View Full Version : Teddy Atlas goes OFF on WBC!!!
SacTown1 05-28-2005, 03:30 PM Did anybody else catch Teddy Atlas' rant about the WBC situation surrounding the Castillejo/Vargas/Mayorga fiasco??? Man, Teddy gets more fired up on-camera than any other announcer in any sport. Do you think his complaints were justified? Do you think Mayorga deserves the title shot? Or Vargas, for that matter?
IMO neither guy has the right to be considered the mandatory WBC contender at 154....if anything, Mayorga should be top 10-15 at 160, and Vargas should be around 8-10 at 154
hollister 05-28-2005, 03:31 PM Didn't see that, must've been a sight to see lol
TheKnifeManconi 05-28-2005, 03:33 PM i agreed with him.
and im also grateful that hes in my sport,no other sport has a guy that cool devoted to it.
plus he could beat up any other white guy his age on tv,he was a beast as an amateur

Did you go to the fights at Arco Arena last night?
If so, how did it go?

couldn't go, just watched them on Solo Boxeo, Castaneda looked like he always does: workmanlike, active, but with very little defense....Chente was awesome, he has a straight right hand that's lighting-quick, once ge gets a little older that right hand is gonna be Hearns-esque

I caught that on ESPN. I totally agree with him. There should be no reason why Don King should have so much controll over the wbc. Sen McCain should definitely step in there and fix these issues.
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 05-28-2005, 04:33 PM I heard Teddy only had a few amateur fights?
tracylee 05-28-2005, 04:33 PM As long as Suleyiman is such good buddies with King that will be a problem. I heard Ted going on about it last night, and I totally agree with him. I kept remembering though how he used to "go on" that way over ppv prices too, and now ESPN is doing it too. Hard to take him serious when for yr's I heard him rant over that and now theyre doing the very same thing
NiGe2011 05-28-2005, 04:36 PM I don't know how anybody can not love Teddy and his incoherent and drunken sounding rants. I think he forgets what he is talking about halfway through the tyrade and starts over again. I think you could see Tesitorre wincing as the exec's at ESPN were yelling into his ear "Make him stop talking. Cut him off! CUT HIM OFF!"

I see what you're saying but, Atlas doesn't run espn, He has no say in business related issues. Is he supposed to keep expressing his opinions in regards to PPV events and lose his job over it. He probably feels the same way but, unfortunately has to keep his mouth shut on that topic so he can make a living.

So thats why Joe looks like he's in pain during those times?? :D Makes perfect sense..poor guy!

Hell no he's not supposed to endanger his job  it just doesnt sit well with me, ya know? Bugs the hell out of me actually. But yeah, he is just an employee, but also a sort of a 'lone gun' too, who always said what was on his mind, no matter who liked it (or didnt).
The Troll 05-28-2005, 05:19 PM I hope that Federal Commision never happpens. It will end up being more corrupt than anything you can imagine. Don King might not have the pull but somebody else just will. The only way could imagine a Federal boxing Commision being a good thing, is they have a belt. And then whoever had that belt is considered undisputed champion. And then there is not the 3 belt thing anymore.
I am sorry say I trust Don King and Jose Suliman more than Political parties of the US federal government and ABC broadcasting corporation who Teddy Atlas is an employee of and mouthpiece for.
Who are ABC Corporation and the United States Federal Government anybody to accuse others of corruption. If that is not the kettle calling the pot black. I dont know what is.

That's not the answer. What is it with Republicans flocking to big governement and government control all of a sudden? Isn't that kind of conflicting with their traditional party stance?
Anyway, what would actually help boxing is if two of the big four merged. When this happened, the two beltholders could fight each other for the belt, and it would be considered the most legitimate title. Kind of like the ABA and NBA or the AFL and NFL merging...
If we had just two belts, or ideally, just one, that was a recognized champion, that would solve a lot of the corruption, assuming you can keep the major one legit. If enough people were watching, it would be harder to taint.
I don't know if I'm for a boxing commission, like there's a commissioner in baseball or football. There's way too many athletes involved vs. the other pro leagues.
But there could be some membership involved, like the Screen Actors Guild, or Writers Guild, where, upon invitation, you could apply to become a member. Those deserving of Top 30 status or whatever would be invited every year or so. Then those belonging to that guild could have a union, there could be a governing body of this LEGIT organization, and they could operate more like a pro league.
But keep in mind how many fights go on every day in every corner of the world. Having one commission over all of it is both unrealistic and naive to believe it would work.
cybernica 05-28-2005, 07:03 PM My question is if Castellejo gets stripped who gets the belt? Since Mayo is the WBC next chanellenger then does he get it?
I am a Mayo fan, but I don't want see him get it like that..and I agree he doesn't deserve the shot hes getting. So make it some kinda of toruney with OMUA, Santos, Castellejo, Mayo, Vargas, Simms...ect ect
SacTown1 05-28-2005, 07:07 PM Best case scenario, as of today, would be for Vargas to challenge Castillejo on August 20 and for the winner to fight Mayorga within 90 days, this seems to be the only fair solution within this corrupt string of events

Mayorga will fight against the next highest ranked available contender for the vacant title.

Speaking of Ouma, did Winky not promise him a shot after the first Mosley fight? It seems to me that Kassim felt just as 'avoided' as Winky's always felt, and Winky knew that and therefore promised him a fight during one of the press conferences.

Whats up Tracy
It seems to me like winky is going for the money now, i guess i can't blame him. He is hot right now, and to take a chance against Ouma would be to risky, if he wins who cares? But if he looses his big paydays are over

That is so very true...a great point. Shame of it is those are the very same reasons that Winky was so avoided for so long..and the very reason he promised Kassim a fight. Maybe he'll evuentally get around to doing that. He's not really obligated or anything..it was strictly a verbal 'thing'.
P.S...love the new avatar, by the way. How are ya doing anyway?? It's been a while, and I tend to worry about you a bit cause I know youre going away pretty soon! :(
BadMagick 05-28-2005, 09:58 PM I caught that on ESPN. I totally agree with him. There should be no reason why Don King should have so much controll over the wbc. Sen McCain should definitely step in there and fix these issues.
I didn't hear the rant, but damn, if that's not the truth. Don King is, perhaps, the worst thing to ever happen to boxing. The man just pushes money here or there, and gets his way. If boxing banned the King, then it'd probably have a huge turn-around, in terms of popularity, and legitimacy.
Teddy Atlas cracks me up regularly....I forget which fight but Emmanuel Augustus Burton was fighting, doing his showboating thing and pissing off the ref, but all the commentators thought that Burton was WAY ahead on the scorecards. Of course, the judges then proceeded to screw up the decision and I think one of them even neglected to give a 10-8 round for a knockdown...Teddy Atlas grabbed the judge after the match was over and grilled him over the decision and scoring...funny as hell...He also *****es about Joe Mesi and Riddick Bowe pretty regularly, which is also amusing....his bit about the Don King this last week was awesome since you rarely hear this kinda stuff.
Super_Lightweight 05-28-2005, 11:07 PM Good for Teddy. Someone who's respected on the sport shpuld make some noise when corruption is bovious. Teddy is NOT being a hypocrite about PPV's though, because, ESPN DID give a fair price of only 30 dollars, which is much less than what others offer.
if anything, Mayorga should be top 10-15 at 160, and Vargas should be around 8-10 at 154
Not really. Vargas hasnt't even fought at 154. Not even 160. His last fight he hit 162. At least Mayorga can make 154 lbs (obviously he can after being at 147 and being to small for 160).
Mayorga>Vargas at 154.
Mayorga is a more live and legit fighter these days than Vargas.
Truth 05-29-2005, 12:16 AM Atlas is cool, but he needs to calm down a little. He goes way to crazy sometimes. LOL

man, all i can say is youre either nuts or just got into the fight game. suliman is a known criminal and don king is well don king. these guys control judges. they strip boxers of their belts if they don't play along. they make horrible matchups to pad the records. if you have the money you can buy abelt from these guys. i'm too riled up to go on. we need one commision and one belt. these criminals have ruled too long

Of course they were justified, and 100% accurate. Everyone knows that Don "Dickhead" King owns the WBC, and does whatever the **** he wants to with it. Teddy's asking for something the sport should've had 50 years ago. A ****ing commission to keep Boxing clean(er).
And no, Mayorga doesn't deserve a title shot. You aren't rewarded with a title shot when you're beaten to a pulp by a guy who gets humiliated by a boxer in his next fight.

The "Republicans" aren't trying to increase government control....McCain just wants the ****ing sport cleaned up. Everyone does, and a boxing commission is probably the only way to do it. Turn boxing into a nationally (or internationally, preferrably) regulated sport, and when corruption is found, and proven, ban the individual from the sport for a given period of time, up to a lifetime ban.
Don King should be banned for life...and then publicly stoned...and then his corpse should be left rotting in a cage suspended from the ceiling of MSG as a warning to other promotors and managers.
Sure, getting rid of all the belts and breaking it down to a single title would be great for the one fighter in each division who happened to be the holder of the title, but all the alphabet belts give the younger and up and coming fighters to give them a little recognition. I do feel, though, that there should be one exclusive title in each division, that gives the fighter who holds that title the status of the "Best of the best" in that division, and the fighter who holds that belt should be forced to vacate any and all other titles upon winning that title.

I didn't know that; wonder why he didn't give pro a shot? I ****en love Teddy and agree with those rankings the thread starter proposed. Neither of those guys deserve to be a mandatory anything right now.
I do wish George Foreman had clocked him though, when Teddy kept shoving him at that press conference. Someone has a gif of that displayed on their posts. It's funny when you see it now. Check out the expression on George's face.

The Fix 05-29-2005, 12:54 PM teddy atlas is great for boxing, he tells it how it is and he doesnt care what people say.

More live & legit fighter? Well then I'd LOVE to get embarassed for 12 straight rounds vs. a feather-fisted fighter, then get KTFO by Tito Trinidad, if that's what it takes to become "live & legit" then count me in!!!! I guess by those standards Andrew Golota is on top of the boxing world....c'mon SL you're a great, thoughtful writer on this site, Mayorga is a lot of fun to watch but he hasn't been "live & legit" since the Forrest fights

Mayorga gets credit for a knockdown vs Spinks (who is also a good fighter) and Mayorga stays undisputed. The fight was by no means a domination. Getting KTFO by Tito was expected. Who cares? Mayorga is smaller and was prefectly made for Tito. That was at 160 anyway. Mayorga is a top 10 fighter at 154, end of story. Golota got stopped in 1 round on a couple occasions, which has never happened to Mayorga.
In any case, any way you slice it, Mayorga is more live and legit than Vargas is. Vargas would get kiled by Mayorga.

It's Sulaiman.
Slipx 05-29-2005, 03:48 PM teddy said something like,"Don king is good friend with Sulemon(sp),and if the #1 contender is a don king fighter and hasnt earned his shot, well thats all you need to know" he compared it to baseball or football,he was like the bears dont get to play in the playoffs by paying someone off,you earn your way up

Oh, I see..so, since theirs was $10-$20 cheaper, it's not the least bit hypocritical?? Especially since Teddys favorite 'saying' was something about televised boxing should be free to the fans, regardless of who's fighting.

he was just saying that because espn was hosting the ppv, since he works for fnf and all I guess it makes sense, again it is a bit hypocritical...boxing should be free like it was in the 70s damnit
even the 80s.when mike fought buster it was on regular cable television live ;o

Hey, I agree that it was a little cheaper than usual, and thats cool. And I also know that Teddy has to be..hmmm, lets say "selective" in his commentary when it's a bit on the negative side..so I dont fault him for going along with it, it's not like it's up to him or anything. I'm just pointing out all the many, many times he was the loudest complainer against ppv prices..fleecing the fans, etc. It's extremely hard to just forget all that. That was all I was saying really.
tracylee 05-29-2005, 04:00 PM It's Sulaiman.

Look at the price of the ESPN PPV and the quality of the fights vs those on HBO. Lower price, better quality fights, more of them.
Kind of hard to see how ESPN was going against what he said about PPV's being priced too high for the lackluster fights when they put a great card together for barely over half the price of the crap on HBO.

vB Martin 05-29-2005, 05:02 PM Back on topic.
I don't agree that there should be a Federal Boxing Commission. We don't have one for baseball or football, or any other sport.
What needs to happen is that fighters and their managers need to take these things into their own hands. We need more fighters like Diaz throwing away their belts to give us the fights we want to see rather than taking the Mandatory Corpse that no one wants to see. It makes financial sense for them and produces great fights for us.
A Federal Commission is kind of like us going into Iraq (per excuse number 4). You cannot force Democracy from the outside. It has to be something that the people on the inside want and fight for themselves.
The fans can help, as we are the second most important part of the sport. Quit buying these overpriced PPV's, quit tuning in when you see Zab Judah facing Cosme Rivero. Only the fighters and the fans can change the face of boxing.
I'm not a huge DLH fan, but I think his promotion company can also help if he starts putting together the fights people want to see. I can see boxers jumping over when they expire their King/Arum contracts.
Boxing has to clean itself up from the inside, not the outside.

And please make it clear how my posts about Hatton vs. Tszyu differ so much from everyone else's..you do that, since youre not happy unless youre constantly up my ass some way. Get a life why dont you! I'm not usually a complete *****, but you just nag like a girl and aggrivate the hell out of me, for lack of something better to do.
Geeze, irritates so much that I got this confused with Hatton-Tszyu! See what a pain in the ass you are??

You were posting at nauseum about Winky Wright on this this thread I thought it only approriate and decent that you be so kind as display the Hijack sign. The thread was supposed to be about Teddy Atlas mouthpiece for ABC comments and the Federal boxing Commsion Issue not Winky Wright.
The Troll 05-29-2005, 05:42 PM I hope that Federal Commision never happpens.
Yeah I agree some good points there. However I disagree in the fact that the Federal Boxing Commision can never have a belt and declare that belt La Belt De La Monde because its excludes Non American fighters. So having a Federal boxing commision would do nothing to solve the alphebet soup belt situation.

Sigh...for the last time, I dont care what you deem appropriate, or necessary, or important, or anything. Believe me, if everybody cried when someone changed the subject around here, this place would be flooded. They are MY posts, so I think I'll use my judgement on whats okay, and whats not. I'll even be "so kind" as to not tell you what to post, or where to post it. Cant believe that you care so much about my posts, and it's actually kind of scary.

....The only problem with this theory is that Rick says that he checked the IP addresses and McKay comes from Illinois and the Pretender is originating out of Florida. When Mckay is slipping up it may not be that he is confusing himself with the Pretender but with another poster that also lives in Illinois. Not sure how he could also be the Pretender and post from two different States. I am starting to think he is another longtime user and is not the Pretender.

mckay should pull out of tracylee's ass and tracylee should get a bigger strapon on and plow it deeper in mckay.then pull it out and stick it into this buttheads mouth.

That is not a very nice thing to say Steelhead. Also steelhead you have a very strange mind. You have to create sexual metaphors for everything. I thought it not correct that Tracy Lee Hijacked this thread directly after I made some good points with her banter about Winky Wright. I expressed my concerns to her. She complained as I expected for she does not care what is right and correct and I know this. But in any event, no strange, and also disgusting sexual metaphor is neccessary to explain this course of events Steelhead.

mckay i appoligize for calling you a butthead. and for takeing tracylee's metaphors and metaphorizing them further.but man, your dittsiness even with the quote above where you state and over rationalize about tracylee "she complains as i expected for she does not care what is right and correct and i know this" is to me just as disgusting as a sexual metaphor. sorry. get a thicker skin. and i should get a thinner skin. enough said momino (very southern italian meaning little brother).

It doesnt matter where or when I brought up winky, cause it had nothign to do with your post, or the fact that you think you brought up 'good points'. Someone else mentioned Kassim Ouma (which you didnt have a problem with) so I asked that person (meaning not you) if they remembered Winky promising to fight Ouma...had nothing to do with you, or anything you had posted. Once again, dont like my post, put me on ignore..then you'll have to find something else to cry about, but I have all the faith in you that it wont take you long to do just that. Everybody veers from topic just about every day around here (although it's only when I do it that you care or notice, of course) so you need to either ignore it or accept it

Inhaler 06-04-2005, 12:43 PM Thanks ever so much Webster, cause correct spelling is of great importance here at the site. If thats how you intend to spend you time here, youre gonna be a very busy guy.
No problem, *****.
tracylee 06-04-2005, 07:18 PM No problem, *****.
Thank you...I consider that a compliment!

You would, cunt.
tracylee 06-25-2005, 01:59 PM You would, cunt.
Cunt?? Jesus, some of you need to grow the hell up. You corrected my spelling, like it was some sort of big deal and I got sarcastic with you, without once calling you a name. So you come back with *****, which didnt work. Now it's cunt?? Keep trying and showing your panty size..no sweat off my nose. Acting all big, bad and tough calling a FEMALE a cunt cause she didnt get pissed when you called her a *****...real manly MAN of you. Your mother must be so proud.
`STEELHEAD 06-25-2005, 02:22 PM Good for Teddy. Someone who's respected on the sport shpuld make some noise when corruption is bovious. Teddy is NOT being a hypocrite about PPV's though, because, ESPN DID give a fair price of only 30 dollars, which is much less than what others offer.
Not really. Vargas hasnt't even fought at 154. Not even 160. His last fight he hit 162. At least Mayorga can make 154 lbs (obviously he can after being at 147 and being to small for 160).
Mayorga>Vargas at 154.
Mayorga is a more live and legit fighter these days than Vargas.
agree. espn has to cope with the compatition. there $30 ppv was great. compare it to don kings crap last december
vargas looked weird in his last fight. the only thing holding him up is his name. he needs more tuneups before risking getting hurt against crazy mayorga.

You're pretty desperate. I'll take a cunt untouched by the ravages of childbirth any day, thanks.
The Devil 06-30-2005, 03:51 PM Teddy Atlas is still angry about Mike Tyson giving his little sister the Jungle Heat.

Do you actually kiss your mother with that mouth boy?? Lol, how exactly would you know what I am, cunt or otherwise? You wouldnt but damn, dont let that stop you from acting like a littl sissy with hurt feelings or something.
