View Full Version : Roberto Duran ---> Erik Morales
!! Mr. Soprano 07-20-2005, 01:50 AM Today I watched Duran Vs. Kobayashi on ESPN Classics, where Duran is fighting at lightweight I believe. Even though the fight was recorded in B&W and the quality is horrible, Duran's warrior style looked a lot like Morales..
What do you think?

Duran and Morales fight in two different styles, Duran is a swarmer who puts constant pressure where Morales is a stand up boxer/puncher types.
But yes both are very serious warriors who are all time greats.
oldgringo 07-20-2005, 02:05 AM As jose said they have different styles, but both were greats. Duran was a boxer/swarmer and Morales is more of a boxer/puncher. Duran's defense was very underrated though.
Both guys have the warrior mentality and both guys could be argued as being the best ever in a particular division. Duran was a freak at 135 and Morales was a monster at 122. Both all-time greats.
However Morales is nowhere near the level of Duran. Some think Duran was the perfect fighting machine. Morales is good but not Duran good
!! Mr. Soprano 07-20-2005, 02:25 AM Maybe they don't have the same fighting technique, but what I meant by warrior styles is that mentality of going forward.. willing to take a punch to land some.. willing to stand and trade..

I agree with you. I do however think that Erik's greatness and what he's doing right now is being overlooked by a lot of people.
He's going to become the first Mexican fighter to win a world title in 4 weight divisions and he's one of the rare guys who seeks out the hard fights all of the time. He went from Chavez to Hernandez to Barrera to Pacquiao...thats insane. It's possible that he may not be a 4 div champ but theres a very good chance he'll do it.
He's also probably one of the 3 greatest 122 pounders ever, and could be argued as #1 or 2 alongside Bazooka Gomez. 36-0 at 122 and great natural skills.
Zab Super Judah 07-20-2005, 02:33 AM i think morales style is differnet from durans..castillo is more simliar to duran then morales is
The Teacher 07-20-2005, 02:43 AM Maybe they don't have the same fighting technique, but what I meant by warrior styles is that mentality of going forward.. willing to take a punch to land some.. willing to stand and trade..

TheEvilSaint 07-20-2005, 08:05 AM i can see ur point in comparing morales to duran. but u will never hear morales say "no mas".
The Devil: shut it down, pack up, and go the **** away.
SnoopySmurf 07-20-2005, 08:20 AM Lots of fighters in past have been "warriors" in that they are willing to take several punches to land a punch.
Duran was also beating his opponents before the fight started. I recall as a kid how Duran would stare at his opponents during press conferences and such. Scared me to death.
Oldgringo mentioned Duran's under rated defense. That is true. He rolls with his punches very quickly. If you watch his fight with Iran Barkley, he looks like he got hit with some wicked shots but he snapped his own head back to lessen the impact. Those were the same punches that KO'd Thomas Hearns, mind you.
As for the No Mas fight in the Duran/Leonard II, I dunno. I almost cried in that fight. I never really knew as a kid, I was depending on sports news to get answers and never got one. But a few months ago I read that Duran some diarrhea? I dunno if that's true. So he could keep standing there till his crapped in his pants or just leave. But even now, I doubt Duran could have beaten the prancing Leonard. ray was too fast and wise not to go toe to toe with Duran.
oldgringo 07-20-2005, 10:16 AM Well, if you do look at best supper featherweight of all times on Boxrec.com they rate him as #1 :D
Haha that's laughable. They also rated Trinidad as the best Welterweight ever so I'll trust that sites rankings about as far as I can throw em.
A case can be made for Morales at super bantam definitely, but I don't know about anywhere else.

Sorry Gringo,
I see Felix Trinidad as #18 in the Middleweights.
Parodius 07-20-2005, 11:30 AM Morales chin is better then Duran. Duran was knockdown too many times, Duran was also KO. When Morales retires he will be ahead of Duran. If they ever fought, it would've been a classic brawl. It will be a hard fight to pick.

I don't think ANYONE can avoid being KDed if they had 100+ fights with like 2 month interval between majority of them
Parodius 07-20-2005, 12:05 PM And Duran fought like every 2 month...
I don't think ANYONE can avoid being KDed if they had 100+ fights with like 2 month interval between majority of themYea but Duran was down in his prime.
SnoopySmurf 07-20-2005, 12:51 PM I seriously doubt Morales could stay awake after getting clocked by a prime Thomas Hearns.
!! Mr. Soprano 07-20-2005, 01:06 PM Yea but Duran was down in his prime.
and in his prime he fought every 2 month
SnoopySmurf 07-20-2005, 09:21 PM So, what's Morales up to? Is he gonna venture into 135 and follow the footsteps of Duran or not? Or is this schedule with Pacman at 130 in December written in stone?

He's scheduled for a fight at 130 with Zahir Raheem in September. I think he's going to rematch with Pacquiao in december or early '06 depending on what happens in that bout.
There was talk about him moving up to 135 and facing Levander Johnson, the new IBF champ, but I don't think he's moving up until at least March of next year.
