i have heard a few different views supporting one argument or the other ........for example using weights makes you lose stamina and flexibility or that using them actually make you more powerful.........

i have just starting boxing and used to do some weights but have know stopped, am i right in doing so???

Depends on the reason for using weights. Some transform it into a bodybuilding competition, rather than building strength. But with weights, you should complement and supplement those exercises with cardio and good ol' fashioned calisthentics (pushups, situps, etc. etc.). That's the new school thought though. Depending on your trainer, they may suggest just sticking with calisthentics, if they are old-school.

Depends on the exercises with weights you do and the weight you lift. I never use to lift weights but started so I could increase my punch a little bit and get stronger in the arms (a heavy bag can do better for you).

If you do the right exercises and lift light weights and do extremely high reps than weights will be ok. However, if you lift like a bodybuilder that will definately be detrimental.

so what sort of exercises and how much weight/reps should be used to increase punch power without being detrimental?

Shadow box with weights/resistance bands.

lifting weights the classic way to bulk wont help you much as a boxer.

the idea is being as strong and enduranced as possible at the same time as being as light as possible.

but muscle condition will cause it will encrease your strenght and stamina without adding weight to your body.

do a full circle of 1set of 30reps on your upperbody and 1set of 50reps on the underbody.

do this 2-3 times a week.

other than that calistenics like pushupps, situpps, chins, dipps and squats are good.

Are the resistance bands the ones you grip around your hands and the band goes around your back?

.

dont mean to sound thick but what do you mean by this... 1 set 30 reps of say bicep curls at a comftable weight and 1 set 50 reps of leg curls twice a week?

Train like an old school fighter.
Don't use weights or high tech ****.

Fighters from years past did not have these things.....& were incredibly well-schooled, well conditioned ANIMALS.

Weights will not increase your punching power. Snap, technique, & some help from mother nature are what you need.

Yep, but handweights (e.g., those 1-5 lbs. for aerobics classes) serve just as well...

Depends on what you are trying to achieve.

There is a program I would recommend for speed and another for strength and power.

i think weights will be good for leg but not the upper body.

What if you want to weight lift to add something like 20-30 pounds of muscle and cut the fat to be ripped, what kind of lifting would that be, consistent or bodybuilder style? And yeah, don't bodybuilders lift weight pylometric style or are you guys talking about the ones who do like 2 reps of whatever their max is?

yeah thats what i mean, i said full circle because its kinda difficult to translate the program to english.......ill try.

do about half off your max.

example if you max 200 in the bench than use 100 on muscle condition.

50 reps 1 set

legpress
toepress
legcurls and the on where you do it the opposite way.

50 crunch

bench
flyes forward
flyes downward
forward bent sidelift(dont know what its called)
downpull back neck
militarypress
downpull front off neck
sitting rowing
dont know what its called but rocky does it with dumbells in rocky 2
bicepcurls
triceps pushdown
50 situpps
30pushupps
100 flaks (dont know the name, you lie with you forhead on the ground, with your arms to straight to each side and than lift them upp and down.

do this fas for best effect, the ideal time spant is 20min.

There are a ton of things to do to improve on yout skills vs 1 - 1 1/2 hr's just lifting weights. I say working on your skills and do old school boxing workouts. You can do polymetrics, running, medicine ball workouts, and other things that will improve your power. Techinique timing, and leaverage is much more important to punching power vs. lifting power.

When you get good enough then move to the weights slowly. View them as a supplement to regular workouts when you peak at other stuff. Basically once you master something move on something else to get better.
