Who wins this scrap at both fighters peak?

The Manassa Mauler with his superior handspeed and great left hook?

or

Merciless Mercer with his excellent chin and good right hand?

Jack Dempsey would slaughter him. Jess Willard showed us that an iron chin and good right hand is no defense against 'ol Jack.

I would have to go with Mercer by KO in 10. Mercer would just keep coming foward and use his size to wear down Dempsey.

Wear him down? How's he going to do that when he's reeling from a crippling body assault? Mercer had a good chin but nothing better than what Willard was sporting in Toledo and don't forget Ray's less than stellar physique. I don't think his soft belly would hold up to the punishment the greatest bodypuncher in heavyweight history would dish out. Dempsey had combination punching to the torso down to a science.

To beat Dempsey you needed great movement, stamina and a jab. Mercer did not have the tools to be competitive with the Manassa Mauler and would get beaten senseless as would anyone who tried to stand up to those punches.

I am not trying to take anything away from Dempsey, but when two fighters step into the ring, anything can happen. I believe Mercer's chin would help him survive the early onslaught and help him pull out the win late in the fight. Both fighters like to come straight foward, which would lead to plenty of clinches. Mercer could use his size in the clinch to tire Dempsey, leaving him open late for the right hand. The only way I see Dempsey winning is buy a decision.

This could go either way, but my heart tells me Dempsey could handle Mercer. After all, we are talking about one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. I do not think Dempsey would be able to knock Mercer out for the full count, but I can see the ref being forced to stop the slaughter in about five or so rounds. Mercer had an awesome chin, but the constant, relentless attack from Dempsey, combined with his speed and power would hurt him badly.

dempsey knocks mercer out in the 10th, after a vicious body attack that would look very much like a pissed off hobo fighting for a sandwich. mercer was a tough guy but never had the skills to beat dempsey, u gotta be an elite boxer to beat the manassa mauler, and mercer is never gonna be confused with gene tunney

Mercer is to big and strong and had a solid chin, Tommy Morrison, Lenox Luis, Holyfield all saw how strong Mercers chin was..Mercer by late round KO. Dempsey was great but he is just physically to small for Ray Mercer.
