Miguel Cotto, in his first world title defense Saturday, says he knows all about hard-punching two-time champion Randall Bailey of Miami, Fla.

"You are always concerned when facing big punchers like Bailey," said Cotto, outlining title fight dangers for his defense against Bailey.

Cotto vs. Bailey is on the K2 Klitschko vs. Williams heavyweight championship at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, live on HBO Pay Per View.

"I give Cotto credit, taking on a puncher like me," said Bailey, who has 28 wins - 27 by knockout.

Here's what Cotto said about Bailey during the Wednesday press conference:

"I know that this is an important fight because of the magnitude of the event. I know it will be a tough fight against a dangerous opponent, but I'm very confident of my preparation and that I will win this fight."

"It took a lot of work and more then three years as a professional to win this belt and it will not be easy to take it away from me.

"This belt is going back to Puerto Rico with me."

"As long as you do your work and get ready for fight nothing else matters. I know what I can do inside the ring and I know that this sport is about taking advantage of the mistakes of your opponents and that's what I intend to do on Saturday night"

"I know I'm in a very hot division right now and that it might be the best in the world. So I look forward to facing some of of the top names in 2005 and prove my worth against them"

Cotto vs. Bailey is the featured bout on the Vitali Klitschko vs. Danny Williams heavyweight championship, live on HBO Pay Per View, Saturday Dec. 11 at Mandalay Bay.

Were I to have any say on Cotto's future, I'd draw a career path that takes him through (after Bailey) Ener Julio, Hurtado, Chop Chop, ZJudah, SMitchel, Gatti, VHarris, Hatton.

By the time my man is through with those guys, Kostya will be easy picking (age?); then, PBFloydd...

Then, we'll move up to Welterweight to meet whoever may have whichever crown or crowns at the time...

But, first thing's first, we'll have to get past Bailey...and Randall has been taken out only once (by Hurtado, in Puerto Rico, my man's home!)....! That Bailey, has the best KO rate (27 of 28 wins!) in the division!

And, this year...huge names have fallen to the way-side! Tyson, Roy Jones...! It's an up-set plagued year!

Oh, well, I'm never gonna have any say on Cotto's career.... So, those are other people's problems! ;)

good point, but they may never meet. by the time Cotto moves up to 147, i'll bet Judah will be a jr. middle.

bailey was dangerous about 4 years ago, but if you saw his fights with corley and smith you would'nt think so now. cotto inside 3 rounds.

There is no need for him to fight Julio and Hurtado is at 147 now. I can see a chop-chop fight if he can't secure a major fight but he should be looking for Mayweather, Gatti, Harris, Hatton, KZ, or maybe even Sharmba for his next fight.

As for Judah, even though he is a lefty I think Cotto is too quick on his feet for Judah and would KO the clown by round 8.

Cotto KO 7 in this one.

Cotto should KO Bailey inside of 8. At least that's what my gut is telling me, and that 600K bet I put on my boy.

I think (barring no setbacks) Cotto should be ready for the top four 140 pounders after this fight. Corley wouldn't really show Cotto anything that he hasn't already seen so I wouldn't anticipate any fight between them. I want to see Cotto fight the second most dangerous guy in the division, Vivian Harris. That'd be a hell of a fight.

Actually, chop-chop would be Cotto's first southpaw so he does need the experience. The same goes with Sharmba but he is slicker and would be both the southpaw and boxer experience he needs.

I agree Bailey was dangerous about 3-4 years ago, but you know what they say about the last thing to leave a boxer....his power, given a ***** he may land, and if he lands he generally lands big....then we'll see what Cotto's chin is like.

Cotto is overwelming fav and should get it done inside the distance but it is the year for upsets! Put it this way i wouldn't have my mortgage on it!

Cotto KO 7 in this one.I guess I should have done my musings in the fantasy threads?

Anyway, fat chance that I'd have any say in any of what Cotto would do: in the immediate or far future.

Whether the prospects of fighting Hurtado and Julio or Judah are slim or none existent...All I can say is, stranger things have happened in boxing.

Oh, well, like I said, I'll never get a chance to guide Miguel's career.

Maybe I just wanted Kostya to be old enough...? And Mayweather too? :o
+++++++
Just for the record, I laid out 200gs for Cotto by KO :( :D
