Since Enter the Dragon? There have been so many. Jet Li's Fist of Legend is one of the best ever.

Jackie Chan's original Drunken Master (1978) is my favorite post-Enter the Dragon martial arts movie.

You're right I saw this movie a few months ago and Tony Jaa makes the old Jackie Chan old and Jet Li stuck in the past...the fight scenes were incredible. It was awesome to see Muay Thai in a movie rather than the cheap versions in Jean Claude Van Dammes movies. This guy is definitely the next guy to look out for when it comes to martial arts action. He has another movie coming out soon but I am not sure what the title is. It has changed around a bit...

HK hasn't really be doing that great but Jackie Chan's New Police Story just came out in HK so we'll see how that goes...

Apparently the U.S. release will have some fight scenes condensed or altered and a different ending in the "mainstream" version.

Whoever decides to change and alter foreign films doesn't have a clue. "They" ruined drunken master, did a poor remake of Lefemme Nikkita. Gutted Leon aka the professional. These people in hollywood try to change these movies to give them broadband appeal. The movies weren't made for that. They are what they are, and I wish movie exects would realize it.

From pro.imdb:

Alternate Versions
A longer director cut, retitled 'Leon: version integrale' has been re-released in French cinemas on June 26, 1996. This version is 26 minutes longer than the previously release version and features all sequences that were removed from the film after disastrous tests with L.A. preview audiences.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new scenes include:
Mathilda asking Leon to have sex with her and Leon refusing;
Leon explaining why he had to leave Italy and go to New York when he was 19 years old;
Mathilda and Leon sleeping together in a bed;
Mathilda threatening to shoot herself playing russian roulette.
Leon and Mathilda hitting the home of a tattoed drug dealer, and setting fire to his supply of drugs;
New training missions where Mathilda learns the ropes of becoming an assassin.
Leon and Matilda going to a restaurant to celebrate her first hit
The scene in which Stansfield questions Tony about Leon and Mathilda's whereabouts was originally longer. Cut from the final version, Stansfield calls the little children back from the kitchen and threatens to shoot them if Tony does not reveal where Leon and Mathilda are hiding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A director's cut has been released on video in Sweden, Norway and Japan, 23 minutes longer than the original theatrical release. It's almost the same as the French original cut, except from the scene where Stan threatens the kids in the kitchen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the USA cable version, a flyover of Central Park in the beginning has been cut for no apparent reason, and the main titles moved to the first scene.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Australian TV version cut out the training scene where the rifle is used to practice on the jogger in the park.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All German versions miss a small scene where Mathilda tells Leon how old she is.

I have Ong Bak on CD and i can upload it on my computer if any one is interested. It is a great movie, the fight scenes are basically the only good part of the movie. I can easily say it isnt the greatest martial arts movie but its good. Its asian style fighting meeting hollywod effects. Jet Li's Kids of Shaolin and also Kunf Fu Master were definitely better than this movie. But in the end it depends on your taste, are you after some hardcore martial arts or some pretty, puzzling and adventerous type of movie?
In the end i gave this move a 7 out of 10, just cos this movie could have really improved in its story line.

Ong Bak 2 was just finished and will be shown here in Thailand by February or March 2005.

BTW, Phanom Yeerum (the lead actor) is a Muay Thai champion and a practitioner of the old & long outlawed "Muay Boran" ...y'know the fists draped with abaca fibers then dipped in resin and broken glass thing...

Bear in mind, as cool as the kicks and jumps look, they ARE choreographed.

He is a muay thai champ so he can fight in real life, but I doubt his opponents fly back 10 feet from one of his knee kicks.

One thing I like about the old school Shaw Bros. films is how nothing is sped up and slow motion is rarely used. The fight scenes, though choreographed are what they would look like in real life.

I got the Taiwan import; I'm not sure if it's a bootleg or a legitimate big production company. The subtitles had spelling errors here and there and sometimes were left of screen.

I only bring it up because it was supposed to be better than the Chinese; does anyone know if the Taiwan is the uncut version? The imdb website says PG-13 so I know the cut I got was not what will be in US theaters - this one was very violent, sex and drug content, profanity - the scene where his buddy gets his arm broken was present, which has been censored in other versions.

It's too bad the story was so lame; I know that's not the point of the movie, but it does distract a little bit when the minimal plot is only there to string together the action sequences.

Great action sequences, but they start a little late. The movie takes a while to get going. And why was his partner called Dirty Balls? I must have missed the explanation...

It was a good watch, though I think when I rewatch it I'll be using fastplay between fight scenes. The best fight scenes for me were in the bar when he took on 3 guys back-to-back-to-back.

yeah neils some guy in my film class saw this and said the story sucked but the fighting was damn good. basically what I keep reading. I have a US bootleg but have yet to watch. I have so many better things to watch before I get to this. I'm driven much more by story than by good choreography.

Anybody seen "OldBoy?" Maybe there is a whole thread to that.

Anyhow, I heard it had a decent story and was a good movie overall. Think it is a korean film. I'll check out its US release. March 25, 2005 apparently. And IMDB has listed an Oldboy for 2006, which looks like it may be a US remake. Heh, guess that means we've got Jet Li, maybe Donnie Yen since he got some name recognition with Hero.

Bet the Korean version is better. Call it a hunch.

Yea its a Thai film not Korean and the main character is Tony Jaa and its his first movie..What an introduction to the world of martial arts movies huh?? I thought the storyline was a bit too old-fashioned but it was good enough to keep my attention and some of the stunts and fighting sequences are GREAT! My favorite scene is when Tony Jaa doesnt want to fight at an underground Muy Thai fight but is forced too and some random guys says, "Hanuman has entered the building" or something like that....Awesome scene and a worthwhile movie, check it out...

Definitely not the best ever. I agree with the consensus. Poor story detracts from the martial arts and stunts. He is freaking amazing though and I hope he gets put into good stories like Hero. That movie rocked. If you are looking for a great martial arts movie, The Tai Chi master with Jet Li is an awesome one. A lot of wire work which I am not a huge fan of but it is still awesome. And on a side note Donny Yen is freaking great and should be used way more. I'd rather see him that Segal or Van Damme or Jackie in a comedy, which have all sucked.
