(June 2, 2005) “A Champion’s Salute to Our Heroes” is the tagline for the homecoming of the reigning IBF Super Middleweight Champion Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy. Lacy (19-0-0, 15 KOs), a St. Petersburg, FL native, is defending his belt against former world champion and IBF #1 contender Robin Reid (38-4-1, 27 KOs) on August 6, 2005 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida. The night of action is presented by Gary Shaw Productions in association with One Punch Productions.

Gary started off the Press Conference thanking everyone for attending and welcoming Jeff Lacy back to his home town, “bringing Jeff to his hometown worries me, lots of pressure [in fighting in your hometown], but I promised if [Jeff] became world champ, I would bring you to Tampa.” Along with the two main event stars, Ronald “Winky” Wright and Deigo “Chico” Corrales joined at the main table. Both Diego and Winky were invited by Gary Shaw to the podium, but both stated, they are here to support Jeff – don’t want to take the spotlight off of him.

Terry Trekas, head of One Punch Productions, took center stage after “Winky.” “I am thrilled to be apart of this,” and stated that this event provides “unprecedented opportunity” for local boxers. Terry introduced the co-main event boxer, “Diamond” David Santos (45-6-0, 29 KOs). Santos stated “I am glad Lacy brought boxing back to his hometown,” and commented jokingly to Lacy directly that “I remember him fighting on my undercard and now I am on his!”

Terry then welcomed two of the boxers off of the undercard, Brian Chiary and Carlos Manuel Rivera. Both boxers thanked everyone for bringing them here and stated they were in awe of everyone around them.

“It is a testament to these fighters (Jeff Lacy, Robin Reid, “Winky” Wright, and Deigo Corrales) that these guys are awed to be here with them,” stated Gary Shaw.

“Jeff may be the number one fighter (in terms of appearances) in Showtime history” – Gary. In regard to Robin, Gary thanked him for coming, “very few UK fighters have come across to the US, I give you all the credit.”

Jess Harding, Robin Reid’s promoter for the past five years, spoke highly of both boxers, as they each were Olympic bronze medalists and this match-up could turn out better than Winky’s or Deigo’s. “We know everything about Jeff…his strengths and his weaknesses.”

Gary responded to Jess “the last time I heard a speech like that was from Papa Trinidad.” Both Robin and his promoter spoke well of Jeff and kept their comments short. Gary also spoke highly of Robin, “[He] can bang, he would not have been my choice to fight.”

Jeff Lacy took to the podium last. “I am happy I can bring a fight to my home fans. I will be in tremendous shape, it will be a great fight.” He stated he will have open workouts. “I hope everyone enjoys the fight.”

Jeff finished off the event stating, “I will retain my title, trust me.”

Undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy (19-0, 15 KOs), make his professional home debut in a mandatory title defense against former WBC super middleweight champion Robin Reid (38-4-1, 27 KOs), on August 6 at the St. Pete Times Forum in a bout to be televised on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. "England lost to the United States in 1776 and in the rematch of 1812, there is no way, as Commander-in-Chief of the super middleweight division, I'm letting England win the 2005 war on the Tampa/St. Pete shore," declared Lacy. Reid, from Runcorn, England, commented "I am thrilled to have this fight," said Reid. "This is a landmark event in my professional career -- to finally make my U.S. debut. This is what every fighter dreams of, fighting for a world title on the sport's biggest stage. Let Tampa and St. Petersburg know that the British are coming -- coming to take back the crown."

Should be a great fight. It'll be a good learning experience for Lacy win or lose, Reid's pretty awkward and as strong as they come.

Really good point. I think more so though, a chance for Lacy to add notches under his belt. Them standing next to eachother increases my confidence in the fight day by day.

haha. Those pics speak for them damn selves. Those cultural differences are really wierd man. Masterdirector made that thread about the Klitschkos being gay....and since then, pictures have been popping up everywhere.

McKay posted some DM pictures that were promotions for his cologne line...naked. I googled Robin Reid......naked. People in the states are generally homophobic to a certain extent, and those pictures are a two sided coin:

Europe

Perhaps a sign of attractiveness from females...which they must be in the states as well.

States

Bait for homophobes and gag material for opposition parties.

Dunno man. I'm with you, those kind of pics are nasty. I don't know what Reid was thinking. I think they're more liberal on the continent in places like Germany and Holland but the UK is still pretty homophobic. I'd hope they're trying to appeal to the ladies coz it sure as hell doesn't work on me and it's not very macho for a boxer to be a gay icon:D

Reid lost a split decision to Joe Calzaghe years ago in his prime. It was an oddly scored fight where two judges had it 116-111 for Joe and one had it 116-11 for Reid. From all I've heard it was a close, good fight. Reid didn't go down and neither did Calazghe, which probably affirms both their chins and power.

Reid lost to an older Thulane Malinga, Silvio Branco, and he was robbed vs a faded German super-puss named Sven Ottke. All in all Reid has beaten the typical European fringe guys (SD vs Hacine Cherifi and a UD vs Brian Magee recently in a fight which he floored Magee 4 times...my uncle reffed that fight in Ireland by the way, and will also ref Reid'Lacy).

Reid beat a "name" in Julio Cesar Vasquez, who beat Winky Wright and Javier Castillejo. However, by the time Reid beat Vasquez, Vasquez was pretty damn long in the tooth.

Reid's last fight was at lightheavyweight, vs a nobody, and being that Reid is 34 and his hasn't been that active, and according to reports I've read on his recent fights, Reid is nearing the end himself.

In any case, Reid is a legit top 3 supermiddleweight and he has enough in the tank to give Lacy a fight. Should Lacy win, it would mean he has "arrived" and it would trigger a fight with Calzaghe (well, Calzagheand Warren CLAIM that's the case anyway).

Great post SL, that pretty much sums up Reid's career accomplishments, or lackthereof, depending on who you ask.....

I saw Reid 2-3 times in the mid-90's on Showtime, he's got a heavyweight physique and throws monster punches, but he seemed to always go flat after 4-5 hard rounds and become too methodical, my guess is that it will take Lacy about 1/2 the fight to figure Reid out then he'll get into a rhythm and blast Reid into a corner & force a stoppage but we'll have to wait til August to see!!!
