This fitness competition girl turned professional wrestler went from big butch scary chick to in-ring performer, and inexplicably, Playboy covergirl. She wrestled men inside the ring and became the first woman to win the Intercontinental Belt. She dated and lived with Triple-H and was part of his Degeneration X faction before being Eddie Guerrero's "Mamacita". She was also paired at one point with "Sexual Chocolate" Mark Henry.

Tons of plastic surgery into her WWF career, she became an icon, posing for Playboy, getting mainstream attention, showing up on talk shows and award shows. But as her mannish frame became more feminine, she was no longer a credible opponent in the ring against men, and she was too big for the women. She did wrestle briefly in the women's division, spanking her opponents when they were submitted to her. How pitiful.

Behind her back, though, Triple-H was banging Vince McMahon's daughter, and when her fame escaltated, her attitude became unbearable (read her best-selling book that's now about 50 cents on amazon.com). She actually began to believe she was type of sex symbol, that a silicone-filled Amazon with a remade face was every man's fantasy. She had an implant bust in the ring once. Nice.

She had an inflatable sense of her worth, and with Trips banging Steph, she didn't have the pull anymore, and she thought she was worth Stone Cold money. WWF didn't renew her contract; she decided to become an actress, which totally didn't work.

She dyed her hair, hooked up with Sean Waltman aka X-Pac or Syxx-Pac. The two did drugs and beat the **** out of each other, apparently. As they both flirted with TNA wrestling (Waltman actually appeared on a couple shows; Laurer backed out when they wouldn't pay for her first-class fight and after she suspected they wanted her to job to Trinity), their fame fleeting, Laurer made gossip mag headlines by placing a restraining order on Waltman, saying he was abusive. She now goes by Chyna Doll I believe (not sure if that's the legal name) and is involved in some "musical act." She frequently shows up at C-list celebrity gatherings, often being lampooned as worst dressed. She has "Used-Up" her 15 minutes of fame a couple times, and looks scarier and scarier every day.

HIGHLIGHTS: One of the more recognizable wrestlers in the WWF, and the most recognizable female wrestler ever (apologies to Fabulous Moolah); Playboy shoot; lots of money

LOWLIGHTS: everything post-WWF pretty much. And looking like an ugly, buff man for a long time and having photographic evidence that she's not naturally beautiful.

I used to question whether she was actually a guy... After seing the bone structure of her face and skull she is a guy or was at some point in her life! Whether she took steroids to become one or was born as a guy, both are too much for me to handle! I'll pass! :eek:

BACK ON TOP ... Joanie Laurer tells all about her life

UNDER her stage name of Chyna,
Joanie Laurer was the most
successful woman in the history
of the American wrestling business.

She competed in main event matches against the men and became the only female to ever hold the prestigious WWE intercontinental championship, previously worn by greats like Ultimate Warrior, The Rock and Steve Austin.

Then four years ago Joanie lost everything when she found out her beloved fiancé, and fellow wrestler, Triple H was cheating on her with WWE boss Vince McMahon's daughter Stephanie.

The star lost her job, her home and her man, saw many wrestling fans turn on her for 'selling out' and found it hard to get work in Hollywood and elsewhere.

She then entered into another doomed relationship with wrestler Sean 'X-Pac' Waltman.

That ended with the release of a Paris Hilton style sex tape - which Joanie says she had no idea he was going to put out and wants no money from or anything to do with - and each making highly publicised allegations against the other.

But now, thanks to a group of trusted new friends and US reality TV show The Surreal Life, the former Playboy cover girl told us she's firmly back on her feet.

In an exclusive interview Joanie said: "I really really gave it to them on The Surreal Life and it turned out to be a fantastic decision.

"That show totally opened a new chapter in my life, at a time when I discouraged and really needed that support.

"It's given me a real confidence, and I now have people who are standing very strongly behind me and giving me that big push I need to move up a level to where I belong.

"Despite a very difficult few years I'm very proud of my actions and very glad about what I've done and continually pursued. I've always given it my best.

"That was how I got my job in wrestling in the first place and became a success - and I'll be damned if I was going to crawl into the corner and die after that.

"It just wasn't going to happen.

"Butterflies are meant to fly - and that's me."



PAUL-ED APART ... Joanie was
devastated when fiance cheated



In the WWE - then named the WWF - Joanie was billed as the Ninth Wonder Of The World, the successor to legendary Eight Wonder Andre The Giant.

She made her debut on Raw in February 1995 and was quickly hired as Triple H's bodyguard, with the two then joining Shawn Michaels to form one of wrestling's most famous factions - Degeneration X.

After that Chyna became the first female to compete in the Royal Rumble, won the intercontinental title three times and took the women's division championship from Ivory at WrestleMania XVII in April 2001.

Then her world started to fall apart.

Joanie told us: "At that time there was an on-screen love affair between Vince McMahon's daughter Stephanie and my fiancé Paul Levesque, known as Triple H.

"They were also having a real-life affair behind my back. I found out about it, confronted Vince and lost my job.

"I didn't want that to happen, I wanted to carry on as a professional and work around any personal issues and made that known.

"I was told face-to-face by Vince McMahon that we would be renegotiating contracts and how grateful he was that I was part of his company and how professional I had been about the whole thing, after Paul and Stephanie had been lying to me.

"I was then faxed a letter saying I would not be needed for the rest of my contract, which I believe was nine months.

"I was not technically fired but contractually obligated without my use being needed.

"I confronted Vince and Stephanie, although I've never said a word to Paul again."

It's a situation current superstar Matt Hardy also finds himself in, being let go by the WWE after discovering his long-term girlfriend Lita had been sleeping with close pal Edge.

Joanie didn't know about that, although understands how it could happen, and adds the way she was treated by Vince McMahon's group means she'll never return.

She said: "I was one of the company's highest commodities and biggest supporters. They were like my family and it was the only life I had ever known.

"What happened to me was a real disgrace and a disrespect to me and the all the hard work I had done promoting and competing for them.

"You had a woman who was Vince McMahon's daughter and was supposed to be a role model to me rather than have an affair with my fiancé and then I got punished for it.

"That's a very cruel, disrespectful and immoral thing to do.

"Most people think sooner or later I'll be back, but the truth is because I believe it is an immoral business there will be no return.

"I now consider myself a part of the New Japan Pro Wrestling family - although I'm not currently fighting - where a wonderful man called Antonio Inoki saved my life and gave me confidence among the best fighters in the world.

"So rather than seeing Chyna in WWE, NWA:TNA or any American group, you'll be seeing more of New Japan in the United States."

BATTLE ... star had to fight outside the ring
After leaving the WWE, Joanie became embroiled in a legal dispute with them after WWE claimed copyright of the name "Chyna" which, along with people's perceptions of her, meant she was back at square one in terms of finding work.

"I have suffered a lot of mental anxiety and torture since then," the star admits. "It was a real battle for me, as I didn't know how to deal with it.

"I had lost my fiancé, my job, my home and a huge fan support base.

"There was a lot of anger among wrestling fans, as they thought I was taking away something that millions and millions of people around the world loved to watch.

"They had this perception, because I'd come to Hollywood right away, that I thought I was better than them.

"And being a sports entertainer put me in a predicament, because then when I tried to pursue a Hollywood career there wasn't anyone prepared to take the baggage that came along with Chyna.

"I had to start from scratch. I did everything from penning hand-written letters to going on auditions with hundreds of people to doing alien hooker movies, which I quite enjoyed.

"People thought I was humiliating myself but I was going out there and saying: 'No way world you're not stopping me. I'm going out. Bring it on.'

"Nobody can do that by themselves and, when I've been at my lowest points, I've had a real band of brothers and sisters around me picking me up, looking out for me and reminding me that I'm a fighter.

"And all of a sudden this new change is occurring in my life."

SURREAL ... but Joanie loved VH1 show

That new change is thanks to The Surreal Life - a reality TV show come soap opera which sees seven celebrities locked in a house 24/7 for two weeks, from which VH1 make a series of half-hour programmes.

Joanie's "crazy, silly, loveable activities" in the house made her the undoubted star of the highly rated series, although she admits some of her housemates didn't quite get it.

"There were six other celebrities in the house and people watching the show who just thought I was some crazy nut," Joanie told us.

"But it was my chance to kill many birds with one stone.

"Over the last few years I've been in my own personal war with certain things that have been going on with my life.

"So what I decided to do was take The Surreal Life and use that show as a format for myself and a last hurrah to scream some messages to fans out there, to the wrestling world, to Hollywood and to the personal people involved in my life.

"I was going to use that show as my own format to get those messages across, to show how people could relate to me as a real person.

"I put myself on the line, let it all hang out and VH1 got what I was doing.

"There's a reunion show coming up in the US in May, that will be based around me and I'm very proud of that.

Joanie, who is currently happily single, adds: "I am a champion and have been working for many years to uphold the reputation of who I am and what my father always wished me to be - a successful, well-spoken, literate, intelligent woman with a sense of humour who enjoys life.

"I never lost sight of myself, even when the whole world thought I had because of hearsay and gossip and perceptions.

"I've let all those people out there who thought I'd disappeared, or thought this and that about me, know that they can always bet on Number Nine."

And no, sometimes they adjust the story lines to accomodate real life (Matt Hardy and Lita), but Debra was with Jeff Jarrett at a time Austin was with her, Tori Wilson was with Billy Kidman during most of her time in real life, Nidia was with Angle's brother when she was in storylines with Jamie Noble, etc.

Chyna was horrible. Even though she had a lot of work done on her face, I still dont find her attractive.
