View Full Version : Hopkins, Haye, Jones - thoughts.
Philfy 04-05-2010, 04:51 AM I wandered down the pub Sunday for some lunch and boxing (in that order).
The chicken parmagiana I had was excellent, the boxing not so much.
I'm just here to add my voice to the chorus of those calling for Hopkins and Jones to retire. Both of these guys are done and dusted.
How awful was Hopkins! I mean, his style has always been pretty ugly, but taking a knee on those 3 occasions? That's some pretty sad stuff right there. Some brilliant acting no doubt, but IF he was seeing stars as he claims, then it's obviously time to call it a day.
I dunno what to say about Jones. He's lucky that B-Hop couldn't throw a decent punch. I get the feeling he'll keep on fighting, which is a shame.
Some better boxing news is obviously David Haye's win over Ruiz. Haye packs some true speed and power for a heavyweight. The first knockdown in the first round was a gem.
A couple of things I noticed about Haye, is that he doesn't feint a lot, nor use much head movement. These 2 things (especially the latter) will severely limit his success against other heavyweight opponents. I just can't see Haye getting past the excellent jabs of the Ukranian champs.
Anyway, what are your takes on this past w/e's action?
boxing_great 04-05-2010, 04:55 AM To be honest, I thought David Haye looked really really slow.
When he threw punches to Ruiz' body they look extremely slow..maybe because of the extra weight at Heavyweight.
He tends to lunge in when he throws his punches, so he is kind of all over the place..He could get rocked as he is flying in..I didn't think the fight was all that exciting either..It was 1 sided and a lot of the time Haye was on the backfoot.
With hopkins I would really love to see him fight Danny Green.

I think after watching quick handed fighters in the lower divisions, most heavyweights will look slow. The speed is comparative to others in the same division though. If Haye was slow, what was John Ruiz?
You're right about Haye though, he gets a bit wild in some of those exchanges. Bring on Haye v David Tua I say.
After watching the latest Hopkins fight, I feel Green would have a better chance than he did before. He would have big advantages in stamina and power. Hopkins is a wily old dog though, and history proves he can't be written off.
brently1979 04-05-2010, 07:15 PM That is what I expected from Hopkins and Jones.
Hopkins is one of the most boring fighters to come along in a long time.
Archangel22 04-06-2010, 02:12 AM Yeah as much as it pains me to say it Jones needs to retire, my fav boxer of all time but watching him the last few yrs have really stank and Im pissed because its messing up his record. I dont care if Bhop won I wont say he is the better fighter Roy has lost it big time and he fought like garbage, both did actually. Roy just stayed away and never engaged, he cant dodge the punches also with his speed he kept clinching, when is he going to realise its over. Both have to retire really even Bhop stank in the fight, neither fighter got belted, it was below average to watch.
As for Haye I dont care who is he but, Jones and Hopkins will still the spotlight away from him. Im just really cut that the careers should end in that way, down hill instead of ontop. Pitty Roy doesnt fight anymore the past few yrs he just sits on the ropes it makes him look bad. Some of those defeats he had including Green and Bhop I do feel as though Roy shouldve won if he actually engaged and not just wait to set traps and counters. Hang up the gloves legends and save your record because its really looking messed up now.
IMO i think David Haye is the real deal. That was the fourth heavyweight fight Haye has had and he showed that he possesses the necessary tools to really shake up this division.
He had an extremely limited build up to this fight with Ruiz due to a cut and as a result didn't spar for the last 5 week of his training camp. With this in mind IMO Haye won this fight with raw talent and ability.
I agree with philfy in that Haye does have legitimate power and incredible speed for a heavyweight. IMO I think he is currently the fastest active heavyweight in boxing today. IMO He is probably the fastest heavyweight since Ali.
Ruiz is tough as nails and he showed some real guts getting up off the floor after Haye dropped him in the first, fifth and sixth. Also Ruiz did land some flush power punches and Haye took them on the chin.
Again I echo philfy's observation that Haye did not have very good head movement for this fight and he just stepped out of range when Ruiz moved towards him aggressively.
I think that Haye worked his jab effectively and countered brillianty at times. Also Haye does possess a very heavy right cross and he did some real damage with that hand.
I do think that Haye has the tools to defeat the Ukranian brothers. Speed, power, accuracy and good counter punches. Defensively he needs to tighten up, maybe keep his right hand a little higher. I think the booming right hand of Wladimir Klitscho may trouble Haye, as Haye does not lift his left hand at all.
Remember that Haye was incredibly effective against the 7ft russian ogre Valuev. His camp came out with a good gameplan and he executed well landing clean power punches on Valuev without receiving any damage at all. Haye rocked Valuev bad in the 12th as well.
IMO with a good game plan and a good training camp Haye can unify the HW titles.
As of Bhop and Jones Jr...didn't watch it and don't plan too.
Furthermore i would like to see Haye vs Arreola or Haye vs Eddie Chambers...before he takes on one of the Klitscho brother's.

Why do people still talk about Tua? it really confuses me.

Gotta disagree with ya Sine. To beat a Klitschko, you have to be able to get past their jab. It's not an easy thing to do, especially with Haye's aforementioned (lack of) head movement. He might be competitive for a few rounds, but when he starts to cop some piston hard jabs in the face, he'll slow down and eventually be stopped.
In the Valuev fight, I think Haye had to change his gameplan early on when he broke his hand. Valuev is no where near as good as either Klitschko.
Philfy 04-06-2010, 09:15 PM Why do people still talk about Tua? it really confuses me.
Because he's still an exciting fighter.

eah, when matched with bums.
Lets have Tua vs Chagaev, Tua vs Povetkin, Tua vs Adamek.
he loses badly to all 3 and dissapears out of the picture, a picture he really shouldnt be in based on his performances in the last 10 years.
