WBC announces its “All Africa World Championships”
December 4, 2004
Amongst the many projects of the World Boxing Council for 2005, one of them stands out for its important implications: the brand new “All Africa World Championships”.
These titles could be inaugurated with the fight between ex world superfeather champ Floyd Mayweather, of USA, and Puerto Rican Henry Bruseles on January 22.
This bout will be also a final elimination to find the official challenger to the current world superlight champion, Canadian Arturo Gatti.
Mayweather is 27 and undefeated in 32 bouts (21 by KO); Bruseles is 24 and with 21 wins (13 by KO), 2 defeats and 1 tie.
The WBC deems that the new championships will be considered among the most popular titles by all fans world-wide, given the fact that nowadays bright fighters of African descent are dominating the boxing scene on every continent.
Participants in these championships could be selected among boxers of African descent, regardless of where they were born or live. Boxers living in Africa, regardless of their race will also be included.
Had such titles existed in the past, many bright boxers of African descent would have participated, like Jack Johnson, Joe Gans, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, and some of the current champions and world rated fighters like Bernard Hopkins, Ronald Wright and Cory Spinks, among others.
Current world champions of African descent will be excluded from these titles in order to give opportunities to promising prospects.
I do not understand the reasoning behind this title and only makes more confusion among "who is who" and any fighter with respect and a high standard of ethics, would throw this title in a burning trash can!
THUMBS DOWN WBC....YOU LOST MY RESPECT!
pinaldino 12-05-2004, 01:03 PM That's a really disgusting stuff..that's making titles for black people and other for whites. and who's gonna decide who's from african decsent and who's not anyway? just the color of the skin? pffff
shame on WBC
Nasty Handspeed 12-05-2004, 01:09 PM Did you know back in Jack Johnsons day the whites made a search for the White Heavyweight Championship of the world cuz they were so disgusted that Jack Johnson was Champ. That is where the term "Great White Hope" originated from. Look it up in boxing history you'll see this is a FACT. The thing is I dont hear none of you complaining about that now do I.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 12-05-2004, 01:57 PM Isnt that just like the Mexican championships though?

We do live in 2004 now you know....
RobbieD 12-05-2004, 06:26 PM Yeah we need more belts in boxing like we need a hole in the head.
Eyeh8you 12-05-2004, 06:51 PM So can Afrikaners like Sanders and Botha go for the belt or is it only black africans? What about the White, arab, and Coloreds in africa?
Atwa_66 12-05-2004, 06:54 PM Thats insane....shame on the WBC
tri4ben2 12-05-2004, 07:04 PM I don't mean to offend anyone here, but that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.
Basically what you are getting is another fringe belt like the NABF or WBU that has no meaning.
If you look at the ring magazine champions, there is a pretty fair distribution.
Black- Tarver, Hopkins, Spinks, Wright (I think he is black)
White- Klitscko and Tszyu
Latino- Castillo, Morales / Barerra and Most of the small weight classes.
Asian- Pacaiou, I think there is more in the light weight classes.
I think it is unncessary to have a belt that excludes black people and others that are technically african, like Sanders and Both like Eye8you said.
spinksjinx 12-05-2004, 09:45 PM To further update on this matter:
In addition to the WBC's 'All African World Championship,' which is for "African descendants who live all over the world," WBC President Jose Sulaiman has announced plans to create an 'All Asian World Championship,' and an 'All Latin American World Championship.' "These champonships would be created with the support and approval of all of the national boxing federations in the corresponding areas," stated Sulaiman.
This is ridiculous and I hope no fighter accepts these, besides I thought thats what the wbc continentals belts were for...My lord
It would be different if they were like "ok these belts cant leave these countries type deal" but they are playing the race card in saying that only "insert ethnic background here" can hold these championships....
Shame on you WBC...
IBF gets my nod as the most credible at this point.
Im anxious to see how the fighters respond to this.

Well you know since Vitali is the recognized WBC champ no need for that one....They must be pretty confident that he will be holding it for a long time, because tell me what african descent fighter will want to hold an "african title" if Danny Williams is champion???
It doesnt make sense to me at ALL!
This whole thing is just absurd.
Eyeh8you 12-05-2004, 10:52 PM yeah this i pretty bad. Cause one Black champ will say hes the best but the Asian or Hispanic who thinks hes better can't challenge for it! And the white guy is just plan screwed cause there is no belt for him? This is absolutely fukin retarded and unfair. But oh well thats life I suppose :(

Questions:
1. Would Jews count as Africans?
2. Would Arabs from Northern Africa count as Africans?
3. Would Corrie Sanders count as African?
He really is a South African.
Conclusions:
1. WBC screwed up

sorry, if I did
Hudson_Hawk 12-05-2004, 11:50 PM This is nothing more than MONEY again. WBC is getting restless,
Mr. Violence 12-06-2004, 12:32 AM it is sad that in this day and age racism still exist, we should all look past our differences. Too bad the wbc is doing this.
bchynn 12-06-2004, 12:35 AM The belt wouldn't promote racial segregation, more like regional opportunities. There are white africans and chinese africans in africa. It's not limited to blacks. This actually might make it easier for regional boxers to get WORLD title shots by divided the best boxers per region, then perhaps having a tourny. I think too many people are being presumptuous regarding the objective behind this regional title. I will wait a while before providing my own opinion.
jabsRstiff 12-06-2004, 07:20 AM "I lost respect for the WBC."
Spinks...
You respected these pieces of **** up until this point ?

Is there an African title equivalent to the European, North American, etc titles? If there is then there would seem little point in this.

What is wrong with Sulaiman? Too many belts titles . . . generating money?
spinksjinx 12-06-2004, 08:16 AM bchynn-What do you think the continental titles are for????
Jabsrstiff-Out of the other organizations I have respected the wbc most, I mean the IBO did give roy jones their belt so he can come to the ring first...Ok...However I guess the WBC did it themselves with Roy and that caused their bankruptcy....Belts dont mean **** anymore....Peoples champions is where its at.....
bchynn 12-06-2004, 05:53 PM I don't know of any African belts that are as regarded as European and North American titles. Are there?
