The whole thing is pretty simple, it's easier with three than four, though. For example, I did it again with 297. Since 9 is the highest number possible, you cannot subtract to get that, so you'd have to add. Basically, you add or subtract your numbers to get that. Or divide and multiply (I think) for the four digit numbers. For example, 424 will get you, 4/2=2x4=8, thus you picked 8. It's pretty simple. (Not directed at anyone, just in case anyone hadn't figured out how it was done)

There is, I posted it on the first page.
For four numbers, it's multiply/divide, depending on the order of the numbers, for three it's add/subtract.
For instance, 187, 8-1=7, 7+1=8. I'm not sure how it decides which to take, but that's what it does when it decides.
