View Full Version : P4P, lets get real!!
elveiel 06-26-2005, 12:57 AM Let get real about the P4P ratings, i've been saying Mayweather's the number 1 P4P fighter for years and i hope that people will see sense after that brilliant win.
P4P Hopkins would get whipped by Mayweather!!
Manny_P 06-26-2005, 12:58 AM dayum, man read ma ****in sig doos. LOL
SweetScience 06-26-2005, 12:58 AM Beating Gatti proved nothing, even Floyd would agree.
jack_the_rippuh 06-26-2005, 01:00 AM Sweet Science, put back up the Merchant avatar...he's not a douche anymore.
P4P Mayweather would beat Hopkins just based on styles.
JUYJUY 06-26-2005, 01:01 AM Beating Gatti proved nothing, even Floyd would agree.
What did beating Eastman prove?
If Hopkins is better than Mayweather P4P then Hatton will destroy Mayweather, because Hopkins really isn't that good IMO. Hopkins is grossly over-rated and has never been even top 5 lb4lb material IMO, he has beaten 'blown-up' Welterweight's but that's about it.
Mayweather is lb4lb #1, no doubts.
mic573 06-26-2005, 01:02 AM I've been saying Mayweather would beat Hopkins pound 4 pound but usually get people who say that Hopkins is too smart and just as skilled.
Bombardier 06-26-2005, 01:02 AM I think it's time to put Floyd at #1, though we'll have to wait to see what happens in the Taylor fight. Unlike titles P4P should be about raw talent, not legacy, so even if you're just going on youth Floyd should take it now.

20 straight in a fairly respectable weight class has to count for something...
then again...for those who know...floyd is one of those once in a generation fighters...whose just getting started...
if i can say anything...hopkins should be thankful he's not fighting at 140
JUYJUY 06-26-2005, 01:04 AM Maybe Mayweather should jump upto Middleweight to give Hopkins another 'blown-up' little guy to fight, 160 has been empty for 10 years and Hopkins is just old left-overs who stands alone with nobody to fight, he's nothing more than a crumb from the great early 90's era who was nothing in his prime years and not even known.
SweetScience 06-26-2005, 01:10 AM Hopkins has not lost a fight over a decade AND not came close to losing. Floyd beat Gatti...BIG DEAL!! Gatti is not P4P, never will be. All Floyd did was collect a belt which doesn't mean much.
Hopkins beat Eastman, I think Eastman is a better fighter then Gatti. If Hopkins loses to Taylor then Floyd moves up, simple as that.
Btw, thanks Floyd Mayweather Jr for winning me 500 bucks. I guess the saying is true, a sucker IS born everyday.

Hopkins has come close to being stopped plenty of times against mediocre opposition.

This win proves nothing that we didn't already know. Floyd is great and Gatti is not a world class fighter.
This was a sparring session fron day 1 and the fight played out just like evryone who knew what they were talking about said it would.
Hopkins is #1
SweetScience 06-26-2005, 01:15 AM LOL, ok buddy.
Mayweather beat The Great Arturo Gatti. :D

Hopkins is #1
Castillo, Corrales, Gatti, Manfredy, Corley and Chavez makes Mayweather number 1. Hopkins only good win was against Tito, DLH was way above his natural weight class and Roy Jones owned him.
Mayweathers number 1
JUYJUY 06-26-2005, 01:26 AM Hopkins was simply too big and too strong for little Tito so that shouldn't really count.
Manny Steward quote: "The last world-class, natural Middleweight that Hopkins fought was Roy Jones.. and he lost every round."
Bozo_no no 06-26-2005, 01:36 AM What did beating Eastman prove?
It proved that Bernard capped the record for all time middleweight defenses, and at 40 years old, has been defending his title and is undefeated in 10 years.
Floyd is great, but he's new to 140, and hasn't beat an A Class fighter in that division.
Hagler was pound for pound #1 until he lost to Leonard.
Hopkins deserves the spot until he loses, retires, or stops fighting the best in his division.
Currently that's Taylor who he's fighting next.
If he beats Taylor, he retains his spot until he loses or retires.

Dont firget that Floyd didn't look so great in his fights with Chavez, Hernandez and Corley.
DiegoFuego 06-26-2005, 02:46 AM Mayweather is the best fighter in the world right now but to lose the p4p title, you gotta get beat or retire. Hopkins has done neither.

He shouldn't of had it in the first place
Bozo_no no 06-26-2005, 03:07 AM He shouldn't of had it in the first place
Marvin Hagler had it because of his display of longevity and undefeated run as a champion.
No matter who you are, if you win you win the undisputed title and continue to defend it agaisnt everyone available in your devision not ducking anyone, you earn your dues.
It doesn't matter if you don't like his opposition or think he's over hyped, he's a record breaking top middleweight of all time, a sure lock for the hall of fame, and is undefeated in over 12 years in his record breaking reign of Middleweight defences.
He's the top fighter in the sport until he loses, retires, or stops defending against top opponents.
It's really simple. This discussion should be on hold for 2 weeks. If Hopkins beats Taylor, he retains his spot. If he loses Floyd moves up.

I agree, PBF has always been on my #1 P4P
Hopkins has come close to being stopped plenty of times against mediocre opposition.
What the **** are you talking about? The closest he has ever been to being stopped.....was against Echols. And the stoppage would have been the result of Hopkins not wanting to continue with his dislocated shoulder. Even at that, it would have resulted in the disqualification of Anton.

You are the premiere idiot of boxingscene. This post says it all...your knowledge is almost as world class as your boy Hank Wharton.

Roy Jones jr
CH0ZEN 06-26-2005, 04:09 AM Lets be honest here, if Roy Jones jr decides to, after whooping Hopkins, he can stick around the middleweight division and beat up on Bernard until people get sick of seeing it and Hopkins runs off to fight someone else for chump change. Instead Roy moves up and Bernard reigns for years. The truth is, no one has ever beaten Floyd, he hasn't ducked anyone, and he keeps moving up. Just like the formed undisputed P4P King had done before him. How can you dispute that?

The same could be said for Joe Calzaghe, he owns super middle and has done for many years but isnt on most people P4P ranking. Infact Hopkins could step up and fight him, that would be an option for his lack of quality opponents but he keeps turning him down.
You cant take away from Mayweather just because Hopkins hasnt had the opponents. Mayweather didnt have the opponents but went looking for them, because of that he's easily P4P number 1 over Hopkins.

Hello; McFly.
Dude Hopkins has been dominating at this weight class; true. But he inheirited the middleweight division only after Roy left (with an unbeaten track record). True his reign is unreal. And I believe Hopkins showed he still has it by easily beating Oscar. And furthermore Bernard is aging and his best P4P days are behind him so if he does lose to Taylor which I doubt he will, much like Roy Jones jr he will always remain one of boxings greatest champions. I for one am a huge Hopkins fan and don't think he has ducked anyone either. But do not forget that where Bernard has had his ass handed to him, Mayweather has not. And judging on the physical conditioning of Floyd and his mastery of the sweet science, this guy is not only for real, but maybe able to get the kinda respect Sugar Ray Robinson's skill demanded. How good will Floyd become, only time will tell. But time has already told us this guy is the real P4P champion in boxing today.
NiGe2011 06-26-2005, 04:59 AM Eastman is not a better fighter than Gatti!

Howard Eastman is a MUCH better fighter then Gatti. Eastman was definitely worse then Hopkins, but he was a legitimate number one contender. Gatti is barely deserving of a top five ranking in his weight class (if he deserves it all). I have been saying for months upon months that Gatti was going to be completely worked by Floyd! As a matter of fact, I thought Floyd would sweep the fight until finally stopping him in the tenth. And even in that mediocre assessment of Arturo's skills I was giving Gatti too much credit! Gatti did not put up nearly that much fight out there tonight. Now, despite all of this I don't think this means that Floyd should rocket to the top of a pound for pound list. Floyd did what he was supposed to do and took care of business against a much less talented fighter, nothing more and nothing less. Floyd is probably the heir apparent to the pound for pound throne, but right now Hopkins is still on top and deserves his spot. Hopkins has beaten all comers for eleven years and controls the pace of a fight better then anybody else in boxing, up there with the best in boxing history in that regard. Just because Floyd looked spectacular against a glorified club fighter does not mean that he should overtake Bernard... at least not yet.
