View Full Version : What all-time athlete/person would you have most loved to see in MMA?
-Swizzy- 06-25-2010, 03:39 PM For me its Alexander Karelin. I would have loved to see Karelin throw Lesnar around the ring like a rag doll. Not hating on Lesnar, but Karelin would have 'EASILY' beat him.

sammiza567 06-25-2010, 08:52 PM obs tyson or lee. tyson in his prime is the most dominant mma hw of all time. no wrestling training. he would put lesnar to sleep in 10 seconds.

Hear, hear. Olympic silver medal as a middleweight, Golden Gloves champion as a heavyweight with some pro experience as well. Also with that insane grip he had in his hands he could've had some nasty submissions. With the right training he could've been a 3-weight champion in MMA IMO.

what kind of match is that? it looks kinda fake and if thats an mma match, why doesn't Karelin have a fighter profile on sherdog?
edit:"He also took part in professional wrestling, performing in a worked contest against Akira Maeda in the professional wrestling promotion" - wikipedia
that explains it.

whats so exceptional about Cotto that would make him interesting as an MMA fighter?
monaroCountry 06-26-2010, 01:50 AM Alexander Karelin for sure
SmallTown 06-26-2010, 01:56 AM Probably not my top choice but I figured what the hell. Bo Jackson-He could do everything else, why the hell not mma. As everyone knows, he was a super athlete.

I saw that on Wiki after I posted this. However, he does have a fighter profile on Sherdog for this match. And the Wiki thing doesn't explain anything. And you didn't post the full passage.

what do you mean? I only posted what was necessary. the rest of it only says "Rings in 1999". so what....

I just found it. its cuz on sherdog they have his name as "Aleksandr" instead of "Alexsander", thats why I couldn't find it originally.

Are you being serious right now?
He's a ****in warrior. The real question is, why not?

Here's the full passage:
On February 21, 1999 Aleksandr Karelin defeated Akira Maeda in a Professional Wrestling contest that drew an incredible gate of $2.5 million. The match gained widespread media coverage, including mentions in The New York Times and Sports Illustrated.[3]. The match took place in the Maeda owned Professional Wrestling organization, RINGS. Though widely considered to have been a shoot style pro-wrestling contest the match is counted as an official mixed martial arts match in Sherdogs record database [
The passage is somewhat contradictory and is non-conclusive. Rings is generally regarded as an MMA org. (there is a bit of cross-over, especially in the early days of MMA in Japan which contributes to the confusion). The match is "widely considered to have been a shoot style pro-wrestling contest." Widely considered by whom? And this is non-conclusive by nature. The "match is counted as an official mixed martial arts match" by Sherdog, hence the slight contradiction and the non-conclusiveness.
Perhaps someone could answer to this situation, but the Wiki article fails to do so. It is Wiki though so it goes with the territory of course.
Mugicha 06-26-2010, 03:44 AM Oh for the record, I didn't watch the match I just posted it. Sorry for that, but I don't have the will right now.

Not that I wouldn't want to see him as an mma fighter, I just don't see whats so special about him being in MMA. There are about 50 other boxers I would rather see in MMA over him.

oh, thats further down his wiki page... I didn't read that far down.

well if you watch it, you'll clearly see a fake match. had that been a real match, Karelin could have destroyed him with 1 hand tied behind his back, and thats not an exaggeration.

Couture, Fyodor, Noguiera, Arona etc all fought in RINGS. It was like a feeder org for PRIDE. It's MMA except no punching to the head on the groud i believe, no elbows, and i think no knees to head either.
the Karelin fight may have had special rules, idk.
jakkups 06-26-2010, 11:15 PM The Maeda vs Karelin fight was actually Maeda's swansong from pro-wrestling. It wasn't an actual fight. After Maeda retired the org switched from worked MMA fights to actual fights. The "fight" itself was made to look the way it was simply because knowone in their right mind would ever think that in an actual MMA match Maeda would be able to handle Karelin.
