I don't think it would have made a difference to be honest. His salary is supposedly $1.5 million a year for 4 years. No NRL club generates the kind of revenue it would take to pay that kind of salary.

No worries, it is only one player. If the AFL is prepared to pay these guys well above what their best players are earning that is their decision.

If Rugby League had a strong leader like him then perhaps it would not find itself in it's current predicament. The thing is both the Gold Coast & Western Sydney teams will be fully supported so that eventually they will take hold. The AFL are not looking short term here. People said Sydney & Brisbane would fail too and both those clubs are strong. The AFL know the numbers in the beginning will be crap. Patience and money are 2 things they have plenty of. Rugby League should have had the same long term vision twenty or thirty years ago. You can't relocate or start a new team in a new location & expect it to thrive. League should already have teams in W.A & S.A at the very least. But unfortunately expansion is not part of their vocabulary. The tops of their hands have been warm for years because they sit on em all the time. League is a fantastic game, it's just not being run anywhere near as well as it deserves.

There is a long list of flops from Rugby League over the years but Karmicheel Hunt and SBW have made the transition well and will end up playing Rugby Union in the longer term, undoubtedly very talented guys. Given their success it's likely a lot more RL stars to be signed to French clubs.

Only the class backs would have any chance of making it in the AFL. Big forwards just wont have the motor.
Hayne is the only NSW back that fits that bill. QLD is just blessed with more classy backs.

There is also a rumour down here that Essendon is talking to Inglis. Not sure how accurate it is but that's what they said on radio down here.

I also agree with that, and I'm not saying it is ideal, but the bottom line is that if these other codes are going to come along with offers of well over $1 million a year for these guys then we just cannot compete. I'm saying the game will be fine without some of these guys, and it will, as has been proven time and time again over the past decade.

Typically nothing because in the majority of cases players are leaving when their contracts expire. Even when they are leaving mid-contract the club will typically grant players an early release and very rarely does the club receive any compensation whatsoever.

The sad thing is if he somehow does exceptionally well in AFL, he'll probably stay there for the rest of his career.

They're airing the match on ABC. Only to Victoria though.

I'd never sit through an entire game of AFL, anyhow. But I'm sure there'll be plenty of highlights across all the media outlets.
