jack_the_rippuh 06-12-2005, 11:30 PM ..I hope you're happy now. You've hated Tyson since he first decided to lace them up and now he's finished..
..I just have to say that I hope you're happy. You won't hear any other stuff about Tyson cleaning out the division from me anymore.
Maybe now that he's gone you can give him the props that he deserves.
....What exactly does he deserve "props" for? Snatchin some ass?? Beating up old women? Smakin his wife around? Biting opponents? Trying to break a fellow boxers arm twice? Being an inarticulate animal? If you were more specific perhaps jabs could answer. :)
jack_the_rippuh 06-12-2005, 11:39 PM For single handedly reviving boxing, for going down as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, and probably the second or third greatest of recent time [Holyfield, Lewis (depends on how you see it.)]..
Slipx 06-12-2005, 11:53 PM tyson isnt an all time great
jack_the_rippuh 06-12-2005, 11:54 PM He beat some all time greats, so why wouldn't he beat an all-time great?

As much as i dont think tyson is up there with the great heavyweights, his moral character should not come into play here.
Chico, Mayweather - women hitters
Bhop, McCline - served years for robbery
i know thats a short, ****ty list, but it goes on and on... i must goto bed now.
jack_the_rippuh 06-13-2005, 12:01 AM Good point, Drez..
Carlos Monzon, a freaking murder is viewed as one of the best Middleweights of all time.

I seriously admire Tyson and have massive respect for him. But you see, Tyson only looked good because he was fighting much lesser fighters, and that's what you see on all his knockout videos, him fighting B and C fighters! His greatest victories were against shot fighters that were old and out of their primes, and if you consider a fighter great for beating Berbick and Bruno decisively, I shake my head and wonder why..In my opinion, for a fighter to be great, he has to defeat a legendery fighter, who has had legendary fights... who is in his prime.. and that's something Tyson never did! Some say his greatest victory was against Larry Holmes, but again, Holmes was out of his prime when they fought.
Now, having said all that, I think Tyson had the physical attributes to be one of the greatest of all time, however he didn't have it all together mentally. He loved the idea of enjoying his success, however; he hated the road to greatness. After Cus D'Amato passed away, and he fired Kevin Rooney, he developed some serious motivational problems; and he is not an adaptable fighter at all, in fact, if you'll notice...every single time Mike Tyson has gone up against a fighter with a good jab, he's been absolutely dominated by the jab. Buster Douglas. Lennox Lewis. Danny Williams. Some guys didn't even need a jab to beat down Tyson, such as the great Evander Holyfield (now, that's a great fighter, I might add.), all Evander needed was to force his will upon the simple minded Tyson for him to throw in his cards and give up subliminally, by biting the poor guys ear. And let's not talk about him getting floored multiple times by Greg Page whilst sparring in Tokyo. You can say he was partying all night all you want- the fact is, great fighters don't get floored multiple times in one session by their sparring partners. Mediocre-good fighters do, not the great ones.
however, prime tyson was 1 of the greatest finishers..

Michael Spinks was not old when he fought Mike Tyson...
spinksjinx 06-13-2005, 02:00 PM Ahh come the F*** on, You are telling me the talent Mike Tyson possessed and the cleaning out of the division and being the highest paid boxer and breaking all kinds of records isnt a great career? Sure Tyson's career ended in 1990 but if he retired after the Buster loss people would be beating to a different beat of the drum. I am in noway a huge Tyson fan but what he brought to the sport cant be ignored.
Berbick
Smith
Thomas
Tucker
Tubbs
Holmes
Spinks
Bruno
Ruddock
Seldon
Tyson dismantled these guys, these are the best the division had to offer when Tyson was in his prime. You cant hate on Mike because the opposition was lacking. Tyson made the current champions look like Roy Jones opponents. Tyson cant help it that he came around when the division was lacking. Same goes when the next big heavyweight comes and the division is lacking like it is now.

Wasn't Spinks close to his prime when he fought Mike Tyson...
I think he was in his prim
The fact remains that Mike is the youngest man ever to hold the title, for this fact and this fact alonge you have to give him serious credit-in my mind he was great for a period of time and this record is what solidifies it in my mind.
Ask yourself this question...Do you think someone will come along that will break his record of youngest ever?
If the answer is no then you should realize how damn special he was however short it may have been the man was still special.

Yes Michael was still in his prime and it was his 3rd defense after beating Holmes.
Tha Greatest 06-13-2005, 02:06 PM Yes Michael was still in his prime and it was his 3rd defense after beating Holmes.
Ya exactly
People say Spinks was old cuz Tyson knocked him out in round 1..
Tyson just made him look old, and Spinks was a REALLY good heavyweight...damn now that I think of it I really underrated Mike Tyson..
jabsRstiff 06-13-2005, 02:11 PM Mike Tyson was as exciting a fighter as has ever been in the ring.
I vividly remember the days when he first really came into the world's eyes...& it was GREAT time for boxing.
In an era of fat-f*ck Ali-wannabes (Larry Holmes, was a great fighter.....he's not included).....here comes a pure force.
No robe...no socks....& NO BULL****. His combination of power & speed will never be matched in the heavyweight division again.
He was an absolute phenom. He was also a phenom who fought all the time. Couldn't ask for more out of a heavyweight champ...or any champ for that matter.
But.....he was NEVER unbeatable. He always had limitations. I always thought he'd lose if another heavyweight, with skills & size, would just come in & fight his fight....instead of being terrified. As his opposition became tougher, I could see how frustrated he could get....& I saw how he could be beaten.
His fight with Douglas proved me right.
But......I was annoyed by all of the excuse-makers after that fight. I'm STILL annoyed by all of his whacked fans & their delusional, comic book hero views of the guy.
It wasn't Mike Tyson I wanted to see whacked...it was those fans.
As great as Tyson was for the sport, throughout the mid-late 80's....he was that damaging to it in subsequent years.

To say Spinks was old just shows how uneducated people are in there facts. Michael was in his prime and was regarded as the real champion at the time.
I believe that is why it was so devastating when Mike knocked him out cold. Spinks was one hell of a fighter and probably one of the best in that era. While he wasnt a true heavyweight he could fight them for sure. Tyson beat a great fighter in Spinks and nothing should be taken away from that.

Yup, I agree with you...
I am not much of a tyson fan myself...
His weakness was guys with heart...Buster beat him fair and square, same with Holyfield, and Lewis, and McBride...
but in the Williams fight if his knee didn't blow out, I think he would've KO'd Williams

Some problems.....
Spinks had become an inactive fighter leading up to the Tyson fight.
3 defenses in almost three years.....& a year out before facing Tyson. That's not good.
He was also absolutely terrified, which locked down his abilities & made every Tyson punch that much more damaging.
I was more impressed with tyson's wins over Biggs, Berbick, & Pinklon Thomas

Ya
Spinks wasnt in his TOP prime but he wasn't in his worse either
You just gotta show heart and you can beat Mike Tyson
(also a decent chin)
i was a huge tyson fan in his early days, but i too got really annoyed by all the idiots in the past year clamoring that he was going to unify the divsion... the writing was on the wall for any NORMAL fan to see, but the nutlickers couldn't.. prior to losing to mcbride, mike was 2-2 in the last 5 YEARS, he was finished, it isnt 1987 anymore....
now unlike alot of people, i dont hold this lost against him or his career... just like i dont for holy and his recent losses.... they're old and have been washed up years, these losses dont really mean anything...

Because Spinks was inactive you cant really count that against Tysons win. As you said it surely isnt good but I still dont think you can discredit Tyson with that. I mean Spinks was the linear champ and the man to beat.
With Spinks being so petrified just adds to the glamour of what Tyson was about. That is appealing in itself because Spinks stood up to the giant and conquered against Holmes and for Tyson to intimidate him that much says something I believe.
But the fights you speak of that you were more impressed with I agree to an extent. But the Spinks fight is the most significant in my view. Spinks wasnt a pushover not even for the inactivity. An active Spinks still wouldnt have lasted against Tyson that night.
Spinks also knew his time was up and rightfully so by retiring right after.
jack_the_rippuh 06-13-2005, 02:58 PM Once the unbeaten record was gone so was his will to go on.

Tyson from 1985-1990, was great there is no disputing that. And you even have to give him credit for winning two titles coming out of jail. Holmes and Spinks were great wins...
