Ali was faster, quicker, and had a better chin than Holmes.

I'll give you the quicker part, but I don't think he had a better chin. Holmes got up from maybe the hardest punch ever thrown by the hardest overall puncher the sports ever seen in his second fight with Shavers...they were equal in that department.

Holmes was a more technically sound fighter than Ali and his jab would have given Ali a lot of problems. The handspeed edge goes to Ali, and I think his ability to land first might help him eek out the close 15 round decision over a prime Holmes.

If anyone could have ever given prime Ali the fight of his life or could have beaten him it was prime Holmes.

Thats heart, not chin. Ali was hit by the hardest left hook in history by "Smokin" Joe Frazier in their first fight, and he got up from that anyway, so that equals out your arguement.

Holmes had trouble with boxers too. Carl Williams took him all the way and Holmes could barly win a decision over Williams, he lost two disputed fights to Micheal Spinks (he won the second one IMO) he had a lot of trouble with Tim Witherspoon and a past prime Ken Norton almost beat him. A prime Ali was a huge step above these fighters.

Ali in a close fight.

Larry Holmes would win this thing.

are you being serious right now??
a prime ali is too quick and too smart for the overrated larry holmes

Larry Holmes would have given Muhammad Ali hell, but because Ali had more speed he would beat Holmes to the punch enough to secure a safe decision.

I'm not a "purist".....generally the thought of two fighters like Holmes & Ali squaring off sounds like a non-fight.

But.....this fight would be fascinating.

Two of history's best boxers, best jabbers...dueling it out. Two guys who could be bothered by others who managed to jab back with them.
Two guys who I seriously doubt could KO each other. They'd give each other fits, however.

I'd pick Ali (I'd root for Holmes) based on the belief that Ali would be the one who dictated things more in there. I think he'd get Holmes to break out of boxing & come to Ali....more often than the reverse.

Larry was Ali's sparring parter for awhile. I heard that Larry was bragging that he was beating up on Ali, then Ali heard about it. Ali came in and beat Larry till he begged for mercy. Holmes was awsome with a very strong jab, stronger than Ali's. Ali had quicker hands, quicker feet, and a quicker mind though. Ali by late KO or UD

Holmes has a better chin than Ali?Shavers knocked a prime Holmes down. The same Shavers could not knock down a washed up past his prime Ali.Ali chin has way better chin than Holmes.Holmes struggled to beat a faded Norton.Ali is to fast to strong to talented to lose to Holmes.

actully, that person was joe fraizer. his style, similar to ken norton's (the crablike defense) posed more problems for ali that larry holmes ever could

Ali by decision easy I dont see Holmes knocking Ali out and I dont see Ali knocking him out and to be honest I dont see much of a crazy all out fight more slow and boxing.

Yeah Ali has the better chin, but you got to remember, that was a SEMI TRUCK OF A PUNCH!!! I would say that must have been the hardest shot that Homles had ever taken! And he still got up!

that's impossible. ali is superior to holmes in every aspect. speed, chin, physical strength, and smarts. no way holmes would beat ali.

Ali would win this, but it would be extremely messy. Ali had the better stamina, the better handspeed and the BETTER HEART and ability to absorb punishment. In his younger days he never knew how to block a jab but his speed, ability to move fluidly would allow him to lean back from the waist to evade or simply move away. He would have to stick and move, in the latter rounds when holmes begins to fade bursting in with flurries of punches.

Ali by late KO or UDYep..Ali IN HIS PRIME would have made quick work of Larry. He would have busted him up and not get hit doing it. About the only time I really liked Tyson was when he Ko ed Larry. The camera swung to Ali right after the KO. A sickly looking Ali looked very pleased. Over the years I have come to respect Holmes but think he was overrated. Ask Michael Spinks or Ken Norton. Anyway, Ali in his absolute prime,no-one could have beat him.
