It's always difficult to assess Ray Robinson at welterweight since there isn't an abundance of footage of him at 147. However, by all accounts, he was significantly better at welterweight than he was at middleweight. That's a scary thought.

If that is so, i don't see where Leonard has an advantage except for defense. He has the heart and ability to compete and survive, but Robinson wins a clear decision.

Robinson had more power (he knocked down people moving backwards), faster feet and equal handspeed, chin is similar, MAYBE the edge in the beard department goes to leonard, but leonard cannot test robinson chin

robinson in a fight that, even if not a domination, would really frustrate leonard because of his lack of answers

and there is no weakness leonard can try exploit in the negotiations.

I don't think a prime robinson could lose to anyone at welter (when given 6 months to train, just so that no one mentions jake la motta, those were different times)

One of the greatest v.s. one of the most overrated. Yes I know he was a very good fighter, but I think in the 'great' department he is one of the most overrated fighters to be called great. God forbid the stipulations Robinson would have to agree to to make this fight come off. Leonard would probably have it written in contract that Robinson couldn't throw punches in the even rounds and alternate hands in the odd ones. Either way, the Real Sugar Ray knocks this glamour boy out in 7.

Robinson never lost at welter, as would sure as hell not lose to Leonard either. The greatest fighter of all time would school Leonard from the start. Robinson wins, either by UD or late tko.

leonard was gifted with more bs decisions for being the "media" darling. to call this a fantasy fight is insulting to
Sugar Ray Robinson's memory. leonard could not stand up to
Mr.Robinson's power...on his best night. cut me a break!!
by "fantasy" in this case i hope you mean fantasy like
the wizard of oz. you can't mention leonards name in the same breath as Sugar Ray Robinsons!

The two greatest welterweights of all time.

I totally agree.

LMFAO @ someone saying Jake LaMotta was as skilled and/or talanted as Sugar Ray Leonard. The fact that noone else argued this is pretty laughable.

Has Sugar Ray Robinson ever faced anyone close to the talent of Sugar Ray Leonard?

No he hasn't. Ray Robinson nor Ray Leonard has ever faced anyone as talanted or as skilled as the other. They both had an identical style so fighting eachother would be like looking into a mirror.

Leonard actually had a slight edge in hand and foot speed, while Robinson had the edge in power; both had great chins. I say this fight would've been so close, with so much skill shown by both fighters, that it ended up in a 15 round draw.

You may be right.

Some people tend to not give Prime Leonard enough credit when mentioned in the same breath as all time p4p greats, greater than him.

I don't think Ray Robinson was that much better than Ray Leonard at welterweight, if he was at all. Ray Leonard does deserve more credit/respect in my opinion.

I'd be surprised if many people that are saying SRR would murder SRL have seen enough, if any, footage of SRR to back up that opinion. I know I haven't. This could easily go either way IMO.

There's plenty of footage of Robinson, so I would imagine a bunch of these guys have seen him fight. The unfortunate part though, is there's very little available of Robinson in his Welterweight days, and I can only think of one fight of his at that weight where you can gauge him in (I've seen about ten minutes of him vs. Fusari...the Angott fight is also available, but the quality is severely lacking). There's simply not enough footage of Robinson at 147, and I personally don't think it's fair to match these guys up at that weight...Too much guesswork in trying to handicap the past his prime version of a 160 pound Robinson (lots of him available on film from that weight) and then match him up with a 147 pound Leonard.

If someone really wants to match up these two, then for the sake of accurary (opinions, that is) it should be discussed above the Welterweight limit.

That's what I meant really, along with there being no footage of him up against anyone remotely as talented as Leonard to use as a gauge.
