September 19, 2002 -- In his first public appearance since the crushing loss to Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas was in good spirits and is planning to continue his boxing career.
Vargas held a press conference today and spoke to the media about what happened on September 14th when he lost his WBA jr. middleweight title to De La Hoya by TKO.
"I thought I was winning the fight. I was putting pressure on Oscar and hitting him with the harder shots ... I felt strong, but I was unable to get him out of there. He caught me with a good shot. That's boxing."
Vargas gave a lot of credit to the boxing skills of De La Hoya and said "De La Hoya came to fight and not to run -- I respect him for that."
Coming to fight for De La Hoya was something that was questionable in the minds of many before the match, because of his performance during the final rounds of Trinidad fight, three years ago.
But that was the De La Hoya of old and now we could be seeing a new Oscar.
The turning point of the fight came in the tenth round when De La Hoya rocked Vargas with a left hook in the final seconds of the tenth round. With Vargas' head not completely clear, De La Hoya came out strong in the 11th and put Vargas down on his back. Vargas managed to get up, but the fight was stopped seconds later when Vargas didn't respond to a barrage of punches by De La Hoya.
Vargas did finish the fight on his feet.
Despite getting knocked down by De La Hoya and getting his face bloodied, Vargas felt former champion, Felix "Tito" Trinidad is much more of a devastating puncher. "I was hit a hundred times harder by Trinidad," said Vargas when he was questioned about the power of De La Hoya. "I just got caught."
Vargas seemed satisfied with his performance against De La Hoya and said that the love from his fans, makes him feel good and gives him satisfaction. "With the Trinidad fight, I was mad at God." said Vargas in a calm tone of voice. "Now it's different, my fans are happy, I'm in peace with God and that makes me happy."
Vargas is looking to getting another world title and would love to get a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya, but if not, he will look at challenging Winky Wright for the IBF jr. middleweight title.

Yes I am only an idiot when I attack your beloved Trinidad. By you attacking other boxers, in your opinion you are just stating facts. Hopkins exposed Trinidad for this illegality, but I am an idiot.
Tyson'scolon 12-15-2004, 11:12 AM Vargas is fat and has brain damage.
Boxerdog 12-15-2004, 11:13 AM Vargas will never learn to just shut up and box.
If he insists on his ill-advised comeback, he is going to be hit SO hard and SO often by SO many guys, he won't be able to keep track.
bigdlb12 12-15-2004, 11:14 AM anybody can see that Trinidad hit harder than DLH, even most of the boxers out there right now dont even come close
abdiel2k3 12-15-2004, 11:17 AM god

jabsRstiff 12-15-2004, 11:27 AM Vargas has always resembled "Sluggo" from the "Nancy" comic strip.
He has two holes in his head.....with no eyeballs.

He'll never be as good as he was back at the turn of the Millenium.
He's been physically & mentally damaged.
pinaldino 12-15-2004, 12:03 PM He was hit harder by Trinidad because Trinidad tapes his hand's illegally.
If you were right it would be noticeable now that Tito wrapem'up differently...and Vargas should definitely shut up cause DLH gave him a true boxing lesson, and also hit him much harder than he wants to admit IMO. it's not only Vargas getting tired and caught by a good shot!
Boxerdog 12-15-2004, 12:10 PM Trinidad Sr. has been asked by other camps to demonstrate his method of wrapping. It IS different. It's NOT illegal.
Here's another point:
If Trinidad, hits "100 times harder" as Sterocious says, what does that say about his ability to take a punch? Sounds to me like a veritable wuss knocked your ass OUT, 'nando!
PacKillsMorales 12-15-2004, 12:13 PM vargas has heart and skills but his chin lets him down.
not a glass chin but not good either.
hope he comes back..makes the divisions even more exciting

I don't feel like explaining it anymore.
elveiel 12-15-2004, 01:35 PM He was hit harder by Trinidad because Trinidad tapes his hand's illegally.
I havent tried to wrap my hand that way so i dont know if it is effective or not!! If it is, some sparring parnters going to get a beating!! :D
Vargas would say Tito's punches are x100 harder because he hate DLH!! I have no doubt he does punch harder but x100!?
jack_the_rippuh 12-15-2004, 01:45 PM Well, it's too late for Vargas now, Winky doesn't want him anymore. His sights are on Tito Triniidad, but to reject $3 Million, probably the most amount of money he'll be offered in his career, is foolish. Maybe he thinks he's Hopkins..
Xecutioner 12-15-2004, 02:15 PM why are we discussing trash talking articles from 02?? lol everyone already knows tito is a bigger puncher than dlh, so i dont know whats the point of bringing this out of the dead
Tha Greatest 12-15-2004, 02:21 PM tito is a stronger puncher then dlh
but not 100x stronger
vargas needs to grow up n he might get some respect
paulmmv 12-15-2004, 02:37 PM vargas is a great fighter and i would love to see him come back into boxing
marvdave 12-15-2004, 04:26 PM Vargas is one of my least favorite boxers of all time. A punk, a ganster and a big mouth that he can't back up. I wonder why he thinks he still matters? Nobody in Boxing cares about Vargas. DeLaHoya will never give him a rematch becuase of the crap he pulled before the first fight. Trinidad has no reason to fight him..already destroyed him once. Wright might have lost a decision to Vargas 5 years ago, but Winky won the fight in my opinion and is much improved now. Wright is looking for big name opponents, not has been/never were guys. At one time, Vargas definitely showed potential, but I think his lack of intelligence and weak chin destroyed any hope. Maybe he should turn the page and move on...most everyone else has already turned the page on his career.
Maybe he could take up golf, I hear he and his "posse" can swing a mean three wood. :D
Tha Greatest 12-15-2004, 04:29 PM that was good i agree wit u

Vargas is full of **** and he has done nothing to deserve a rematch.
Fact is he talked all kind of **** for years to get that DLH fight and when he finally got he got KO'ed like a *****.

How is that possible?
I thought the ref would check each fighters prior to putting the gloves on.

AintGottaClue 03-29-2005, 07:23 PM btw how do u wrap illegaly in the first place imo?
Vargas is fat and has brain damage.
That "jesus avatar" is the most retarded piece of art I have ever seen. Did you make that with Microsoft Paint? oh my. In coalition with your 1 line bits of wisdom, you are a formidable internet boxing forum opponent.
Slipx 03-29-2005, 08:01 PM I'd like to see Vargas fight David Estrada...Estrada would rip him a new one..

I'd like a link to the story about B-Hop and Bouie saying it was to keep him from warming up, etc.
Truth 03-29-2005, 08:54 PM I don't believe the Tito hand wrap theroy...
btw how do u wrap illegaly in the first place imo?
moisture, and certain packing techniques can create a 'harder' wrapping, similar to plaster.
don't know what the beef was with Tito though?
if u notice that interview is from 2002
