View Full Version : Do you think Tiger Woods would surpass Nicklaus' 18 major championships?
chito 07-17-2005, 08:46 PM Tiger Woods won again and is looking very good. He hit 66, 67, 71, & finally 70 to win that very prestigious British Open title. With the way he's been playing now, do you think he can beat Nicklaus' 18 major titles? I think he can. He's just 29 years old and if He remains playing superb golf, I don't think that would be a very difficult task to accomplish. Tiger Woods is very capable of accomplishing that.
I will be rooting for him and he may be the only person for the next 1000 years who actually has a shot at it...
he still has a long way to go but it appears whenever the British Open is played at St. Andrews he will be the winner.

he's a long shot hitter, that's why. they say it was tailor-made for him and it showed really he knows the course too damn well!
oldgringo 07-17-2005, 11:45 PM Tiger is going to shatter Jacks record. He'll also go down as the greatest golfer ever, and maybe the most dominant athlete of all-time (even though I don't consider golf to be much a sport...more of a game).

Whatchu talkin bout Willis? I agree that golf isn't really a sport, but there are a lot of people that disagree. There are also a lot of people who don't consider cycling a sport...using the argument that ANYONE could ride a bike...and that it requires 0 skill, just endurance. Dumb argument yes, but argument nonetheless.
If in fact Golf IS considered a sport by the general public (which it is) then that would make Tiger Woods an ATHLETE. My opinion and your opinion aren't really any better than the millions of people who do consider it a sport. I think it's a game but whatever.
Anyway, Tiger has his whole career out in front of him and has 10 majors won at 29 years old. He'll be at 16-20 majors by the time he's 40 and well into 20 majors by the time he's 50.
Of those three guys you named, only 1 is considered to be the best athlete ever in their sport and that's Lance Armstrong. The way Golf is going, nobody is going to be ****in with Tigers records ANYTIME soon because of the elongated courses and depth in the field.
Russell played on a dominant team and his 11 rings are not to be ****ed with, but are you going to tell me that he was a more dominating PLAYER than Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Neal? I have your answer...hell no. As much as I love Bill, he played a game that was completely different than it is now, and wouldn't be ****ting on everybody in todays game. When you look at a Jordan, or a Ray Robinson, or a Tiger Woods though...they definitely would.
If you wanted to throw out names you should have given me Jordan, Gretzky, Rice etc...c'mon you gotta come harder than that.

I dont know one person who thinks Gold is a sport. Golf is what rich athletes and old white men do to relax.
Cycling and Golf are two different things. Saying its just riding a bike is like saying boxing is just punching someone in the face. Riding thousand of miles and up the Alps is a hell of a feat.
You said "Dominate" all those guys were Dominate
Bill Russell
Olympic Gold Medal
2 NCAA Championships
11 NBA Championship
Joe Louis
Heavyweight Champion for 12 years
25 Tittle defenses
I would say thats pretty dominate.
Your right I did forget about Gretzky throw him onto the list of guys greater than Eldrick.

Meh...
Your argument is fueled by the fact that you don't think Golf is a sport. Neither Russell nor Joe Louis were the most dominant individual athletes in their respective sport. If Louis is the most dominant, then I guess that puts Hopkins/Dariusz Michalczewski/Ricardo Lopez/Rocky Marciano are all up there too huh?
Most dominant athletes should be reserved for the best individual athlete in their sport. Jordan in basketball, Ray Robinson in boxing, Rice in football (at WR at least), Gretzky in Hockey, Pele in Soccer, Armstrong in Cycling, Woods in Golf (soon to be).
I know plenty of people who think Golf is a sport, and while I don't, I realize that it's pretty much recognized as a sport.

Like I said Dominate and best are two differebnt things. You daid "Dominate" we have never seen anyone domiante there sports like Joe Louis or Bill Russell.
As great as Jordan was he dont have 11 rings and nobody has made more title defenses than Joe Louis.

Get outta here wit that ****...you're honestly saying that Russell was a more dominant individual player than Jordan? Pure comedy...

In his era YES
Bill Russell
Olympic Gold Medal
2 NCAA CHampionships
11 Championship Rings
Micheal Jordan
Olympic Gold Medal
1 NCAA Championship
6 Championship Rings
NiGe2011 07-18-2005, 01:54 AM To answer the question in the thread-- yes Tiger is going to catch and pass Jack. Although, if he did not go into the occasional lapses he would probably lap the Golden Bear, haha.

You got jokes...
We're talking about individual athletes here mayne, not who had the most dominant team.
Michael Jordan (individual records of dominance):
5 time MVP
Ten time all NBA first team selection
Six time NBA Finals MVP
Nine time all NBA defensive first team
Best scoring average ever - 31.0 ppg
Second in steals
Most seasons leading the league in scoring - 10
Most consecutive games in double digits - 842
I would keep going but there are way too ****in many to keep going. Again, Russell was a dominating player in his era, but he wasn't the only one. Wilt Chamberlain holds about as much weight as Russell.
There is a reason that there is an era of basketball called the MICHAEL JORDAN ERA. He screwed more all-time great players out of championships than anyone else. Ewing, Malone, Payton, Stockton, etc...
I can't even believe you're arguing this. Jordan = basketball dominance defined.

I really dont want to hear all that noise about all NBA this and that considering those weren't even kept when Russell played.

You aren't listening. We are talking about individual dominance.
Does Bill Russell play in Jordans era and dominate? No...
Does Jordan play in Bill Russells era and dominate? Yes unlike anything ever seen before.
Does the whole issue of stacking up and dominating in every era matter? YES...
Theres no damned difference between being the best and being the most dominant. Even you yourself said that Joe Louis would have been blasted out by a fighter like Lennox Lewis.
When we look at Ray Robinson, he would have destroyed any welterweight throughout the history of the sport. 128-1 at one point in his career...if thats not dominance I don't know what is.
Joe Louis most dominant HW ever? Yes I guess no...most dominant fighter ever? No...
I don't see no scoreboard.
A.I. the brain 07-18-2005, 02:29 AM Nope, he wont do it. Next year, he's gonna fall into a slump. and the year after that. he's tiger but he'll fall short.

That argument dioesn't fly. Take any great athlete from this era andf put him the 50's and 60's and they dominate. Its a different game.
You have to judge a basketball player by what they did in the era they played in.
The Fix 07-18-2005, 02:44 AM golf isnt a sport?
it may not be physically demanding but finess and mental strengths are a must.
come on now golf is a sport, it belongs with any other sport around....
chito 07-18-2005, 06:49 AM golf to me is a sport.. it's not physically demanding as boxing or track & field but it requires mental toughness plus you need to learn how to swing & drive the ball and that requires technique! it's so easy for us to judge golf but some people i know who started late in this sport says that it's very difficult to learn & perfect this game.
...He will break his record and he will go down as the greatest Golfer of all times. Unless he gets bored with the game and decides to spend all day long banging his hot ass wife.
marvdave 07-18-2005, 10:57 AM I dont know one person who thinks Gold is a sport. Golf is what rich athletes and old white men do to relax.
I must correct you....it is what 37 year old fat white guys do to relax.
marvdave 07-18-2005, 11:01 AM Tiger Woods is a freak of nature. He will shatter the Golden Bear's record.

Of course golf is a a sport. One of the most difficult to perfect of them all. These morons saying it isn't a sport have probably never even played and if they did they would shoot a 200.
You're absolutely rright Fix, golf takes an enormous amout of physical and mental control. Being able to swing a club in such a way to get the ball to hook or slice on demand to get the 15 foot roolback of a 7 iron from 170 yards. being able to train your body to swing the same way under various conditions is immensely difficult. Peopl who claimit's not a sport most likely suck at it so that makes them feel a little better.
Now as for the question of this thread i will say maybe. Tiger does have hot streaks and cold streaks. He certainly has a chance but it's far from a slam dunk.
marvdave 07-18-2005, 01:22 PM Of course golf is a a sport.
not the way I play it!
Golf is absolutely a sport..try playing it and get back to me. I will agree that the golf etticate(spelling?)is stupid. Freaking Davis Love and Vijay cry if someone moves while they are hitting. They should talk to a baseball player who has to hit a splitty while 50,000 people are screaming.
