View Full Version : Glen Johnson
sisforshaq 05-26-2005, 12:24 AM Did anyone ever think that if Roy Jones Jr had beaten Glen Johhnson, everyone would have said that Glen is a bum, a wash up journey man and it was another bum for Roy. But he wins on a vicious KO and becomes fighter of the year.Imagine if Roy didnt even take the fight? Not taking anything away from Johnson but wow did Roy Jones Jr completley make his career.

he made Jonsons, and Tarvers career, pretty much the same way Tyson made Buster Douglas.. and so on, thats just the way this sport works, i think its kinda gay, I hope he comes back and lays the smack down RJ style.
Super Cruiserweight 05-26-2005, 12:32 AM I hope that no1 would of said Glen is a bum ! (a bum? thats harsh!)
He was clearly a decent, competetive fighter all throughout his career.
Peeps would of said 'Roy back in the swing of things, decent win, now ready to knock Tarver TFO'.
Exciterx24 05-26-2005, 12:32 AM I don't think that Johnson became FOY for beating Jones. That gained him some credit, but he won the award for beating Tarver, who was the real Jones slayer and was considered the top light heavy in the world. Johnson was a winnable fight for Roy Jones, but his game plan was way off. He was doing a rope a dope but taking the punches.
Roy had it all as a fighter. The only problem was that he did not do well when his back was on the ropes.
Famoso Matador 05-26-2005, 12:34 AM The win over Roy Jones made Johnson more popular, but by no means did it make him. Don't forget, Glen was the champ going into the fight.

Yep, if you'll notice Glen has quite a few losses on his record. Including one from the middleweight champion of the world, Bernard Hopkins.
jack_the_rippuh 05-26-2005, 11:37 AM I'll be the first to admit, I knew nothing of Glen Johnson aside from the fact that he got beat by Hopkins years ago. I simply judged him by his record, and when I heard how good Roy was talking about him saying he thinks he's at the strongest point of his career, I thought he was just trying to sell tickets by making the fight seem closer than it would be.
But I guess I was wrong. He destroyed Roy.. :(
I was more disappointed about the Tarver loss, though. When I found out his loss to Johnson I was like, "ehhh...wow."
I got a question. What's so harsh about using the word "bum" to refer to a fighter. I'm not talking about the person who said it in this thread, but there are some people on this site who can't tolerate hearing a fighter be called a bum. I mean c'mon say if you got a guy who's 7-47-1, you don't call that a bum?

Did you hear of Glen before his fight with Jones? Was Glen making any money before his fight with Jones?
The answer to both is probably no, definitely is for the second. Johnson owes his career to Jones, because had he not KOed him, he would have been forgotten. Why did he get the match with Tarver? He beat Jones! If it weren't for the fight with Jones, he would still be sitting on his IBF belt, fighting for nickels, while Tarver made bigger money with other guys, because he KOed Jones before.
Tarver and Johnson should really thank Jones for fighting and losing to them.
PacKillsMorales 05-26-2005, 06:36 PM Jones better start thinking about making that comeback.
he better sort his **** & start cracking heads in the ring beginning
with clinton woods, then the winner of tarver-johnson II or the winner
of tarver-johnson III, then beat the other, go back upto heavyweight
& whup all over the drugs cheat james "two-jabs" toney

Roy WAS just hypin the fight and at his best, Glencoffe couldn't carry his jock.
A record like that, 7-47-1, is a bum but we don't often discuss guys with records like that. Callin Ruiz(who I hate as a fighter) a bum with his record is just plain disrespect.
I don't think the guy who owns this site or even the good boxing posters want people to think they're that disrespectful of fighters who are brave and talented for gettin in there and gettin the big bucks.
jpboxer3 05-26-2005, 07:32 PM I knew alot about Johnson before he beat Jones Jr.Honestly, most people looked past Johnson, and thats the last thing you should do against a pressure hardworking fighter like Johnson, and plus Jones was coming off a devastating KO loss and thats the last type of fighter you wanna try and rebound against.I thought it was crazy, and also funny that most people thought Jones would easily beat Johnson.
I remember Johnson was suppose to fight Calzaghe before the Jones fight was ever made.If anyone,I think Johnson should thank Calzaghe for postponing their fight numerous times until Johnson got tired and pulled out of that fight to go ahead and take on Jones Jr.

But why did Jones want to fight Johnson? Could his IBF belt have anything to do with it? I think eventually the WBC and IBF title holders would have met up anyways.
The Fix 05-27-2005, 12:21 AM i know people would have said jones fought a paper champ and he needs to step up his competition. like jones has been saying for years he just "makes em look like nobodies" jones fought a lot of very good fighters that were simply overlooked because of the fashion he beat them. had this fight happened years earlier people would just have added johnson to the list of "nobodies" jones defeated.

Samething goes for Tarver. If Jones beat Tarver clearly the first time, people would just have added Tarver to the list of "nobodies" that jones defeated.
