View Full Version : Are Sanctioning Bodies Becoming Irrelevant?
fist-of-fury 12-04-2004, 11:58 PM Gone is the day when only one fighter is universally recognized as world champion. Now you have three, four (even five!) champions of a division recognized by different bodies. Even if there is a unification bout, the "unified champion" will have to surrender one or two of his belts as he could not possibly fight two or three mandatory challengers at the same time or within a very short span of time. When he surrenders or is stripped of his titles, multiple champions in his division occurs again.

The boxing world is one big ball of confusion!! So, what do you think? Have sanctioning bodies become irrelevant? Is a single superbody possible?
psychopath 12-05-2004, 12:52 AM For those who are really boxing fans yes it is irrelevant. Why? Because Sanctioning bodies are just for sanctioning fees! :D
There's only one WORLD in which we live in . . . how many so called "WORLD CHAMPIONS" do we have? :p It's going to be more appropriate if we will address them as title holders not world champions.
foremanfan 12-07-2004, 06:52 PM Sanctioning bodies are part of what has spoilt boxing. Television companies found that fights were more marketable if they have got some of so called title involved hence the need for more bouts. But if fighters were not as protected as they have become over recent years we would see the best prospects fighting one another these days it seems to be all abou building up the undefeated recold as easily as possible very few risks and then a title shot.
SacTown1 12-07-2004, 07:39 PM The Ring Magazine belt is the one that matters, kudos to Tarver and Johnson for realizing this fact and trashing their worthless belts in order to create the true Light Heavyweight Championship fight! These guys got it right, and so too should each "champion" in each division. Vitali should toss the WBC belt in the trash, just like Riddick Bowe did, and keep the Ring magazine belt. As should Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright, Cory Spinks, Kostya Tszyu, Manny Pacquaio, and any other Ring champion who still pays ridiculous sanctioning fees that aren't necessary in order to have the Ring strap. SOmebody's gotta step up to the microphone and let the public know that the Ring belt is what counts and that every other belt should be thrown in the dumpster. - SacTown1
foremanfan 12-07-2004, 07:45 PM I think it was the ring that used to recognise Spinks as the champion even though Tyson had the WBC,WBA and IBF belts. I always respected them for that.

Well said! I think the Ring Magazine title (People's Champion) is the closest we have today to a Boxing Superbody.
Brotherfromthehoods 12-08-2004, 07:08 PM yeh, seems like theres a new one every year
JL FightFan 03-04-2009, 04:04 PM to most posters here, Yes.
Ch@mpBox@PR 03-04-2009, 04:16 PM I dont mind the 4 major belts, WBO,WBC,WBA,IBF(the WBO is the better of the 4, in terms of rankings and champions, their champions almost all time are the ones recognized as the division best). We should have the 4 belts, because even tho theres no clear champion, we have somewhat have a idea of the best fighters in the division and unification bouts are more marketale. And he ring title as much as people repects it, Its now own by a promoter so, I dont give it that much respect anymore, even tho that their divisional rankings are very accurate.
But I agree that all this new scationing bodies, the IBO,IBA IBC, and all e rigional belts like the NABO, and all this latin,Asina north america, continentall, ect, ect, ect cahmpionships have to go for good. They are makeing bocing look like WWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
timbatron 03-04-2009, 04:23 PM The only belt I care about is The Ring belt. Other than that, I only want to see top guys fight each other. I couldn't care less about belts.
JL FightFan 03-04-2009, 04:26 PM like the World TV Title
brently1979 03-04-2009, 04:26 PM I like the idea of the Ring Belt, but I don't like the idea that Golden Boy own the Ring Magazine.
Well I guess it's a bit like Don King owning the WBC.
andrewcuff 03-04-2009, 04:45 PM Yep. Lineal/Ring Champions only!
