One of the United States' most popular television news anchors, Peter Jennings of ABC News, has died of lung cancer at the age of 67.

Mr. Jennings' family says he passed away peacefully late Sunday at his home in New York.

In April, Mr. Jennings went on the air one last time to announce he had lung cancer, but continued to work behind the scenes.

A reporter, broadcaster and foreign correspondent, Mr. Jennings became the sole anchor of ABC television's nightly news in 1983, nearly 20 years after joining the network. He opened ABC's bureau in Beirut in 1968, and was later seen broadcasting from London as one of the network's main anchors.

Mr. Jennings covered virtually every international event in the past 40 years, and earned a number of major broadcast awards. His wide global knowledge enabled him to explain complex issues to his American audience.

A native of Toronto, Mr. Jennings left high school to start a career in broadcasting at an Ottawa radio station, but soon moved into television. He became an American citizen two years ago.

One legendary news anchor (Rather) retires, and another one dies.
Rest in peace to Peter Jennings.
Show some respect, mother****ers.

Like the article says Jennings used to do the local news here in Ottawa. The guy they have on the same station now is the more useless mother****er on Earth. Not that anyone else cares, but I just thought I'd mention that.

Jennings was my favorite of the primetime anchors. He was a stand up guy and he really really really was what class journalism was about.

I saw that last night. It's really too bad. Appearantly he never even finished high school.

...I didn't agree with his stance on some things but I didn't want to see the guy dead. He seemed to young to die. Must have been a hardcore smoker at one time. RIP

Im not just saying this cause he died, but he was the best along with Brokaw. Dont care too much about Dan Rather.

The thing is, Jennings dropped out of high school and doesnt have a college degree and has come this far. Kudos to him and his legacy.

They said he picked up smoking after 9/11 and that was the nail in the coffin so to speak. Because he already quit smoking for years.
