Oscar De La Hoya has confirmed that he will not retire. He is in the midst of planning a return to the ring. He will not continue as a middleweight though. He will not even be a light middleweight. Instead, De La Hoya will drop 2 weight classes to fight again as a welterweight. He originally left the division after stopping Arturo Gatti in March of 2001.

Speaking to the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia, De La Hoya said, "From 147 to 150, that's my natural weight. It's almost impossible to do something in the 154 or 160 divisions. It's too heavy for me."

The Golden Boy has not performed well above 150 pounds. Since he left the welterweight division he has gone 4-2. On top of that, one of the wins was a disputed one against Felix Sturm and another was a brawl with Fernando Vargas where Oscar was badly hurt a number of times. Under 150 his record is 33-2. The two losses were a split decision with Shane Mosley and a robbery against Felix Trinidad.

This move by De La Hoya puts an end to a potential rematch with Trinidad who is campaigning at middleweight. He said, "If he wants to come down, the door is open. But it would not be very intelligent from my part to go up in weight."

Will De La Hoya avoid yet another southpaw (Zab Judah)?

I also have a quick question...
Just because De La Hoya and Hopkins are business partners, will they ever train or get together on more of a personal level as far as boxing goes?

This is where he belongs. I think he'll become champ again and maybe we'll see DLH vs. Cintron in a championship fight.

Dlh just doesn't have it anymore...His last good fight was against Vargas...he can't make 140 and at 147 he will be very weak...Plus now Mosley will go after him to beat him one more time...

De La Hoya won that fight against Tito, the judges did Trinidad a favor.

Dlh would destroy Cotto, judah and everyone else at 147. The only person I see giving him problems is Tszyu who has the power to do damage but I would still back dlh to outbox him.

Bring on 2005!!!

very smart for oscar to do. he understands his limitations. going to middleweight was too much for him. at least at welterweight he has a better chance to reclaim some glory. hopefully though we see a rematch with him a tito somehow. maybe they can meet at junior middlewieght.

de la hoya is the most business minded of them all......and he can't stay in the middleweight division because he'll get his ass kicked and therefore lose business appeal......thus he steps down and now people are starting to think of him differently now seeing that he will drop to welter......but it is more than clear that this guy is only orientated by the big bucks, so you must take your hat off to him as he has most boxing fans fooled.

DLH was made for the WW division. There is still a lot of high money/low risk fights still there.
