I need a new one, my car sprung an oil leak and it is old as hell. So I am looking for a nice cheap (my limit is 5k) reliable car for school.

Anyways, I am currently looking at a 99 Accord LX. It is loaded and has everything in it but I have read mixed reviews about the car. Also it has like 96k miles on the thing, anyone know from personal experience about this car and wish to shed any insight on them? Also would you buy it if it had that many miles? I know Hondas can seem like they can run forever but I just want to be cautious and not get suckered into it.

Depends on how much driving you do, how long you want this car, etc. Just as a rule of thumb for myself, once I have a car that gets to around 150 k, once it breaks down I think its time to get rid of it.

I wouldn't buy a car with 96 k on it if I didn't have to. I'd try for something with 75 k or less. Also, how many owners? All that type of stuff. You gotta wonder, if its just 96 k, why are they getting rid of it?

Whatever you end up getting, try getting something that'll last you until the hydrogen cars start coming out. That's my plan when I get my next car, which I hope to avoid for about 50 k more miles.

Are you gonna have the cash to spring for one of those? I don't think they'll ever be cheap enough to be popular, at least not in the near future. Though maybe there's something I don't know.

I bought a Tercel with 100K on it and it's been running perfectly for a few years now. Had to replace the gas tank but with all the snow we get up here it's brutal on the undercarriage, so stuff like that happens.

How old is this car you're looking at? Might want to make sure the body's in good shape, that can wreck a car even if the engine's fine.

about two months ago i payed 5700 for a used 97' prelude, its got 123,000 miles on it and is in great condition. it runs really good, honda's are probably the best cars if your looking at used cars.

Hondas are extremely reliable. The LX is not fully loaded, the top of the line is the EX model.

I appreciate all of your opinions. Masterdirector, no idea I just came across it last night I was going to the dealership to find out all of the details. I have narrowed it down to 3 types of cars Toyota/Honda/Subaru, I need a car that is reliable and economically sound and light on the wallet. I do a lot of traveling during the summer as well as in the fall and winter months from school and back home. On average I put about 100+ miles a week on a car.

96k miles on a honda is nothing, they seem to last forever
just inspect the car good, make sure it has no oil stains on the enigne block or ground where it is parked at.
when the car is cool, look at the radiator water amke sure it doesnt look dirty
a/c and heater work you should be fine
oh double check the tires too, make sure you need no alingment

The thing is I need it to last me atleast 4 years, I will on average put 12-15k miles on it a year alone. I need a good long term investment.

The lot is asking $5,995 with a before sticker of $7,995. Think if I walked in with $4,500 cash I could drive it off the lot?

frankly no i wouldnt buy a honda from around those years with that many miles. We have a 97 honda odyssey that burns oil like crazy, when it started nearing the 100K miles... lots of stuff started to go bad.

Honda Cars Are Very Reliable, I Just Bought A 03 Accord For My Sister... 96k On That Car Is Nothing. Just Make Sure The Engine Is Good No Oil Leaks Etc... Price Seems A Little High I Would Try To Look For A Privae Seller Get A Better Deal And No Sales Tax...

Hydrogen cars will be so cheap to produce, I'll befriend someone and get a deal somehow. Heck, I'll be a filmmaker so I could even agree to feature a car in my movie if they'll give me one free, or at a real good deal.

TitleBoxing.com sent me a free boxing belt for my movie. This other guy sent me these gloves and mouthpieces. I got to use a ring for free (though the ring I had to use, there's no way in hell I would've paid for that piece of **** ring). People want to help out with movies.

Big oil will never let hydrogen cars edge them out of the auto business...believe it, they will always get in the way somehow. They'll allow them only if like 10 a year are made and they cost half a million dollars retail. As long as the masses still guzzle down their product like cheap booze.

Though like you said once you're big in Hollywood who cares how much things cost  ? Did you ever post your boxing movie, btw?

96K is nothing <------- that's like its teenage years when it comes to Hondas. (though some hondas do have some troubles...nothing is perfect). On the average, the Honda engine is suppose to last you 350K.

The gas crunch finally got me.
I just got rid of my beloved Lincoln Towncar (old man ride) and am in a Honda Civic.
Thinking about putting my lawn mower engine in it to kinda "soup it up".

I wouldn't buy the car it has too many miles on it for a 99" plus from my experience when you buy a used car all you're doing is buying someone else's problem.

I had an Accord for about 5 years. Very dependable. Drove the hell out of it and still got pretty good value whne I traded it in.

Hey spinx I think you should try and get a Jap. car period.
They are all durable so try to find the best deal.
I had a 1987 Nissan Maxima and that **** gave me 350k. and I still sold it.
Honda,Nissan, and Toyota are the way to go if you want something durable.Just try to find out about the cars history if possible all the maintenence records.
