Ray Mercer vs. Ron Sparks re-booked for King of the Cage in September
by Steven Marrocco on Jul 15, 2010 at 2:45 pm ET
After their first meeting fell by the wayside, Ray Mercer (1-0) and Ron Sparks (5-0) are set to duke it out in the cage.

Mercer, an Olympic gold medalist and former world champion boxer, will meet undefeated super heavyweight Sparks at King of the Cage's "No Mercy" on Sept. 17 at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut. The event is expected to air live on HDNet.

KOTC promoter Terry Trebil**** confirmed the news Wednesday with (Link).

Mercer and Sparks were originally scheduled to meet April 16 at a KOTC event in Michigan, but the bout was pulled from the card for unknown reasons.

Mercer is best known to MMA fans as the man who knocked out former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia at a June 2009 Adrenaline MMA event. But "Merciless" made his first appearance on the MMA scene in a June 2007 exhibition loss by submission to Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson under the Cage Fury Fighting Championship banner in New Jersey.

Mercer, who will be 49 years old at the time of the fight, earned the heavyweight division's gold medal in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, and began boxing professionally in 1989, and he most recently competed in the sport in September 2008.

Meanwhile, Sparks has opened his career with five-straight wins. "The Monster" burst onto the local scene in his native Kentucky in 2006 with three wins that lasted a total of 77 seconds. Sparks then didn't compete in 2007 or 2008 but has since returned with two more wins, including one by TKO in just 67 seconds.

"No Mercy" is also expected to feature a bout between undefeated welterweight prospects Miles Jury and Sam Oropeza, as well as bantamweight standout Abel Cullum.

Should be a good one, looks like it'll be a slugfest. Is that really Mercer? Man he looks so old now compared to his boxing days. As they say sometimes in boxing, "someone's 0 has got to go" hehe cool.

Mercer lost to 2 kickboxers, one by verbal submission and one was a lopped sided decision
