They trash Tyson on the Cotto fight against the PPV, now they trash him against the replay on the Tarver fight.

Pretty unprofessional, if you ask me, not to mention disrespectful to Glen & Antonio on a night they put on a good show...

I agree. I dont understand what the spite over Tyson was. He already claimed he was through "embarrasing the sport", they should just let him go out in peace, without all that jazz.

And like you say, and the eve of the great fight we just saw, howcome larry was stealing the show? Odd.

I just became a Tarver fan, and even more of a Merchant hater.

And why would he even bring it up when Tyson is now retired? I don't get that. Maybe Merchant was well into his second jug of Memphis moonshine.

LOL. He kept looking down at his watch, because I think they must have stopped selling drinks around this time at his favorite oldies club.

Yeah I thought that was a bit odd too. Merchant was definitely on Beale street getting faded before the fight...

That's because he doesn't. That man is only kept around for the tension he creates. If they kept people for boxing knowledge, his ass would be kicked the the curb. Most of us here know more than he does.

Who cares if Merchant thrashed Tyson. Tyson thrashed himself in the first place. All his achievements were just nullified by all the crazy **** he did inside and outside the ring to disrespect the sport. All that being said, I still hope he'll be able to pay his debts, courtesy of the stupid fans in his website who thinks that their money will be used by Tyson to pay his debt. For all I know, Mike's giving them the finger and saying "Suckah!"

You're missing the point. This was on a RIVAL NETWORK telecast after two HBO televised fights and Merchant wanted to talk about a week-old PPV event that was being replayed on the competitor.

Merchant might as well have said, "If you hurry and change the channel, I believe the West coast feed is about to start..."

I don't know, I just want to credit Merchant for being honest and direct. It doesn't matter what network the fight is televised, if it's thrash then it's thrash. C'mon, I've heard him thrash a lot of HBO fights before, get real! His just expressing his honest thoughts, and it ain't about the network competition.

Give Merchant his due credit unlike a lot of ***** commentators out there.

It was inappropriate timing at best, whether you buy what he was saying or not. They just had the second fight of what will be a memorable trilogy and he wants to close the show talking about Mike Tyson. That's a slap in the face to the four competitors on the broadcast.

He was giving his last sentiments on Tyson's career. Nothing wrong with that. What other forum does he have to do that?

Tyson hasn't been an HBO fighter in years. If Larry wants to throw jabs at Showtime by more or less plugging their replay, he didn't do it effectively.

What's next - after a memorable Mayweather-Gatti, Larry reflects on the James Toney steroid issue?

I believe the only reason they (he) did this coverage on Tyson and Cotto...

They may assume that not everyone ordered the fight and not everyone has the SHO.., or even miss the replay as they were watching Tarver /Johnson thus as a boxing coverage, they keep the fans up to date, that is with the events that occur on the other network(s)

Come on, how many boxing fans watch HBO fights? Millions..
How many of them follow up on news and sites like this... maybe 10% Most just watch it live for the excitement and don't really follow with the media

Tyson was and is still a hugely popular fight with the casual boxing fan. I have seen Teddy Atlas comment on past Tyson fights MANY times on ESPN even though Tyson never fought on that network. No one complains about that.

Who really cares if Merchant ended the broadcast with the Tyson bit? As someone said, at least Merchant has the backbone to say what's on his mind.

By the way, everything he said about Mike was true.

Some of what he said was true, but overall I think he sounded like a guy who just wanted to kick Tyson while he is down.

Merchant will say that Tyson's face if he has a chance. I still can't believe most people still don't know Larry Merchant. I'm not sure if it's really him or the alcohol talking but he's never had any problems saying **** to any fighter's face. Remember Lewis-Klitschko, he basically told Lewis in front of him, you were ****ty tonight, and then Lewis tried to grab the mic from Larry. And how Larry embarrasses Roy Jones everytime duuring their telecasts. Oh, Merchant's got backbone alright.

larry merchant has a slow speech and a slow mind but hes not retarded, although there might be evidence that he is. larry merchant and the whole HBO commentary team except for maybe roy jones and emmanuel steward, are biased and opinionated. they insult certain fighters, even fighters they dont work with, they horribly score fights, and they even get into arguements with each other during certain fights.

ignore larry merchant, he should be fired.

Roy Jones is biased too, especially when it comes to his buddies. I thought he was going jump into the ring and make out with Winky during the Trinidad fight...

I would rather have a guy that stirs up the pot than a bunch of zombies. I always liked Cosell and his ability to "tell it like it is!" I realized it was just his opinion and agree or disagree he made me smile. Larry makes me smile too...sometimes unintentionally.
I just dislike two types....the guys like Jim Grey who come off like weasels and the guys like Roy who can barely speak coherently.

Well Roy knows what hes talking about better than Larry. During the Ike Quartey fight Larry was like Phillips is tired he doesnt have pop anymore and Jones said hes still dangerous. He said it a couple times and right after he said it Quartey got knocked down. Jones is a good comentator because knows whats happening in the ring.

Jones is a great commentator and he knows boxing like the back of his hand but he needs to stop staring at the camera with that silly smile on his face. That **** freaks me out!

I find Jones accent hard to understand George Foreman was much better and Tyson forget it. Commenetating that is.

I think Merchant was just trying to get a jab in on Shotime. Probably because they have had better fights than HBO recently. Tyson being an exception.
