Anderson Silva's got his next opponent. UFC president Dana White announced on ESPN's "Rome is Burning" that Silva will defend his UFC middleweight title this summer against Chael Sonnen. White dropped a real bombshell when he said Silva could be fired or cut from the promotion if he doesn't give his all in his fight with Sonnen.

Silva has been a punching bag for mixed martial arts fans since his bizarre win over Demain Maia on Saturday at UFC 112. Silva mocked, danced and chided Maia over the course of an excruciating five-round decision. That prompted White to walk away from the Octagon following the fourth round and toss Silva's UFC middleweight title belt at Silva's manager, Ed Soares, saying, "you give him the belt!" Yahoo! Sports MMA writer Kevin Iole said Silva made a mockery of the sport.

During the conversation with Rome, White said repeatedly that Silva may have had a mental breakdown in the fight. It's the only way he can explain what Silva did in the cage. That's all fine and dandy but White also said he was embarrassed, would make sure it doesn't happen again. He also said he wanted to make it up to the fans.

White told Rome that Silva will be cut from the promotion if he fights with the same style (2:30 mark).

"There's nothing that I can really do to him financially. He's contracted to get paid and he gets paid. It's one of those unfortunate things that happens," then White got animated and started pointing at the camera (3:20 mark).

"If this ever acts like that again in the ring I will cut him. I don't care if he's the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. I don't care if he's the middleweight champion. I will cut him, absolutely."
How outrageous is White's statement? Could he and should he cut a guy like Silva? What if he successfully defends his title again? A win over Sonnen would make it 12-0 in the UFC.

Sonnen may not be able to beat Silva but he should push the pace and make for a helluva lead up to the fight. Since the middle of 2009, he's been burying Silva in interviews. Check out this prefight conversation before UFC 109 (1:50 mark).
Sonnen guaranteed a verbal beating before the fight. He also had some choice words for Soares as well.

I know this is MMA and all.

But I find it interesting that White would cut his best fighter if he gave a less then entertaining performance.

Should boxing promoters have the same mindset?

its a joke. sure the guy goofed off and didnt really fight, but he still dominated the fight. That should be rewarded, not condemned.

Its not his fault that his opponent was SO incompentant that he couldnt do anything about Silvas goofing.

Dana White is the one at fault for ever even creating the fight if it was such a huge mismatch.

Now, if Silva had done all that in a losing effort, he should be punished. If he showed up and didnt fight and just lost the fight intentially he should be punished. Not if he dominates the fight SO thoroughly that he is able to fool around.

Dana White is a joke and he runs the UFC like an Broadway Show instead of a SPORT like it should be

To a certain extent, but Boxing is already feeling the fall out from putting on boring fights. We gain and lose fans like Ricky Hatton does with his weight.

Naw f*ck that how can you really critisize Silva?... How about Dana White produce an opponent for him that can actually do something about Silva's horsing around... If you don't like his style then do something about it

White is a *****. He turns his back on his best fighter because of one performance.

dana white speaks truth

Isnt what Danny White doing considerd fight fixing????

I mean whats next?? Fighters should throw more high kicks so you ufc can look like a jackei chan movie???

Funny all these freaking wrestlers take there opponents down and MOLEST them for like 15 minutes and no one *****es about them but god forbids should anderson silva use AWESOME footwork and evasiveness then he should get cut

Edit: If dana doesnt like the performance he sould hire the next contender a decent boxing coach and not throw loopy punches

He won't unless he wants to make the sport look extremely unprofessional. MMA seems to be going to the direction where the top fighters take few chances and no longer put on exciting brawls like they used to. The UFC has to deal with it.

this link might help u guys. why silva acted that way

If he didn't have such a **** opponent this wouldn't have happened. What the **** is Chael Sonnen gonna do to Anderson Silva? Give him St. Pierre or shut the hell up.

I do like that theory that he is doing it on purpose to face Roy Jones though. Dana was a dick for blocking that fight.

if i was dana white of course i can cut him off why? who is there to fight him that would entertain the fans? heck if i was anderson silva i'd lose interest in fighting too. all the guys silva is fighting right now are crap. the only meaningful fight for him would be rua or machida. but we know he won't fight machida for some brotherly love reasons. jackson would be nice or rashad but i dunno if both those guys would fight him. so u know fawk it there's nothing left for silva anyway. so what's the point?
