not being able to generate enough money as to why people don't wanna fight him. - (Tough fight, get paid peanuts).

I think there is one fighter out there that would beat Harrison 10 out of 10 times, and that's Juan Manuel Marquez. The way I see it, styles make figths and Marquez is probably the best counter puncher in the game today. He'd be Harrison's worst nightmare!

With regards to Harrison fighting Barrera, Morlaes, Pacquiao, Chi, Larios, Guzman, etc... I could never count him out... I think he'd start the under-dog in all these fights, but Harrison has a rare comodity which you can't train into a fighter... Despite not being as gifted as the above, he'll never give up because he wants it so bad. A fighter that thinks this way can never be counted out!

That makes a lot of sense m8 and sounds more likely to me.
I couldn't agree more on Marquez, we all saw his skill in coming back to 'win' the pacman fight! but I was watching his bout with Manuel Medina the other day (and this was b4 Medina fought Harrison twice!) He's got every punch in the book but in particular I noticed his counter left hook, man what a punch, everytime Medina threw a right he was getting hammered with counter lefts & they were laser quick too. Harrison has a shot with anyone who'll stand and fight but Marquez would really do a number on him.

Oh & sorry to the thread maker! :hijacked:

This hasn't been confirmed & I haven't seen it posted anywhere else but if true there's a couple of good fights lined up for the Harrison undercard:

John Simpson 13-2 v Andy Morris 11-0 for the British featherweight title that Simpson was robbed of winning against Dazzo Wiliams a while back.

Kevin McIntyre 22-3 v Nigel Wright 14-1 in an eliminator for the British title but i'm not sure what weight as Kevin is usually a welter and Wright a lt welter.

You have Amir Khan who's expected to win easily and also Gary Young, Ricky Burns & Willie Limond against tba's so even without Harrison that's a nice little bill but if the Harrison opponent is good enough this'll be an excellent nights boxing and with a lineup like that I don't think any of the Frank's will be able to moan about poor ticket sales this time so fingers crossed!

I thought Nicky Cook held that belt?... Along with the British-Commonwealth/European.

 Have the Board stripped him?

Cook gave up the belt when he became Chi's mandatory, I guess he gave up the European as well, bit of a gamble but him and his team are obviously confident.

 I hadn't even heard that he'd given up his European belt!

With the amount of bogus/crappy champions there are in the other weight divisions, poor Nicky Cook has got a real hard bastard champion - IN JIN CHI to rip the belts away from.

Not gonna be easy!

I'm only guessing he's given up the European since he's definitely given up the British, even though Chi came to Manchester he doesn't seem like the sort who'll want to defend abroad, he seems quite happy fighting at home so that makes it even harder for Cookie and I give him credit for not sitting on those belts, he could easily have made a few defences & earned some bread (which is what I think he should have done!) top marks for wanting the real thing, though if Chi destroys him he's nothing to fall back on (If he has actually given up all the belts that is!) Chi was given real trouble by Sugama not long ago so the time may be right for Cook to spring an upset.
