in 1985-1989 was tysons prime.
he was trained by kevin rooney
and he was sharp. he sparred with
both holyfield and lennox lewis in the
gym during those years and whooped both
thier ass in the gym. it is well written about.
after 1989 kevin rooney stopped training him
and tyson skills started to waste. thats why
he suffered that first loss in 1990. anyone who
beat tyson after 1989 beat a washed up fighter.
between 1985 and 1989 tyson was the greatest and
no one in history can beat that technical machine.

Tyson's prime was 1986-1988. Tyson was NOT at his best in 1989. His career ended in June 1988 when he knocked out the Lineal Champion in one round and left the Catskills.

I dont agree that after tyson left rooney he was washed up he was still a very good fighter but he abandoing the headmovement the jabbing , combination punching and footwork which is what made him unbeatable , he basically became a slugger a one punch at a time headhunter he didnt box anymore just slugged but he was sill able to overcome fighters with his speed and power except for buster douglas and evander holyfield .

that is why he was washed up.
he stopped doing all the things that
rooney taught him thats what i meant.

thats not being washed up, being washed up is the plodding version from neilson onwards, if your washed up you cannot compete at the top level or near the toplevel like tyson did, especially up to 96

I agree. Tyson after 1988 was not the same vicious fighter, but he wasn't washed up. After firing Kevin Rooney in 1988, he abandoned the peek-a-boo style and was pretty much a puncher with decent combinations. What made him still a good fighter after 1988 was his young age, speed and punching power. But when fighting other great fighers such as Holyfield, he was exposed.

the tyson that trained with kevin rooney
would have beaten holyfield. he beat him
in the gym in 1984 it is written about.

true. but he was only 75% as
good as he used to be. watch the
old tapes youll see the difference.
before 1989 he was sharp. head movement
bobbing and weaving and fast combos. he stopped
doing all that after 1989.

no doubt jr, but being 75% of your best is not washed up, his decline did start in 89 but he was still a good fighter til 2000 imo

tyson at 18 was a monster but still green. He was in his prime from 20-22.

exactly look at benitez, some fighters peak early and no-one said he was in his prime in 84, most are saying 86 - 88 or 89

he suffered that first loss in 1990. anyone who

between 1985 and 1989 tyson was the greatest and
no one in history can beat that technical machine.

Even if Rooney was still training Tyson, Buster would have won. It didn't have to do with Rooney- it had to do with Tyson's style, and secondly, his size. Tyson's people had said many times, that Tyson is a great puncher but there are certain styles that he is susceptible to. The main thing being iron will coupled with an iron jab, but also extremely susceptible to an open gloved plodding style fighter. A fighter like Tyson commits suicide fighting an open gloved fighter like, say, Foreman, who he DUCKED. Buster simply found the spot to put the jab and it worked all night- it wouldn't have mattered if Tyson was in better or worse shape, that's a MENTAL thing. He failed to MENTALLY ADAPT to the jab, the universal 'setup punch'. And every big fight he's had since then, he has FAILED, TIME AND TIME AGAIN, TO ADAPT TO THE JAB.

and please, "technical machine"?

use a word like "raging machine" for tyson, use words like "technical machine" for guys like nard

===============================

Idiots look to be smarter than you. When Tyson was starting peak, Holy was struggling with Qawi and Lewis was fighting 3 rounders in headgear and pillows. Tyson produced a journeyman's 13-6 record over the past 15 yrs, quite a come down from 37-0 with 33 KOs going into the Douglas bout during his first 5 yrs. Study up. There's much more to the story.

i think washed up is to harsh a word, because he did some real good stuff after then, but i agree he was never as good as he was from 85-88.

that tyson would destroy anyone that there ever was, ali, liston, marciano, patterson, dempsey, jack johnson, lewis, holfield, etc...

i think the tyson of 96 who won the titles from bruno and seldon beats any of them also, but holyfield fouled the whole damn fight, and lewis fought a drugged up tyson.

By those standards you laid out, Mike Tyson must've been washed up in Aug of '86, seeing as how he wasn't at all sharp against Nino Ribalta, didn't use much head movement against him, nor did he throw many combinations in that fight and instead relied more on trying to end things with one punch.
