View Full Version : Roy Jones, Kostya Tszyu, Ricky Hatton
I was just wondering why do people hate guys like Jones so much and love guys like Tszyu? When Jones lost all the media and alot of fans said that he was overrated and he finally fought someone who could beat him. When Tszyu loses now they say that he may have got old over night or looked flat. Huh?
The reality is that Tszyu looked 10x better off then Jones did. Jones looked old and washed up. He looked that way even in the first Tarver fight.
I didnt see any difference from this Tszyu and his other fights. The difference is he fought a guy who was better. Tszyu KO Mitchell and Judah early(both slick southpaws) but against his last 3 right handers he didnt look special at all. He went the distance with Urkal and almost lost and never hurt him at all. He went the distance with Tackie and never hurt him, and alot of people had him losing to Leija at the time of the stoppage. Then you add to that Hatton was the first guy since Vince who brought the fight straight to Tszyu. Leija and Tackie somewhat did but they didnt have the speed Hatton does.
Hatton would beat Tszyu every time and he wasnt flat at all. I bet that same Tszyu wouldve KO Mitchell again or Hatton wouldve beat the Tszyu that fought Mitchell. He wasnt any different or flat. Hatton was just a different fighter and style.
Super_Lightweight 06-06-2005, 02:01 AM 100% correct, bro, which just goes to show ya that styles make fans, and people don't like Jones sometimes because they think they know who he is when they don't know S*** about him.
Anywho, yes, Tszyu is not shot by any means, although he isn't necessarily in his prime either.
JUYJUY 06-06-2005, 02:12 AM Tszyu didn't avoid the best fighters in his division(s) his whole career.
Zab Super Judah 06-06-2005, 02:14 AM Tszyu didn't avoid the best fighters in his division(s) his whole career.
roy jones didnt avoid anyone he beat both hopkins and toney. What other fighter in this world can say they beat hopkins and toney. It's not roy jones fault that the people in his division were weak

He didn't fight nobodies, he just made them look like nobodies. People would be saying how f'n great Montell Griffin was if Jones hadn't come along.

His divisions were strong, he knew that he didn't have a strong enough chin to mix it with the big boys.
Gerald McClellan was the best Middleweight in the World at the same time Jones Jr was in that division, Jones Jr didn't fight him. Jones Jr was number two to McClellan.
Benn, Eubank, Collins and Liles were all in the top three at certain points in 1995 and 1996 when Jones Jr was at 168, Jones Jr fought none of them - they were all World Champions offering Jones Jr unification clashes. Jones Jr ran scared from all of them.
Dariusz Michalczewski was undefeated World Champion at 175 for so many years and it was at the same time that Jones Jr was in that division... Jones Jr didn't want nothing to do with him.
JUYJUY 06-06-2005, 02:46 AM He didn't fight nobodies, he just made them look like nobodies.
Jones Jr defended his IBF 168 title five times - three of which weren't even ranked in the top 10 in the division at the time, one of which was a blown-up lightweight, and the other was indeed the #1 contender at the time and was some guy called Bryant Brannon (oh yeah, he was great.. lol).
Following Jones Jr's 175 win over 'Nigel Benn wannabe' Richard Hall (Richard who?), people were saying that Jones Jr was better than Sugar Ray Robinson - if that's not over-rated then I don't know what is.
PapiShasho 06-06-2005, 03:50 AM Tszyu didn't avoid the best fighters in his division(s) his whole career.
roy jones did?!?! hahaha...
he only beat the #1 pound for pound fighter right now in hopkins, beat toney, beat the guy who beat toney (griffin), etc...who else did you want him to beat? he cant fight everyone in the world.
PapiShasho 06-06-2005, 03:51 AM Dariusz Michalczewski was undefeated World Champion at 175 for so many years and it was at the same time that Jones Jr was in that division... Jones Jr didn't want nothing to do with him.
didnt wanna fight overseas, and after getting robbed at the olympics, i dont blame him.
either way, overrated darius michdkjlfdblahblah got beat by julio gonzalez. didnt roy beat him too?
Zab Super Judah 06-06-2005, 04:46 AM didnt wanna fight overseas, and after getting robbed at the olympics, i dont blame him.

yeah no problem with not wanting to fight overseas besides he was the draw why should he go overseas
Cletus Funk 06-06-2005, 05:07 AM Anyone whoe doubts RJJ's talent is a fool. That said, he did opt for the easy life for a lot of his career and that is the only thing that stops me putting him up there with people like SRL, SRR and Hagler. The fights with McLellan, Eubank, Benn, etc should have been made regardless of location, and I'm not saying they should have been in England in the case of the latter 2. He may well have lost the odd fight but it wouldn't have detracted from his legacy as much as not fighting them seems to have. This isn't something that can be levelled at KT. He's not put a foot wrong in his career in my eyes and politics/fear didn't stop him making the fights.

All Euro fighters. Nothing stopped them from coming here and fighting Roy. He already beat better people in Toney and Hopkins. McClellan was his friend dumbass. Of course he didn't fight him.
DM? You're ****ing gay man. You're just a Jones hater, admit it. Even bringing up DM just shows you're a Euro ******. DM had ONE ****ing belt, the WBO belt. Jones had ALL the other titles, and this was when the WBO was even less than it is now. Jones was undisputed, yet DM expected Jones to go over there and fight on his turf for less money. Ha! That ****** wasn't ****. Julio Gonzales and Fabrice Tiozzo.

Thats ****ing bull****!
The reason why people like Tsyzu is because he's respectful, non trash talking and self confindent. He admits he was beaten the better man on the night.
Roy Jones has non respect for his opponents, talks as much trash as Mayweather and Toney together and has a huge ego, he thinks he's above everyone else. When he was beaten he kept making excuses.
I dont know why people get hung up on the skin colour issue, people hate fighters like Jones, Mayweather and Toney because they are *******s(even though i think they are funny), not because they are black.
Question - who doesnt like Big George Foreman?? He's self confident but doesnt have a massive ego, same with Evander Holyfield.
solo1bc 06-06-2005, 05:35 AM DM? You're ****ing gay man. You're just a Jones hater, admit it. Even bringing up DM just shows you're a Euro ******.
So your homophobic and a racist! Way to go!
People are allowed an opinion converse to yours with out getting called names mate... And by the way the opinion stated is a pretty common one THROUGHOUT boxing so I don't think people say it just because they hate Jones... Even if they do...
Grow the **** up!
And by the way.. Looking at your Avatar I would say people in glass houses....!!!
YoungTurk 06-06-2005, 09:22 AM It is partially skin color, I believe this. Tszyu is not so respectful. How is he respectful? He says arrogantly that he will win fights. Roy Jones was gracious in defeat, as was Tszyu. This site, truth be told, has a lot of hidden racism for fighters, I see it. Boxing is at times culturally based, so this is no big surprise.
There is plenty of criticism that one could offer about Kostya Tszyu, which has been made on these very boards by members, but other members either just say crap about "Tszyu is respectful" or just ignore it all together. Tszyu has been nothing but disrespectful to Zab Judah, refusing to grant him a rematch. That isn't gracious, it is cowardly.
Tszyu insulted Mitchell for quitting against him. That's a good sportsman? Mitchell was clearly injured before the first fight, Tszyu knew this. Mitchell fought anyhow. Tszyu took advantage and threw Mitchell around as much as possible.
Tszyu also insulted Acelito Freitas for quitting after the fight with Diego Corrales. If you recall, Mitchell fought on the undercard so Tszyu was there to watch. So he saw it happen. And said bad things about both men. This is not being a good sport.
And Ricky Hatton really had fought all nobodies prior to Tszyu. His best win was against a severely washed up Vince Philips. Hatton also clearly ducked fighters prior to the Tszyu fight. He proved this when he gave up his #1 contendership before the Tszyu fight was even signed.
My purpose here is not to insult Hatton or Tszyu, though I suppose I did so. My purpose is to say that there are very justified reasons to not like Hatton or Tszyu just as much as Jones, or at least somewhere close.
Why I say race may be a factor for some. When I was young, I recall a particular Roy Jones fight against Vinnie Pazienza. I was not very big into boxing but I remember at school there was a little hype about this fight. All the black kids went for Roy Jones and a lot of the white kids went for Pazienza. A lot more than should have, we shall put it that way. None of the Pazienza fans had any real justification for rooting for him. A few of the white kids did actually go for Roy Jones. None of the black kids went for Pazienza, that I knew of at least.
I do not believe the vast majority of those kids were boxing fans at all. The white kids pulling for Roy Jones knew enough to know that Roy Jones was a much better fighter than Pazienza. So for all those that knew nothing, race and peer pressure were the only attributes the kids went on. Not saying that is everyone, just saying it can be a factor for some.
MrUnstoppable 06-06-2005, 10:26 AM You'll have to excuse the Juy. Apparantly, Roy made a special trip overseas just to pee in Juy's oatmeal and it now affects his grasp on reality.
YoungTurk 06-06-2005, 10:46 AM Glad I don't eat oatmeal. Oranges are quite tasty, sometimes. And Blueberry muffins can be great, and filling.
Tarver is my dad 06-06-2005, 10:48 AM Roy Jones is known to have a huge ego, while people consider Zoo more humble. When it comes down to it, the way a boxer presents himself shows a lot about that person. I absoutely hated Glen Johnson when he beat Jones, but when I heard him at the post-fight and he said "I am not the best, but I am willing to fight the best," I became a fan right away. So what I'm saying is, I think people takes Zoo more lightly is because of his humble attitude.
YoungTurk 06-06-2005, 11:09 AM Is Tarver really your father? I hope not, for what I will say might anger you, but it is not meant to do so. Antonio Tarver looks like one of those menstral actors:

I wonder if people have said that to him. Probably only once if they did, since he could knock them out.

So I guess you despised Ali, also..
YoungTurk 06-06-2005, 11:39 AM I love Jones, Mayweather, and Toney. I think people just get mad because they hate these fighters so much that they get mad that others love them. I love hearing James Toney run his mouth personally. He is a one man riot.
Clubber Lang, Thunderlips, and Apollo Creed were some of the best characters in Rocky because they were painted as villains, though Creed was always a fairly complex character.
I love the "bad guy." Usually, that is who I root for. That is why horror has a cult following. People don't care about the kids in the Freddy movies or Jason movies. They want to see Freddy and Jason wipe the floor with these annoying kids that look a lot like the people that used to bother us in high school.
Sometimes, just sometimes, it feels really good seeing Barbie and Ken get their just deserts. Don't you want to see the good guys lose sometimes? I do...almost all the time.
solo1bc 06-06-2005, 11:47 AM By your reasoning then YoungTurk you'd rather see some ******* who shoots his mouth off, has no respect, is arrogant, ignorant and couldn't give a **** about anyone get the rewards of winning over someone who is humble, has respect and actually deserves it!
Just so that you can get your kicks?!
Each to their own but it doesn't make any sense to me mate!
YoungTurk 06-06-2005, 12:06 PM Skill does count for something too my friend. Roy Jones, James Toney, and Floyd Mayweather have also almost always been greatly more skilled than their opponents as well.
As Jack the Ripper said, you didn't like Ali?
solo1bc 06-06-2005, 12:23 PM Ali was humble when it mattered.. in life... And a ****y bastard when it mattered... in the ring!
How can you mention Mayweather & James Toney in the same sentence as Mohammed Ali?!
Your saying Ali was ignorant and couldn't give a **** about anyone? Nothing could be further from the truth!
What I took from your post about supporting the 'bad guy' is that you'd prefer someone like Tyson to win despite him pissing away 200 million dollars, raping some girl and biting peoples ears off!
Super_Lightweight 06-06-2005, 01:29 PM Roy Jones has non respect for his opponents, talks as much trash as Mayweather and Toney together and has a huge ego, he thinks he's above everyone else. When he was beaten he kept making excuses.
lol...right. Jones is no where in their leagues when it comes to trash-talking and you cannot document it either, because I have been following all three of those fighters' words and those guys easily talk more **** than Jones. Jones talks good about himself without talking **** about others almost always.
Also, Jones is not an arrogant man. You know a man on TV and through the media, you don't KNOW the man. Many here in Pensacola do. Roy will sit down and have a convo with Joe Blow and listen to anyone about anything. He is not a blowhard in real life, whatever you think real life is.
Tarver is my dad 06-06-2005, 02:18 PM Some of my friends have personally met Roy, and they have told me he is really a down to earth, cool guy. And also like superlightweight said, Mayweather and Toney talks much more trash than Roy.

Yeah, Tyson really raped that cunt at all. So did that white boyfriend of hers before Tyson. Cause rape victims brag about getting raped the next night to their girlfriends. And rape victims go up to the World Champion's bedroom at 2 am to look at a stamp collection, not to ****. And rape victims go into a bathroom with a phone in it, lock the door, willingly remove their panties, then go back out into the room with the champ...to look at stamps, of course.
And you dumb ****er, clearly you don't know **** about boxing. What'd you do? Catch the Castillo vs. Corrales on a Free Showtime weekend or something, decide you'd pretend to like boxing for a couple weeks?
Muhammad Ali wasn't this beloved Teddy bear that you make him out to be. Not when that **** was going on live. White racist ****suckers like you tried to force him into a war he objected to fighting. He didn't do like George W. or Bill Clinton and dodge the draft. No, he took the tests and failed (probably on purpose but whatever). So they lowered their standards to match his EXACT scores, proving without a shadow of a doubt that they just wanted to send him to Vietnam to be killed.
Ali said **** that, **** your war, I'm not for it. He didn't run. He was a rich man, he could've gone overseas and fought anywhere in the world. No, he stood his time while White America ****ing hated him, called him names like "draft dodging nig" when he didn't even run. They took away his job, his way to earn a living. They humiliated him.
That's how beloved Muhammad Ali was back then.
No, over time he has become loved. There are many reasons. One is because of all the bull**** he went through with the Vietnam ****. Another is because he has Parkinson's Disease. Now, his legacy is remembered as great, but back then...he was just the World champ, which was good but not yet legendary.
No, Toney isn't going to be the next Ali, neither is Floyd Mayweather. For one, they don't have the mainstream exposure Ali had. Another, they're not heavyweights. Toney is now, but he's only able to exist as a legit heavyweight because of the ****ty state. At least that's the public's perception. They're not fighting in Africa in a match that goes beyond just the fight in the ring.
That isn't to say that one day Mayweather and Toney could and probably both will go down as legendary fighters. It might be twenty, thirty years before they start getting that sort of status.

Agreed...until you meet Roy you can't grasp how the man really is. I've worked in college and professional sports for several years and I've never met a professional athlete as gracious and catering to his fans as Roy Jones, Jr. I was really stunned to see how the man interacts with his fans. He does a lot for the community on the Gulf Coast as well.

How do you know if I'm white your racist pig! I never said Ali was a Teddy Bear or anything of the sort. What I said was that when it came to boxing he was arrogant as anything, I didn't like what he did to Joe Frazier anymore than the next guy but it was part of the game but when it came to life outside of boxing he stood up for what he believed in and lived with respect and humility towards his fellow man! Why do you think he transcended boxing the way he did!
If you'd stop being such a ****ing bully and laying into anyone on here you've got a problem with you'd understand that I actually agree with what you said below! How old are you? I didnt see any difference from this Tszyu and his other fights. The difference is he fought a guy who was better. Tszyu KO Mitchell and Judah early(both slick southpaws) but against his last 3 right handers he didnt look special at all. He went the distance with Urkal and almost lost and never hurt him at all.
100% correcto mungo.
