View Full Version : Would Tszyu Still Have Beaten Chavez In His Prime?
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 08:43 PM Everyone knows that Tsyzu is a great fighter. And without question Chavez was one of the greatest fighters of all time. Tsyzu defeated Chavez in devestating fashion with a TKO, but that was an old, overhill, past his prime Chavez. What would have happened and who would have won if Tszyu fought Chavez when Chavez was in his prime. Your thoughts. :)

Zoo wouldve got KTFO. That's what wouldve happened. Did u see what a strong and powerful Phillips did to him. Chaves would kill him.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 12-14-2004, 08:56 PM Nope Tszyu wouldnt have been able to beat Chavez in his prime.
Chavez in his prime was a very damaging yet technically sound fighter with too many talents for tsyu.
I think Chavez would win a by TKO much in the fashion of Chavez vs Rosario.
methman 12-14-2004, 09:03 PM Though Kosta is a great, great fighter; I don't really don't believe he could hang in there with a J.C. Chavez. Chavez was known for chopping an opponent down into the late rounds. Then he could just finish him off at will. Plus, Chavez could take a hell of a punch!!!
jack_the_rippuh 12-14-2004, 09:37 PM I bet De La Hoya from back in the 147 days could have beat a prime Chavez. Even if it was held at 140.

for real?????????
Sir_Jose 12-14-2004, 10:50 PM The way to beat a young Chavez was to get on your toes and move not stand in front of him like Tszyu would do. I think it would be an all time great fight with Chavez wearing him down and stopping him late.
I would also pick DLH to beat Chavez, he's just too big too strong and too fast
TheGreat1 12-14-2004, 10:55 PM nobody beats chavez in his prime, not the 90 staight people he beat or anyone else. JCC was great.
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 10:58 PM nobody beats chavez in his prime, not the 90 staight people he beat or anyone else. JCC was great.
without question. that goes without saying. :)

Hehe that didnt work for Roger Mayweather, twice.
BTW i pick Chavez to win against DLH at 140. In the rematch against DLH chavez was old had nothing left and still managed to land solidly repeatedly on DLH's face inflating his eye.

well it goes without saying you actually have to have the talent to pull it off
jack_the_rippuh 12-14-2004, 11:07 PM Yeah, but Roger Mayweather is a natural puncher. He was more use to depending on that verses his punching skills..

yeah its not really accurate either when people talk about how DeLahoya beat Chavez. Because Chavez was old and WAY past his prime when Oscar beat him.
Chaves wouldve killed Oscar
QueenCity 12-14-2004, 11:58 PM IMO Tszyu would have gotten it handed to him-- I can't see a young De La Hoya beating a prime Chavez either.
PRboxingfan 12-15-2004, 01:09 AM A prime JCC would beat a prime ANYONE below 140 and many prime 147 fighters. He was old and wore down when F. Randall beat him the first time. Chavez (although losing to Taylor) was only susceptible to being boxed and anyone who stuck around too long was going to get wore down.
scramwarrior 12-15-2004, 01:12 AM Yep I think he would.

Do you mean today's fighters or all time, because theirs noway that he would ever be able to handel Sweet Pea
moochi 12-15-2004, 04:05 AM i think it would have been the same story with tszyu triumphing.....sometimes opponents bring the best out of you, and chavez would have done this.
dodge 12-15-2004, 04:51 AM Zoo Gets ktfo'd if he fought JCC in his prime.
THRILLAinmanila 12-15-2004, 04:56 AM Zoo Gets ktfo'd if he fought JCC in his prime.
Amen to that dodge ;)
liams_parka 12-15-2004, 05:55 AM Chavez was undoubtedly one of the finest fighters of his time and although the same could be said about Tszyu now. Chavez was something extra special. just a pity the clash between the two didn't happen a few years earlier.
jabsRstiff 12-15-2004, 07:04 AM Chavez would prevail, in an amazing fight.
I'm one of Chavez's biggest fans.....& I think Tszyu would give him a tremendous fight, but come up short.

I agree 100%. It would have been a pretty brutal fight.
Mr. Violence 12-15-2004, 01:11 PM when i watch old tapes of chavez in his prime he looks very close to invincible, not sure of anyone could take his devestating body attack.
jack_the_rippuh 12-15-2004, 01:23 PM What was the first fight that showed Chavez's aging?
Xecutioner 12-15-2004, 02:11 PM hmm, zoo is a natural at 140. i think that must also be considered, huge puncher. much bigger punch than chavez has at 140. solid chin. i think chavez is technically better. tough pick . chavez is made out of granite though, and was never tkoed in his prime like zoo was.
TheGreat1 12-16-2004, 02:35 PM What was the first fight that showed Chavez's aging?
Sweet pea was the 1st
PRboxingfan 12-17-2004, 10:10 AM Do you mean today's fighters or all time, because theirs noway that he would ever be able to handel Sweet Pea
He did handle Sweet Pea, they fought to a draw when they were both in their prime (1993, I believe). I never saw the fight but I remember hearing about it from my dad. He thought Chavez actually got robbed and my dad never liked him (mexican puerto rican thing, I guess). Meldrick Taylor was the only fighter that was really beating Chavez and were it not for the untimely stop (which made Richard Steele famous) then Chavez would've lost. After that he went on to win like 25 fights and one draw (Sweet Pea). He would've beat Randall were he not penalized two points for low blows.
JCC was, in my opinion, the best Lightweight and Jr. Welterweight ever in his prime.
jabsRstiff 12-17-2004, 11:05 AM Not too many people were as big a fan of Julio Cesar Chavez as myself.
Let me tell you, & it hurts to say so, Julio Cesar Chavez barely won a single round aginst Whitaker.
Anyone who thinks otherwise can't handle the truth, or has no clue as to how boxing is scored.
marvdave 12-17-2004, 11:32 AM Chavez was a destroyer. His thudding body attack was incredible. His punches had a different sound to them. I think KT would have been competitive with Chavez, but JCC would wear him out and probably get the TKO late( around 8-10 rounds) I also feel the ganite chin of Chavez could have taken KT's shots. As far as Chavez v Whitiker goes, highway robbery. Whitiker won easy. That Chavez was not prime. It was above his natural weight class and he was past his "prime"

i see your point but do you think chavez was in his prime when he loss to whitaker?
BDBowe 12-17-2004, 06:07 PM na man. julio in his day was bad bad news. i dont think tyszu would stand a chance
BDBowe 12-17-2004, 06:07 PM i think chavez would outwork and outhustle tsyzu and give him a tough boxing lesson and maybe a possible ko
ryankivell 04-11-2005, 12:16 PM Chavez by knockout in 3. Tszyu is a great fighter and probably hall-of-fame material, but Chavez is a legend. If anyone saw the Chavez-Meldrick Taylor fight, they would know what I mean.
adrsan84 04-11-2005, 12:36 PM Sweet Pea waited for Chavez to get old, and that was the right thing to do for him. By the time they fought Chavez was too slow to catch pernell. He saw what Chavez did to Taylor but by the time he fought Macho Camacho he wasn't able to hurt Macho as much because he was older(though he completely whooped his ass). Then Whitaker fought him and admittedly outboxed him. Not to take any credit from Whitaker who I say is one of the greatest of recent fighters, but i think had the fight happened a few years later Chavez TKO's him late.
jack_the_rippuh 04-11-2005, 12:41 PM How old is this thread?
TheGreat1 04-12-2005, 04:09 AM This is one of the better threads. JCC was the man, i'm glad to see he received his props
THRILLAinmanila 04-12-2005, 04:13 AM JCC has the overall advantage in skill and power. Kostya would not be able to beat a prime JCC
