View Full Version : Most memorable referee instructions
!! Anorak 05-24-2005, 12:28 PM Trivial? Sure. But sometimes this moment is the most tense, memorable and exciting in a bout.
It came to mind because I'm compiling some fights, and there's Ali's provoking of Foreman during their clash and Foreman's great staredown with Frazier (currently left).
One of the most notable had to be the complete absense of this event in the Lewis-Tyson fight, an act which I thought brought a level of disgrace to the sport. Speaking of Lewis, I loved the look on the ref's face during the second Rahman fight, right after he says "God bless America" - never mind Rahman, that referee was terrified!
But for me the one that sticks in the mind the most is a very recent one, I'm sure you'll know it...
"Any questions...?"
neils7147933 05-24-2005, 12:30 PM I imagine you mean Tarver-Jones II...
Martin (Top Knowledge) 05-24-2005, 12:31 PM I imagine you mean Tarver-Jones II...
That was funny ****!... LOL!...
!! Anorak 05-24-2005, 12:34 PM That was funny ****!... LOL!...That was kind of scary, too, because the look of not just intent, but absolute certainity on Tarver's face was incredible. I know this is the sort of bull**** people always say after the event, but when I saw both the faces of those fighters I felt Roy was in for an upset.
"You got any excuses tonight, Roy?"
"Let's not ask that sort of question."
"You got any excuses tonight, Roooooy?"
TyrantT316 05-24-2005, 12:38 PM probably not the referee instructions...
but the look on Tyson's face staring down Peter...

I think it scared Roy Jones too!

lennox lewis v frank bruno, bruno was really up for that fight and it showed from the very start and carried on thoughout the fight
Exciterx24 05-24-2005, 12:45 PM Staredowns or the referee's instructions? Staredowns, I would mention a lot like pretty much everything by Trinidad, Hearns, or Vargas. Referee's instructions, I gotta go with the guy in the Trinidad-Carr fight. Both fighters were trying to psyche each other down and the referee kept telling both of them to look at him while he gave instructions. Only time I have seen a referee who does not allow a staredown.
Martin (Top Knowledge) 05-24-2005, 12:49 PM Who was it that Nigel Benn was pushing his forehead against in the stare-down? He used to do **** like that...
And remember when Michael Gomez pushed his forehead against Alex Arthur's when arthur tried to get in the ring?... LOL!...
!! Anorak 05-24-2005, 12:52 PM Remember Joe's face in the Holmes-Frazier fight? It was Marvin's bout but Joe looked like he wanted some of the action himself.
!! Anorak 05-24-2005, 01:13 PM Actually, preparing these old clips, unless the fights are very heavily edited (I'm talking mid-70s heavyweight bouts here) there's no great build-up. Any comments about the boxer's record, who the ref is, who the judge is, that's all left to titles and the commentators. It's a straight ring entrance, ref's instructions and that's it, straight on.
I can appreciate them having to introduce the current heavyweights, but is skipping all the pre-hype better, do you think?
Martin (Top Knowledge) 05-24-2005, 01:21 PM I do like the introduction of the fighters... But I do get pissed off with all the waiting around we get these days.
I strongly disslike it when they have the national anthems (people singing in the ring).
That does my head in... I'm thinking - "JUST GET ON WITH THE FIGHT!!!"... LOL!...

me too. i despise national anthems.
!! Anorak 05-24-2005, 01:30 PM It's just embarrassing when the fight is like Saturday night's... I stayed up till 4am Limey time, put up with about ten minutes of ramble... then it's over in less than a minute.

Brewtster vs Golota?... What channel was that on?
SacTown1 05-24-2005, 01:34 PM Best ref's instructions:
JOHN RUIZ vs. FRES OQUENDO
the fake little scrap that the trainers got into was far more entertaining than the actual fight

Sorry mate, I thought you knew about the streaming channel. I'll pm you about it if you want.
fight_fan 05-24-2005, 01:40 PM in addition to the ones already submitted,i'd say the Holyfield v Tyson II ref instr/staredown. this is an interesting study in human behavior and psychology only when compared to the ref instr/staredown of Holyfield v Tyson I.
Tyson had that "I'm gonna kill you!" look in the staredown of the first fight, but in the second fight, he had the "please don't hurt me Mr. Holyfield!" look...

GREAT CALL, I remember the same thing, Tyson didn't have the Eye of the Tiger in the rematch with Evander....he also looked dazed & confused during his ringwalk vs. Lennox
fight_fan 05-24-2005, 01:55 PM wassup SacTown1? i need to go back and look at the Tyson v Lewis fight (hope i still have it!). all i remember about that is the line of "armed" security guards that separated the fighters.
i just read your signature...i'm trippin over "Tszyu over Hatton by brutal mid-round KO, then Manchester over Tszyu via a brutal beer-motivated mugging"

Yeah Tyson looked like a glazed doughnut during his ringwalk vs. Lewis....Evander had the same look last year during his ringwalk vs. Larry Donald, he looked lost and out-of-focus

I can appreciate them having to introduce the current heavyweights, but is skipping all the pre-hype better, do you think?I'm talking rubbish here, the introductions are omitted on archive fights, aren't they? Just got to Frazier-Ali II and it's on there. It's still not as overblown though.

yea i dont like the national anthems either.i think the people know their anthems already and dont need 20 minutes of singing in the ring.another thing i dont like is fighters taking 20 minutes to get to the ring dancing to their ring entrances.i say just get to the damn ring.i have always been a fan of prince naseem but hated that it took him 40 minutes to get to the ring dancing like an idiot.they should get both men to the ring announce their names and say fight.
TyrantT316 05-24-2005, 06:11 PM the anthems are a little much for every event...I think it is something that should probably be done at the very beginning rather than right before the main event...and the introduction of the ref, rules, and judges separately is a little much...they could just show a ticker or something near the bottom during an entrance stating the rules and the names, etc

I wonder if anyone really gives a **** who does the judging anyway? That said, you do tend to recognise names who are dodgy, I guess, but not much else...

i think there should be an age limit on the judges, some of those guys are way to old :D
