View Full Version : Vic vs Montiel in Sydney???

Adrien Warren, AAP
Australia's Vic Darchinyan has his eyes set on winning an amazing 10 boxing world title belts, with a bantamweight unification bout looming in November following a world-title defence in Sydney in September.
Darchinyan has already won seven world title belts, two at flyweight, four at super flyweight and one at bantamweight.
He will defend his IBO bantamweight crown in September, possibly at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, with a Mexican fighter being considered for an opponent.
Darchinyan's manager Elias Nassar said his charge was then looking at a bantamweight unification title fight in the United States in November, which would be shown on American pay television network Showtime.
With negotiations at a delicate stage, Nassar didn't want to reveal which of the bantamweight world champions he was looking at as a possible opponent.
However, Darchinyan has frequently called out Mexico's WBC and WBO bantamweight world champion Fernando Montiel.
A victory over Montiel would give Darchinyan two more world title straps, taking his tally to nine.
Nassar said Darchinyan could have a double-digit tally of world-title belts by as early as March next year if everything went to plan.
The Sydney fighter has recovered from the hand injury, which he took into his last fight.
Darchinyan headed over to the United States last week, for a fortnight's training in Houston.
He is one of several prominent Australian fighters currently in America.

ColWallace 08-03-2010, 02:13 AM Reading it again I'm not sure if they're saying the opponent for the September bout in Sydney might be Montiel or if they're looking at him for the November bout. Thinking about it more, I can't imagine Fernando coming here, but you never know.

Yeah, it doesn't seem overly plausible to me. I doubt Montiel-Darch would go down here.

Who was the last top fighter in their prime to come here? Must be Kessler in 2005. In 2010 it seems incredible that Nate Campbell fought here.
brently1979 08-03-2010, 07:48 PM Vic will just fight some bum in Sydney

Hopefully it isn't a major bum though. Be nice to see Vic have a decent tune-up before having another crack at a big fight overseas.
Love to see Vic v Montiel, with Donaire taking on the winner.
You never know though, he might end up fighting Yhonny Perez. Vic always did like the IBF titles.

It's amazing to go back through Peden's record and see that he fought guys like Campbell, JMM and Barrera.
Not the Melbourne fight, but still a great one:

I always thought Nate was pretty cool and witty. His gangster stylings and trash talk was always tongue-in-cheek. He had some bad luck at the end of his career. Disgraceful how Golden Boy ripped him and Victor Ortiz off back in March.
I had a chuckle at the video of Katsidis at the press conference last weekend. Had to be the most polite and respectful call-out in boxing history!
Dan... 08-03-2010, 11:23 PM I dunno, I've just never liked Nate. He showed a real lack of respect for his opponent in that fight. Quitting as he did against Bradley didn't score any points with me either.

When Campbell was being tossed around as an opponent for Floyd after the Pacquaio fight fell through due to the drug testing...
Nate:"They can pluck hairs from my ball sack between rounds for all I care"
That made me laugh.
Also, Katsidis is all class.
ColWallace 08-04-2010, 12:19 AM I could just imagine Nate watching that footage of Kats: "Nah boy, you gotta hurl a chair at the podium and call that ***** out!"
Philfy 08-05-2010, 08:04 PM Darchinyan v Abner Mares is now the rumour. The veteran v the young lion. Bring it on!

I read this too, but thought Mares was rematching Perez???

A rematch was on the cards at some stage, though recently I haven't heard anything about it. Boxrec has nothing scheduled for either fighter.
Still, a fight against Vic would make sense for Mares. Darchinyan is a recognizable name, brings good money and is seen by some as being in decline. It ticks all the boxes for a young contender.
Credit to Vic for chasing the tough fights. I hope it comes off.
