View Full Version : Who Is/Was The Greatest Guitarist Of All Time?
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 08:35 PM With the recent tragic death of guitarist Dimebag Darrell, this got me thinking. Who is the greatest guitarist of all time? All music genres. Your opinions. Peace. :D
this thread is also dedicated to the memory of dimebag darrel so if you want to talk about him and his music, feel free to do so :D
Fat Shamz 12-14-2004, 09:44 PM this thread has already been up before.

ha ha...peace be with you too. anyway I still gotta go with hendrix. even though i'm not a huge metal fan, i still recognise the talents of dimebag darrel. he was a great guitarist. it was a huge tragedy what happened to him. it affected all music genres no matter if its metal or not. because now artists must watch their ass on stage. this thread is for dimebag. peace.
Chups 12-14-2004, 10:15 PM Who else but Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 10:18 PM Who else but Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton is great too no doubt about it. :D
JaNnO 12-14-2004, 10:19 PM Who else but Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix
jimi hendrix, clapton, van halen, & axl rose...
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 10:22 PM jimi hendrix, clapton, van halen, & axl rose...
yes eddie van halen is another innovator no doubt about that too. havent seen him in a while though
Boxerdog 12-14-2004, 10:22 PM Yep, Axl is on everybody's list!
Sir_Jose 12-14-2004, 10:27 PM Its Hendrix and its not up for debate...it really isn't
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 10:27 PM Yep, Axl is on everybody's list!
I'm sure he meant slash. but thats cool. slash is good too.
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 10:30 PM Its Hendrix and its not up for debate...it really isn't
i hear you my brother. there are times when hendrix guitar playing sent my mind to another universe. he was truly a magical soul. a genius. a benefit to humanity.
JaNnO 12-14-2004, 10:53 PM I'm sure he meant slash. but thats cool. slash is good too.
thanks for the correction bro...yup i meant slash of guns & roses!
JaNnO 12-14-2004, 10:54 PM what do you guys thiank think of johny lang...did i have the correct spelling of his last name? is he any good?
Boxerdog 12-14-2004, 10:59 PM thanks for the correction bro...yup i meant slash of guns & roses!
The Slash of today with Velvet Revolver is much better than the Slash that played with G&R. He has learned some of the nuances of the instrument. I still would not put him on a goat list though.
Jonny Lang is strictly a blues guitarist...a pretty good one but still a guy that plays 1-4-5 tunes 99% of the time.
Mr. Violence 12-14-2004, 11:02 PM what do you guys thiank think of johny lang...did i have the correct spelling of his last name? is he any good?
he's alright. probably not one of the great ones yet though. but he's still young, we'll see what happens.
JaNnO 12-14-2004, 11:56 PM off topic: i bought an acoustic a long time ago buy haven't got a time to use it. i'm planning to learn to play guitar on my own...any useful tips? thanks!
dingus 12-15-2004, 12:02 AM Wow. Not even a mention of Stevie Ray Vaughn, who was argueably the best guitarist since Hendrix.
Mr. Violence 12-15-2004, 12:04 AM off topic: i bought an acoustic a long time ago buy haven't got a time to use it. i'm planning to learn to play guitar on my own...any useful tips? thanks!
when i started i learned by just trying to play back what i heard on the cds. i would listen to a lick or chord and try to pick out each one of those notes on guitar. it is slow and tedious at first. but the more you do it the better you get at it and before you know you can pick up any song by ear. but it takes practice and patience. another thing you can do is buy music books of your favorite artist with what is called 'tablature'....you dont have to know how to read music...tablature will tell you the fret number of what note has to be played in a song...look up tablature on the internet you'll see what I'm talking about....it's kind of hard to explain...anyway homes i'm calling it a night...it's getting late...later
Raekwon 12-15-2004, 02:50 AM Its Hendrix and its not up for debate...it really isn't
i agree 100%
1. Hendrix
2. Clapton
3. Knopfler
urdaddyinAZ 12-15-2004, 08:44 AM Once again everybody fails to mention an all time classic guitarist in Carlos Santana.....the guy has been putting out classic guitar riffs for almost 40 years. There has got to be something said about that.
Boxerdog 12-15-2004, 10:56 AM Can't figure out why Carlos has been so overlooked in both of these recent threads. He is obviously top ten and probably top three.

Boxer...you're the only person that I need confirmation from...you know your **** in regards to music!
Atwa_66 12-15-2004, 11:07 AM Randy Rhoads, Tony Iommi, or Jimmy Page
Mr. Violence 12-15-2004, 01:08 PM Boxer...you're the only person that I need confirmation from...you know your **** in regards to music!
Carlos aint being overlooked you two have given him props and so am I. Carlos without question is one the greatest of all time. He's a gift to the music world and to humanity. Enjoy those Santana records my brothers. :D
liams_parka 12-15-2004, 02:45 PM my vote goes to jimmy page. hendrix had the greatest guitar skills, but page was the guitarist who combined skills with songwriting, and fused them in a band setting.
JaNnO 12-15-2004, 02:53 PM Boxer...you're the only person that I need confirmation from...you know your **** in regards to music!
then you could just have pm the guy instead
Boxerdog 12-15-2004, 03:12 PM Nothing wrong with giving a poster props in public is there?
Set us straight if we're wrong here, Jane!

that's all kewl dude...the last phrase was fine... but the first one wasn't very tactful to other people who posted in here but are not the so-called "music experts". :)
Dr.Depravity 12-15-2004, 09:32 PM Billy Gibbons, Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitarist. ;)
dodge 12-15-2004, 09:43 PM Hendrix was pobally the best. Then theres Gilmore, Page, Santana, Clapton, Eddie van Halen and Tom morello from Rage.

Dodge, this list is fine, untill you get to the end. Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine? I cant agree to that.

morello does some neat things like making his guitar sound like a dj scratchin. you gotta hear him do it,it's pretty dope. not saying he is one of the greats, but he is original :)
kadyo 12-16-2004, 12:08 AM Jimmy Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Carlo Santana
Jimmy Paige
George Harrison
Jeff Beck
Wally Gonsalez

Can't you do that with a set of Black Diamond round wound strings and the side of your pick??
Not exactly earth shaking innovation.
TheFairPole 12-16-2004, 09:05 AM Many of the guitarists listed in this thread are the most popular, but that doesn't make them the best! Timing is very important in music and that is why so many pick Hendrix as the best. He was the inovater of the guitar but many guitarists have bettered him by a lot!
Here is my list:
Randy Rhoads- Died before he could make his mark and still did! He would have been Recognized like Eddy Van Halen is now!!!
Steve Vai- Amazing skills
Joe Satriani- Taught Vai, so he is super amazing but I like Vai better.
Eric Johnson- Super technical skils with bluesy influence.
Marty Friedman- Very underrated and awesome player almost all guitar mags have learning techniques by him for good reason!
Slash- Technically not too great but he comes up with some awesome stuff. His stuff with Velvet Revolver just doesn't have that magic like it did with Guns N' Roses! He seems to have lost his creativeness after his first Snakepit album!
Yngwie Malmsteen- Probably the fastest and technically best player ever.
Eddy Van Halen- For obvious reasons.
Vito Bratta- He wasn't in a great band, but try playing some of his stuff. It is some of the hardest stuff i've ever tried to play!
Jason Becker- In my humble and honest opinion, this guy is or was the best guitarist ever. He was diagnosed with A.L.S. and cannot play anymore. He would have been considered atleast an alltime great by many!!! Checkout his stuff if you can. His music will move you for sure!!!
Dimebag Darrel- The most original guitarist since Eddie Van Halen! Great technical skills and great bluesy feel! He had it all on the guitar but mostly chose the aggression side of music! Too bad he never did an instrumental album!
Boxerdog 12-16-2004, 11:35 AM Oh come ON!! Dimebag would never in a million years have been mentioned here had he not had his brains blown out.
You know that I ain't lieing!

actually dimebag had been getting props and accolades from the guitar playing community since the early nineties. he was on covers of all the top guitar magazines hundreds of times and won numerous awards including being nominated for a grammy. different strokes for different folks, i guess. its obvious he's not your style, but it's a free country. :)

Nice list man. Ever heard of a guy who played the geetar by the name of Durango Reighnhartd. I'm sure I spelled his name wrong.
dodge 12-16-2004, 01:28 PM anyway that guy kicks on guitar. It's all old **** from like the 40's or somthing.
Did we mention Zack Wilde?
Mr. Violence 12-16-2004, 01:30 PM yes django reinhardt the great gypsy jazz guitarist. the man was missing two fingers on his fret hand from an accident from a fire but but could do more with that messed up hand then most could do with all 5 fingers. when you hear his records you cant even tell he was missing fingers in fact he sounded amazing.
Boxerdog 12-16-2004, 01:31 PM actually dimebag had been getting props and accolades from the guitar playing community since the early nineties. he was on covers of all the top guitar magazines hundreds of times and won numerous awards including being nominated for a grammy. different strokes for different folks, i guess. its obvious he's not your style, but it's a free country. :)
Funny that he wasn't mentioned on the previous thread on this same topic. Or ANY other thread that I have EVER read on the subject.

oh well i guess the writers didnt feel like writing about him at the time. i have stacks of guitar mags with dimbag on the cover and also winning awards for best metal guitarist from guitar one magazine so he has been getting props. maybe not from the mainstream but the guitar playin community recognized him. like i said youre entitled to your opinion. :D

tracylee 12-16-2004, 01:40 PM I'm assuming it's ok to list several (cause I'm gonna do it anyway :p ). Okay, Hendrix was the best, hands down. But, after him, and not in this exact order, I love(d)...Angus Young, Erik Clapton, Kurt Cobane, Yngwie Malmsteen, James Hetfeild, and so many more that I cant bring them all to mind! :o Rock is and always has been my favorite, and the guitar is my single most favorite instrument..so that list can go on forever!

good point tracylee..lets not forget the boys from metallica. kirk hammet and the mighty james hetfield helped revolutionize modern electric guitar.
tracylee 12-16-2004, 01:46 PM good point tracylee..lets not forget the boys from metallica. kirk hammet and the mighty james hetfield helped revolutionize modern electric guitar.
Definately loved both of them, but always preferred Hetfield's ...something about the sound of his just get's to me in certain songs...Sanitarium, Fade to Black, etc...good stuff!
dodge 12-16-2004, 01:48 PM High pitched Eric says, "Spit in my face daddy". Yea kurt Cobain was bad ass. Pisses me off that he killed himself.

i agree. james hetfield plays the slower melodic solos. kirk hammet plays the faster crazy solos. i prefer james' solos better because they have more feeling then kirk's. like the guitar solo from ,nothing else matters, for example
tracylee 12-16-2004, 01:51 PM High pitched Eric says, "Spit in my face daddy". Yea kurt Cobain was bad ass. Pisses me off that he killed himself.
He didnt! Man, dont even get me started on that one. I've gotta log off soon so there's just not time to point out all the evidence that points toward his *****, whore, slut wife! I'll settle for this one fact though; he had so much heroine in his system when they found him that he probably would have Overdosed if he hadnt been shot...how the hell's he gonna shoot himself in the head when he's in that shape?? Just one of many "hmmmm's"...
Boxerdog 12-16-2004, 01:51 PM I AM glad to see that this version of the list isn't limited to rock guitarists. There have been great players and more importantly INNOVATORS from other fields. Andres Segovia, Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Maybelle Carter, B.B. King.......these and others stretched the boundaries.
Some classic rock cats have still been omitted and I was hoping to see some of the self-styled experts mention them but it hasn't happened.
How about Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, James Burton, Lonnie Mack, Duane Allman and Dick Dale just to name a few.

all just a little before my time babe! Now I'm familiar with chuck Berry, of course (blueberry hill was his, right??) but honestly he's the only one on that list that I'm familiar with :o The oldies but goodies...thats one reason we need B-dog around...to remind us that it started long before any of 'our fav's'' ;)

chuck berry without a doubt belongs in here. without him rock itself probably wouldn't have even got off the ground. and yes mr. duanne allman too bad he died because had he lived he would have surely been mentioned alongside clapton and hendrix,,,wasted potential. in the jazz category there are other monsters like George Benson(before he went Pop with "On Broadway") and another cat by the name of Pat Martino who does some crazy ****.
