View Full Version : How come lefties have no power?

Why is that? Some lefties, like Jirov and Judah, have decent power, but most seem to be in the mold of Byrd, Spinx, Camacho, Whitaker, Spadafora, Mitchell etc, etc, and other lefties who dominate with skill and technique, but lack punching power.

Lefties? . . . I really don't know about this . . . but the way I look at it both some right handers and lefties have no power :D it's just that there are a lot more of right handers from the lefties , , , don't you think so? ;)

Hagler had power, but who cares.

I forgot about the Pacman. He can crack. But surely you must agree that a much bigger percentage of lefties fall into the "cutiepie' catagory than do righties

i heard that hagler was a right handed boxer who fought southpaw and so was pernal whitaker.I tend to do that when i box, i feel way more confertable I don't have the same power, so i switch.

Marco Antonio Barrera's power is pretty decent as well.

There aren't many power punching southpaws because, well, there aren't many southpaws period. However, there have been many lefties with devastating power...

Khaosai Galaxy
Naseem Hamed
Jose Luis Ramirez
Marvin Hagler
Michael Moorer...at 175

Corry Sanders has devastating power!!! I think that the thing about most lefthanded fighters being true righthanded fighters is pretty accurate... Well I guess not cause Tyson was a converted southpaw!!! ;)

Well because ther eisent so many southpows.

Looks like people forgets about Corrie Sanders he`s a southpow and he got devestating power.

Good question. Only a hand full of southpaw fightets have power, a vast majority are very slick fighters!

It pays to be a tricky when your a southpaw, most southpaws i know work a lot more on slick skills than power so they can take full advantage of stance.

I switch hit and i can punch either way, its not just me saying that, my coach is very impressed with my power in either stance and either hand, so i dont think there is any real reason for southpaws to be weaker, other than the way they train.

You only have to look at pacman to see how hard some southpaws can punch.

Calzaghe has decent power for a southpaw.

There are plenty of powerful southpaws. A lot of them use Southpaws are neither more nor less powerful than right handers, at least not on average. The difference is in the focus. The minute they step into the ring they have a natural advantage, becuse they're harder for a right hander to hit than another right hander. They have this natural awkwardness which they exentuate by boxing well. Look at Vassiliy Jirov. As an amateur, he was a great boxer. After he turned pro he decieded to be all puncher. All he did was change the focuz of his training.

Who do you think has a harder punch Corrie Sanders or Tyson? Tyson's looks harder because of the way he throws it but I have seen Sanders rock opponents head's back with his left.

As far as Pernell Whitaker goes..Of his few knock-outs and knock-downs a couple of them came from one-punchers..

I am going to go with Sanders. I have heard several fighters admit that Sanders was the hardest puncher they have ever fought or sparred with. It's too bad his stamina is probabably the worst in the division.

Casamayor does have very good power and yeah he is a southpaw and a tough one as well. Just ask Corrales why he don't want to give Casamayor a rubbermatch.

if corries sanders trained harder and wasn't lazy he could be the best heavyweight out there, also I believe that Antonio tarver has really good power for a left hander hell he KO'D ROY JONES, HES PRETTY POWERFUL.

Yep!...I wish he would give him a rubbermatch. Now that Gossen has already spoiled the 2nd fight by telling Corrales everything he could ever wanna know about Joel it's time to see if Joel has (or can) make the necessary adjustments...I truly believe that Joel is more than good enough to beat Corrales! ;)

You think that Corrales might move up in weight to fight casamayor or he might stay down and fight barrera or a morlaes or even pac man? where do u think the money lies, ha like my dad says "money is the only true talker"

The money is with Morales and Barrera (and Marquez) but thats just my opinion. I think he should fight Casa again before moving anywhere; those 2 have some seriously unfinished business!

Even with Goosen I though Casamayor beat Corrales in the rematch. I think the major adjustment Casamayor needs to make is just to start faster which is probably something he can't really adjust. He has always been a slow starter but he always finishes the fight strong.

well, after you posted this I went looking thru my documents to find my scorecard...and it's awol or something! I cant find the stupid thing but I keep thinking that I may have scored it a draw...but if I gave it to Chico is was by no more than a pt. or two. I'll find that card just cause now it's bugging me!

I think I had it 115-112 for Casamayor with the 10th round knockdown if I remember right. It had to something along those lines because it was close.

Yeah, I think it's total coincidence. There is nothing that would make a southpaw have any less power than a orthodox. The simple thing is as mentioned, less southpaws than orthodox so the amount of power punchers is slimmer. Jim Lampley actually mentioned about this during the Ledwaba fight with Manny. "There are so many southpaw cuties in the lower weight classes, there aren't that many southpaw punchers with muster, Pacquiao is fun to watch." -Jim Lampley.

Right on bro! You hit the nail right in the head with your eyes closed. Ther are so many righties with no power and there are righties whose powers are their left hooks,e.g., Trinidad, Louie Espinosa , et al. The Pacman is now developing his right hook in preparation for JMM.

that is something to think about. keen observation. i'd like to see it scientifically tested to see if indeed something about the southpaw stance distributes power differently.
