View Full Version : Foreman Vs. Roy Jones/ The Commentator Wars:Episode I
Mr. Violence 12-06-2004, 09:42 PM Who is better for the HBO commentating team. Big George Foreman or Roy Jones Jr. Each brings thier special brand of entertainment and it has Larry Merchant involved. It was hilarious the way Foreman and larry would get into on air arguments, and with Jones sometimes Larry will sneak in a disguised putdown of jones boxing career. Anyway cast your vote lets se who the people like better.
trinidadpr87 12-06-2004, 09:43 PM im going with roy jones.
Dr.Depravity 12-06-2004, 09:50 PM I would go with Roy. I like Foreman also though. Merchant is a dip**** 90 percent of the time. Every once and a while he will ask a good tough question to a fighter, other than that he just gets on my nerves. I cant change the channel fast enough when they do his final thought or whatever.
bchynn 12-06-2004, 09:50 PM I prefer Foreman's boxing commentary over RJJ's. Foreman truly commentated as a person with hands on experience unlike other announcers and commentators. RJJ is a good announcer as well, but he isn't as charismatic as Foreman.
Atwa_66 12-06-2004, 09:53 PM im going with roy jones.
Same here, at least he won't try to promote his grill over the television :)
Tyson'scolon 12-06-2004, 10:03 PM George would say some unbelievable things. My favorite was " in a situation like this, the last thing you want to do is fight back".

....Yeah it's always like "once upon a time when you thought what you thought was what you thought and it turned out not to be what you thought, now that really makes you think blah blah blah".

Oh yeah. he always does that. he'll make some obscure reference to something from the 1940's like "Once upon a time Fred Astaire...blah blah blah. I have to admit it's kind of funny soemtimes. Especially when Merchant will sneak in an underhanded comment. I've seen a couple of times where it looked like a fighter wanted to hit him. Anyway a classic is the Hops vs. Tito fight not just for the fight but also the on air arguing of Foreman and Merchant during that fight. You can tell Foreman got on Merchants nerves, thats what I liked about Foreman.
Memorex 12-06-2004, 10:34 PM big george is my fav he says funny stuff and makes it very entertaining
Mr. Violence 12-06-2004, 10:36 PM big george is my fav he says funny stuff and makes it very entertaining
yeah I miss that guy. all the ridiculous things he would say.
The Fix 12-06-2004, 10:41 PM i like both and they do a good job of giving the fighters point of view. george is funnier but jones is more articulate
restless_438 12-06-2004, 10:58 PM i was pretty impressed by roy's commentary. im biased tho. :D
Neuraxis 12-06-2004, 11:01 PM You can't have a commentator who cheers for fighters during fights. HBO should know better. RJJ and commentating don't mix.
mic573 12-06-2004, 11:16 PM Foreman was always good for a laugh but Jones is the much better commentator in my opinion.
jack_the_rippuh 12-06-2004, 11:18 PM I liked Foreman better..
George was good most of the time, but came up with some real crap. Like asking Tarver to throw the big right hand against RJ.
RJ is a cool cat, maybe to cool
Colonel Jones 12-06-2004, 11:48 PM Big George and Merchant have good chemistry even though you can tell that Formans comments iritate both Merchant and Lampley at times. Entertaining
phallus 12-07-2004, 01:42 AM Big George and Merchant have good chemistry even though you can tell that Formans comments iritate both Merchant and Lampley at times. Entertaining
For entertainment value Big George is better, but as a commentator ROy forces big George to lean back!

yes that is what was entertaining about foreman the way he would get under larry merchant's skin.
trephination 12-07-2004, 08:08 AM I like both guys for different reasons...george is probably more entertaining with some of the comments he comes up with sometimes.
My all time favorite george line
"Besides the two fighters the referee is the most important man in the ring tonight" Classic!
cmason 12-07-2004, 08:19 AM nobody on hbo is much good, all lampley does is look at compubox all night, merchant's ripped to the tits by the 5th round and the guy who does the translation (his name escapes me at the moment)would'nt know spanish if it fell on his head!
n14061981 12-07-2004, 08:31 AM I prefer foreman.
