View Full Version : Ultimate Puerto Rican Champ?
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 12-06-2004, 10:26 PM Puerto Rico has produced some great fighters. So who is the Ultimate Puerto Rican fighter?
Is it Wilfredo Gomez who dominated the 122lb division against greats from Mexico big names that include:
Carlos Zarate, Guadlupe Pintor
Or is it Edwin Rosario who at young age, Defeated tough Mexican veteran Jose Luiz Ramirez in their first bout, beat a young Frankie Randall. He also after suffering a devastatin TKO loss against JLR in the rematch, arguably defeated and changed a Prime Hector Camacho into a runner?
Or is it Felix Trinidad
Who gave Yori Boy, and fernando Vargas their first official and real loss and first person to KO william Joppy?
trinidadpr87 12-06-2004, 10:27 PM Im Going With Trinidad But In About 5 Years I Think It Will Be Cotto.

i say its tito
Nick1998 12-06-2004, 10:30 PM Cant forget about Carlos Ortiz. HE held the lightwelt belt for I believe it was ten years back in the 1950's
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 12-06-2004, 10:32 PM I dont know i think i find it a little hard to put Trinidad above Rosario and Gomez.
trinidadpr87 12-06-2004, 10:34 PM Rosario Didn't Beat Randall.
trinidadpr87 12-06-2004, 10:35 PM And Why Isnt Camacho Up There.
Sir_Jose 12-06-2004, 10:37 PM Benitez is the best PR Champ in history in my opinion. Tito wasn't even competative in his two biggest fights.
trinidadpr87 12-06-2004, 10:40 PM Wilfredo Gomez Should Be Up There Too.
Nick1998 12-06-2004, 10:41 PM yea...i forgot about Camacho..he was a beast at 130..I wouldnt go as far as saying Benitez was the best PR champ ever. He did beat Duran but he also lost to Hearns and Sugar Ray. In my opinion, He is up there but not the best
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 12-06-2004, 10:41 PM Dont let my first post limit you its of all time u can choose anyone u think it is as long as he is puerto rican.
Sir_Jose 12-06-2004, 10:43 PM yea...i forgot about Camacho..he was a beast at 130..I wouldnt go as far as saying Benitez was the best PR champ ever. He did beat Duran but he also lost to Hearns and Sugar Ray. In my opinion, He is up there but not the best
There is no shame losing to Leonard and Hearns. Both are legends
Raekwon 12-06-2004, 10:58 PM Im Going With Trinidad But In About 5 Years I Think It Will Be Cotto.
ill go with that also
borikua 12-06-2004, 11:01 PM 1. Wilfredo "Bazoka" Gomez 44-3-1 42KO's
2. Wilfred "El Radar" Benitez 53-8-1 31KO's
3. Felix "Tito" Trinidad 42-1-0 35KO's
If you want a list of all our champs click here (spanish) (http://www.boxeomundial.net/sites/boxeo_boricua/index.php?page_sel=campeones)
borikua 12-06-2004, 11:19 PM Wilfred "El Radar" Benitez was the yungest boxer to become champ in boxing history at the age of 17.
Wilfredo "Bazooka" Gomez - Still has the record for title defences with 17 all by KO, At lightweight if I'm not wrong...

super bantamweight
Colonel Jones 12-07-2004, 12:12 AM I'd put Gomez 1st. He kayoed some guys that had just as impressive ko's as he did. Benitez and Trinidad i'd put tied for second. My opinion.
Xecutioner 12-07-2004, 12:40 AM wildred benitez
wildredo gomez
carlos ortiz

tito trinidad
chapo rosario

#1500323- Camacho Jr.
:D
jabsRstiff 12-07-2004, 06:59 AM Trinidad, then Ortiz.
Gomez racked up a whole bunch of KO's over some ordinary competition, at 122. His biggest win was over Zarate, a bantamweight.
Gomez had only mild success when he went up to 126. Of course, he had the misfortune of facing a prime Sanchez, & a coming-into-his-own Azumah Nelson.
They both absolutely destroyed him.
I think Gomez was overrated back in his day, & continues to be overrated now.
Rosario Didn't Beat Randall.
Sure he did.
Back before Rosario won the lightweight title he defeated Randall in a ten round bout in June of '85.
cmason 12-07-2004, 07:38 AM yea...i forgot about Camacho..he was a beast at 130..I wouldnt go as far as saying Benitez was the best PR champ ever. He did beat Duran but he also lost to Hearns and Sugar Ray. In my opinion, He is up there but not the best
yeah, but he won the title at 17. got to be worth a mention.
ortiz was world champion when it was hard to win a championship, let alone keep it for as long as he did.
trephination 12-07-2004, 07:40 AM Trinidad is by far my favorite boxer so i gotta go with him.
jabsRstiff 12-07-2004, 07:54 AM Edwin Rosario.....I really liked him. He wasn't, however, a great fighter. Far too inconsistent.
He was one of the hardest punchers I've ever seen...& I never saw a better PROSPECT than he...
But, he never turned out to be the complete fighting machine he appeared to be in his pre-title days.
He had some great victories (Bramble, Loreto Garza)....& some bad losses (Chavez, Nazario, Ramirez)...
Just too inconsistent.
bandito 12-07-2004, 12:31 PM Im Going With Trinidad But In About 5 Years I Think It Will Be Cotto.
tito is the best and biggest boxing superstar from puerto rico. and ur saying that in ONLY 5 years cotto will be better!?!?!?! i don't think so. if he ever is, which i dont' think he will be, it will take his whole career to do so!!
trinidad is the best from puerto rico
Mr. Ryan 12-07-2004, 12:35 PM Easily Felix Trinidad. Trinidad is a guy who truly embodied the Puerto Rican hero thing. Wilfredo Gomez was a better fighter, but Trinidad was a bigger national hero.

How was Gomez better ?
Exciterx24 12-07-2004, 01:24 PM 1a. Wilfredo Gómez
1b. Félix Trinidad
2. Wilfredo Benítez
4. Héctor Camacho
Nick1998 12-07-2004, 02:47 PM i remember going into the Sanchez fight Gomez was like 31-0 with 30 KO's. That is amazing to have 30 KO's out of 31 fights especially only weighing 122 pounds.
jabsRstiff 12-07-2004, 03:21 PM Carlos Zarate vs. Alfonso Zamora, at 118.
Zarate was 45-0, with 44 KO's
Zamora was 28-0, 28 KO's
The little guys can bang !

DAMMNNNN You can say that again
Mr. Ryan 12-07-2004, 03:38 PM How was Gomez better ?
It's hard to argue with his straight right. His chin was a bit shakier, but overall he was technically sounder.
brickhouse187 12-07-2004, 03:41 PM I believe it is Trinidad because he is the first to KO Joppy, and Mayorga. He is a new and improved Tito. He is on his way to owning another major belt since taking two years off. even though I still believe he can't beat Hopkins.
Mr. Violence 12-07-2004, 03:55 PM Maybe Gomez and Benitez meant more to Puerto Rican history but my personal favorite out of the Puerto Rican Champs is Tito. He is a great KO artist.
triggerhappy 12-07-2004, 04:40 PM p r are bumbs in boxing they dont make it very far...
trinidadpr87 12-07-2004, 04:45 PM first off you dont know how to spell bums and second stop hatin if you dont like puerto ricans so much than why you got one in your sig.
Im Going With Trinidad But In About 5 Years I Think It Will Be Cotto.
yup me too tito is fading a cotto is just getting mo popular
BC BOB 12-07-2004, 06:19 PM Carlos Ortiz , with Benitez and Gomez next, Trinadad could match them if he beat Hopkins..... I don't think he'll ever do that.
Nick1998 12-07-2004, 06:59 PM Dont forget Tito was the first to KO Vargas and Campas. He beat Yori Boy when he was 56-0 and suppose to be the second coming of JC. But he still needs to get by Hopkins to be GOAT
psychopath 12-07-2004, 07:14 PM wildred benitez

MlLkMan 12-07-2004, 07:26 PM Im Going With Trinidad But In About 5 Years I Think It Will Be Cotto.
Yea me too, Cotto is climbing quickly.
MexicanBoxer 12-07-2004, 09:01 PM its gomez he was the best 122 pounder of all time , theres no question, but the most popular is Tito.
neverlast 12-07-2004, 09:36 PM In there best weight class, Gomez was Numero Uno. NOBODY beat him at 122 and he turned back the challenges of terrific fighters like Carlos Zarate and Lupe Pintor. He was a superb boxer with outstanding balance and brutal power.
Rosario was good and hard hiiter but he was beatable. Trinidad was great but I still think Oscar beat him. There's a few names that should be metioned like Carlos Ortiz, Esteban DeJesus, Alfredo Escalera, Wilfred Benitez, Jose Torres and that's just in my time. There are more before my day.
I have to cast my final vote for Gomez who was and always will be the "KING" of the 122 lb. class !
