View Full Version : so running burns muscle HELLRAZAH 07-04-2005, 01:37 AM does that mean i should lift weights and do body exercises straight after? PunchDrunk 07-04-2005, 02:27 AM No, your weightlifting sessions will not be optimal, if done after a cardio session. You should wait at least 8 hours before lifting. The "burning" of muscle factor of running shouldn't be excaggerated either. It's not problem to most people, you can run and be reasonably muscular anyway. If you're a competitive bodybuilder however... HELLRAZAH 07-04-2005, 03:56 AM nah im not a body builder dont really lift weights at all more body weight exercises, im just gettin back in fighting condition and i need to drop 3 kilos but i dont wanna lose any muslce or power PunchDrunk 07-04-2005, 04:11 AM You shouldn't worry too much about it then. As long as you train hard you won't have a problem. boxer2k5 07-04-2005, 01:36 PM the only time your body burns muslce is when its done burning fat and you are not fueling yourself right PunchDrunk 07-04-2005, 01:56 PM That is true, Boxer2K5. However, excessive cardiovascular excercise, like running, also causes atrophy in the muscles. It makes them smaller to a certain point of course, you can't run off all your muscle. It's basically the reverse of what weight training does. Weight training stimulates the anaerobic muscle fibres, which are the ones with the biggest growth potential (to a certain extent, it may also "convert" the characteristics of aerobic muscle fibre, towards anaerobic capacity, this is still controversial though), therefore you get bigger. Running only stimulates, depending on intensity of course, the aerobic muscle fibres. These fibres don't grow as much, and emphasizing on this type of training causes atrophy in the bigger, anaerobic muscle fibres. This means that running long distance, often, will cause a degree of muscular atrophy. This is part of the reason why marathon runners look like skeletons. :) HELLRAZAH 07-05-2005, 01:15 AM how long do you guys run, i be running only about 1 and a half miles a day and doing sprints 3 times a week boxer2k5 07-05-2005, 02:24 AM i run liek twice a week 3 miles and i do hill sprints and suicides thats all on the same day as i run i might start runnign more but i dotn feel like it but when m ready to drop down to middleweight im goign to run everymourning ricecrispi 07-05-2005, 02:32 AM how long do you guys run, i be running only about 1 and a half miles a day and doing sprints 3 times a week THe sprints and 1 1/2 miles is good because you wont get to that extreme point where you burn of muscle. Punchpower said it all in excessive cardiovascular workouts. I did 1 mile sprints. Basketball wind sprints that are about 2-3 mins long x5 times. Sprints uphill or bleachers for about 10-15 mins depending on how my body feels. I try not to rest more than 1 min between each sprint except after the 1 mile one. Slipx 07-05-2005, 02:34 AM oh so u comin to my divison. Hunna 07-05-2005, 12:07 PM i run liek twice a week 3 miles and i do hill sprints and suicides thats all on the same day as i run i might start runnign more but i dotn feel like it but when m ready to drop down to middleweight im goign to run everymourning inorder to burn fat, u do burn some muscle. i forget the ratio of whats burnt but some fat is burnt with muscle. once, excess fat is burnt, ur natural bodyfat is burnt then muscle. IF u overheat, like do i really long or/amnd strenuous workout/ overheat and burn muscle or can permanently damage them, like those marathon runners who ran, even though the race was called off due to extreme temperatures... resulting in a runners leg muscles turned rubber like and leg latter amputated. |
