TAMPA - There was a time when the only way St. Petersburg middleweight Winky Wright could see Oscar De La Hoya in the ring would be on television.

That could change very soon.

Gary Shaw, Wright's promoter, is currently negotiating a deal with De La Hoya's representatives for a proposed fight in November. Wright already received a contract proposal from De La Hoya that was rejected.

Shaw would not say how much was offered, but sources say it was $6 million, which is only $1 million more than what Wright received to defeat Felix `Tito' Trinidad last month.

Shaw said he expects a contract to be finalized within 30 days.

``That's the fight in front of us. We're in the beginning stages right now, but he [De La Hoya] wants to fight Winky and Winky wants to fight him,'' Shaw said. ``I can't predict anything because it's boxing, but I'm always confident we'll be able to make a deal.''

Wright's other possibility was to fight Bernard Hopkins, who will face Jermain Taylor on July 16 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. However, Hopkins has shown little interest in fighting Wright and is more interested in facing Tampa light heavyweight Antonio Tarver, or Roy Jones Jr., in the future.

``I would love to fight Oscar. I would love to fight Bernard, too, but there is more money in fighting Oscar,'' Wright said. ``I want to fight best fighters of our era and Oscar is one of the best. Once I beat them, I can say I beat all of the best fighters in my era.''

The most intriguing part of these negotiations is that De La Hoya severed ties with promoter Bob Arum for a second time last year, but his former promoter said he is contractually owed one more fight - this one. Shaw declined to say if he was negotiating with Arum or Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya's promotional company.

If the fight becomes finalized, it would be the biggest of Wright's career.

Wright (49-3) gained popularity by defeating `Sugar' Shane Mosley twice in 2004. Those wins gave Wright the opportunity to fight Trinidad, who he dominated and defeated by unanimous decision. Now Wright is one of the biggest names in boxing.

``Everything is great. This has been a long time coming. People used to give me a little praise, but now that it has been defined how good I am, I finally am getting the love and it's cool,'' Wright said.

I would pay to see this fightin a second...sure it will be a chess match but a chess match that I would not miss for anything.\

Wright is easily the favorite in this fight, Oscar will need to figure out how to dodge that jab but anyone who thinks this is a cake walk for Winky is either high or Puerto Rican.

Oscar would win rounds against Winky there is no doubt...can he fight for 12 rounds anymore...I dont know?

One thing is for sure the fight will still be on the table going into the championship rounds unlike his last fight where it was over in about the 4th or 5th.

This would be a huge fight to win for Oscar...he could distance himself from his losses to Tito and Shane by beating a guy that dominated both of them...as much as I repsect Oscar I just dont know if he is a figter he used to be...he has the skills to be competitive with anyone but that is not good enough. Fighting once every year and a half may not be good enough to be ready for a guy as polished and as confident as Winky.

Could make for an interesting fight, I hope it happens. Winky deserves another big match after his last performance, just hope this one is a little less one sided and a little more exciting.

Does Oscar like losing?

This better be at 154 for him to stand a chance. At 160 Winky will jab him until he's literally blue in the face.

If I were Winky Wright I'd be doing EVERYTHING in my power to get this fight signed. I'd take the small cut, I'd let Oscar pick the gloves/ring size/etc...because it doesn't really matter, he'll make more money off this than any other fight he's been in anyway and I don't see any way that he can lose.

I am just joking around...I know how the people of Puerto Rico feel about Oscar...they hate him...I have a couple of close freinds that are PR's and we have a lot of fun with each other over the Oscar/Tito rivalry...they hate my guy and I hate there guy...but

I understand what TIto has meant for this sport and in that regard he is one of my favorites...

Did not mean to offend you my personality is such that I have to throw in a jab every once in a while. It is just my nature.

gotta give oscar credit for wanting to take the hardest fights. winky is not a ko puncher so i dont think that will bother dlh. if oscar doesnt come in the ring looking like a twinkie and comes in the ring in tip top shape, he will have the movement to get away from that jab and use is own. i dont think it will be a cake walk for winky buteiter way its goin to be a decision for some1.

Winky Wright is a great boxer and it would be a good matchup I truly believe and YES I have heard this fight is defintley at 154. Oscar took him self off the card for September 17th to fully train for a fight in November, I had not heard who he was fighting but I heard he was dropping to Jr.Middleweight. So I occording to this thread, Winky could be that guy

Im not sure Wright is everything we make him out to be . Mosley and Trinidad were both completley shot when he fought them , however Trinidad could never beat him just based on Technicelity . I scored the second Mosley fight even so I think Oscar somehow finds away to beat his body and make him fight . Thats if De lahoya still truely has it in him to war .

Cmon man, you obviously know ****!

How can you be embarrassed worse than Tito, he lost every ****ing round...he would have been better served to get caught cold in the first and never wake up than to show the world how badly he can be exposed technically.

Oscar has never been embarrassed and if anything he will be leading coming down the stretch against Winky...if he can hold on is another story.

Every fight Oscar has been in he has gone into the championship rounds ahead...with the exception of Nard...hell maybe he is not as great as I think he is but the guy for 8 rounds is as good a fighter as I have seen.

Embarrassed worse than Tito, sorry dip**** not possible.

154 I give oscar a decent chance, would be good to see it at 147 but I don't think wink will come down that far, oscar def. wins that one though.

And DLH gave tito a boxing lesson, everybody who knows anything about boxing knows that.

Winky is the truth, I admit Mosley shouldnt have been at 154, but shot? thats taking too much credit away from Winky..... he was just the Bernard Hopkins of the 154 division and Mosley was the DHL of the 160 division they both shouldnt have been there. The Tito comment is funny cause he would of gotten beat by any pure boxer just like he always had......DHL(i dont care what the scorecards read) Hopkins and Winky. I dont know if DHL can beat Winky but he can definitley compete, he is P4P the best boxer of the last 10 years! maybe more. Oh yeah and he beat Mosley in the second fight.

I give Oscar a chance..dont know how much he has left in him..i just question his desire..i think he still has the skills but he doesnt train as hard as he used to..thus..his performances have suffered. Haha, it was a draw(tho DLH runing lost it in my eyes), you gotta take your eyes off DLH's crotch, you might of caught Trinidad trading jabs, not to mention DLH quit for some reason in the last RD's, now Mexicans like you say he would lose to any boxer, well he went undefeated for over 40, facing all kinds of boxers, nobody can change that.

tito vs dlh ----- it was a draw (dlh was winning until he gave those last rounds)

if dlh wins vs wright they are definetly going to make dlh vs trinidad 2 where i pick dlh

Im from Puerto Rico and Tito is a great fighter but dlh simply outclasses him by far. I think Tito is overated. Miguel Cotto is also overated, *cough* Corley *cough*. I root for both but I think they are overrated :p

You have to respect Oscar for taking this fight. I guess 154 isn't "Make Winky Wait." Wright by UD, but I'll probably still pay to see if DLH has anything left.

Wright could then move back up to 160 and take on Taylor/Hopkins.

Is it possible at all that DLH makes up for splitting off the Barrera Sept. PPV by putting Hopkins' next match on this one with him?

I think it's a great idea. It also sets up Wright-Hopkins perfectly if they both win that night...unless BHop is fighting at 175 vs. Johnson or Tarver, then I doubt he'd go back down.

Unlikely, I know, since DLH vs. Cosme Rivera would probably sell well enough without a strong co-feature like Hopkins-Tarver or Hopkins-Johnson. But I can dream...I'd pay 80 bucks for DLH-Wright and Hopkins-Johnson/Tarver.

I think if they fight at 150 Oscar has a good chance. If oscar comes in and throws a bunch of combinations here and there (even if they dont all connect) and he keeps moving around the ring the judges would give him the W.
