View Full Version : The Price of Modernization
chito 05-27-2005, 08:34 AM I used to dream of living in the city. Big city lights, modern facilities, air-conditioned fun houses, and everything that you only see on TV. That was then when i was only a kid.
Now if i could only bring back those times, i wouldn't change it for one second to this modern way of life -- not at all. Because for me, it was a lot better those days. It was a lot happier.
You can call me a plain country boy because we used to live in a nipa hut surrounded by rice fields & trees. There was still no electricity there those times and we were just being contented with the lights coming from a kerosene lamp. That was in 1970s, things were not the same since. Because that town was changed and became a modern town! Lots of business establishments were built there - theaters, shopping malls & industrial plants. The river where we used to jump on for a swim became so polluted and smelly due to wastes coming from that large piggery farm owned by a chinese businessman.
We could never turn back the clock. And everything has a price! The price of modernization is pollution! The not so responsible people living there. The selfish people who didn't take good care of our environment. They only think of the money they will earn. I could never be like that. Do you?

wow that sounds like you went from out little house on the prairy days to our modern days in just a few years! dude that really sux. i wouldn't swim in most of the rivers here either. except the mountain rivers. they are the cleanest. unfortunately without money i can't feed my family. so in a way i guess i am kinda like that. i buy the products from the very industries that are destroying out mother earth. unless you move further out where you don't use a car, electricty, running water and all that along with building your own house out of the natural world around you and you plant your own food and raise your own livestock.....i mean completely live off the land granola child then yes you are like them to a certain degree. man i wish all that were possible but i have to talk to you guys here and what about t.v. and being able to see boxing matches all over the world. yes there is a price to pay.

well, i guess you're right. but i just thought maybe it's better to live like that than living in the city where pollution is slowly killing you. don't you know that our life rate is beginning to shorten nowadays because of pollution?
czars_salad 05-30-2005, 12:44 AM i spent my entire preschool years in our remote ancestral home in the province of Leyte. i could still remember how we used to play in the fields, climb trees, fishing, and alot of other activities common to rural places. life was so simple then.
YoungTurk 05-30-2005, 01:33 AM Chito, our life rate is improving, not decreasing. Who told you it was getting worse? I don't believe that at all. The life expectancy of a man today is like 72 or 74. Less than 100 years ago it was late 30s.
Some things from back in older days I would like, but I must say that I love air conditioning and the Internet. I thought we would be getting ready to drive flying cars by now though. And teleporting like on Star Trek. That would be the best.

ah ok, to be honest with you, i just wrote it to prove a point about pollution. ah maybe you're right, though, i wont argue about it. it was based on experience and not on facts. i remember i had a grandpa who reached 110. maybe the real problem about pollution is the hazard that we might get cancer and die young, that was just what i thought. where did you get your facts? just asking...
